Depressed Who Dat.....Need Help
so there I am still basking in the glow of the MOnday Night win today and watching replays of the game for the 20th time today when i flip on Inside the NFL to see how they covered the Saints win. Low and behold, I see the Cincinatti Bengals in the locker room after their win chanting "Who Dem Think Dey Gonna Beat Dem Bengals!" and my jaw was floored. How dare someone steal the Who Dat chant and it even sounds gay the way they changed the words. The cadence doesnt even fit well.
So after discussing it with a friend, we google the hell out of it and only to find unsupported second-hand evidence that the Bengals started the chant in the 81 season mocking to regional advertising campaigns for Hudey Beer or some car dealership motto. Either way people hear it from the 82 superbowl as well. The sad part is that the earliest i could trace the Who Dat coming from the Saints was in 1984. SI credits the chant to Cincinatti and the veracular pronunciation of Dat and Dem is credited to Kentucky cave miners, which would point to them as well. I was so sure they had stolen our chant and i feel so down to think we took it from them. If anyone can offer some prrof or if any of you lifers can remember when it started please post the info and help me solve this moral dilemma Thanks! |
