Salt in the Wound

Dr. Z of SI wrote the following in his recent rankings:

New Orleans Saints (3-1)
Will linebacker Scott Fujita be suspended for five games? Yeah, right. I thought that what he did to Panthers star Steve Smith was worse than the Albert Haynesworth stomping thing. What did he do? Took a run at Smith and then took a full running dive at both of his knees, with the ball already gone elsewhere. So why no severe penalty, at least not at this point? Because the NFL, as you know, is into image, and while the image of the Haynesworth incident was an "Oh, my God, how horrible," Fujita's foul, while potentially more dangerous than what Haynesworth did, was on the other side of the field, away from the play, and not noticed by many.

Dr Z has increasingly become more of an idiot as time has gone on. A few years back when I first started reading him I had a lot of respect for him, but he now delves so much into wine tasting and incorporating his wife into everything football related it's annoying. The straw that broke the camel's back was his "NFL" preview in July or August. He did a write up on every team in the NFL, except the Saints. So I figured since we were such a huge story, maybe he was gonna give us our own specific write up like Peter King. Wrong. Never did. I e-mailed him several times about it over the course of the next couple of weeks, no response from him or in the mailbag, and no apology to Saints fans. Screw Dr. Z.

seriously, I do not understand how some of these guys are so popular. I suppose it is one of my beliefs that the masses just take whatever is fed to them. Like, Kornheiser, he seems to be a nice enough guy, not a wacked a-hole like his partner. But he knows little about the game and players. I would guess a great number of fans on this site could give more creative and insightful views on players and teams than him. Dr. Z rambling about wine, Peter King (who I do like most of his takes) about coffee or his kids sports... I could care less... I want football info- fresh news, thoughtful commentary. It seems continually more fluff and presentation in the media and less substance. Okay, enough rant... and have you noticed that 5-10 minutes of a NFL Live show is either flashy graphics flying around or a preview of what they are going to tell you AGAIN later?

Exactly why I either sleep til about 1130 on Sundays, or take the fame to IHOP until about that same time. I have gotten to that point that I almost can't stand pre-game shows anymore. Just show me the game.

RedNekSaint 10-06-2006 10:36 AM

I don't watch the pre-games anymore either. Just cut the tube on about 11:55.

Brann 10-06-2006 11:09 AM

The only pre-game show worth watching is the one with Jaws. Everything else is mindless fluff.

TallySaint 10-06-2006 11:28 AM

So you want to rant about his wife, wine and kids sports. Kinda the pot calling the kettle black.

You got part of the play wrong the ball wasn't even in motion, Jake still had the ball. Looked like Scott wasn't even watching the QB just saw him and took out the knee. When the shot widens out you see Jake is throwing the ball out to his right. I don't think the play deserves a sever penalty, but I did think he was worth taking a look at. If teams start going after players to take them out of the game, then its not football. Its Murder-Ball. There is a thing called class and sportsmanship. I don't think we should compare the 2 plays but we should make notice that it happened twice on the same day... and one was vicious and uncalled for and the other seemed more planned and to take out a player. People can say what they want but its wrong to PURPOSELY take out a player so you have a shot to win. Think if people were trying to take out our players... NOT GOOD.

Except, and here's where you keep missing the boat, FUJITA'S HIT WAS NOT INTENTIONAL. I have talked to fans from other teams, not the Panthers of course, and they ALL said it looks like Scott tripped. Look at his hands when he hits the ground. They are bracing himself to fall, not wrapping up to tackle, which would be the motion if he was trying to hit him below the knees. Get real.

Thanks, Brann. Good comeback. Happy to see you yanked your head out of Colston's ass long enough to post.

Shame on you, whodi.

Have a wonderful day, guys. All in fun. :D

Looking at some of the Panthers Forums, and one of them said that Fujita was fined today $7,500!!????
Is this true? Could not find it anywhere??

ssmitty 10-06-2006 04:51 PM

i did not see the hit and therefore will not make a judgement call..
i will say there is no room in the nfl for cheap shots..
i think a player should be kicked out for life if it is intentional.....(how many believe haynesworth will be around next season or maybe even when his suspension is up?)
now, about the 2nd 1/2 of the thread.........
aaaww shucks........(kicking the dirt), i just gotta see bradshaw for a few minutes doing the pre-game to laugh..................smitty

At one time, Dr. Z was my favorite NFL talking head- mostly because he used big words and made allusions to historical sources (Greek kinda of historical, not founding fathers type stuff). But over the years I grew tired of his rants about the past (as in football players playing before Reagan was president, not Greek stuff) and long diatribes about wine I could not afford to drink.

At one time Peter King was my least favorite (not only SI, but everything- espn, cbs, hbo, etc) NFL sports writer. Then after years of reading him (yes even though I hated him- I am addicted to reading crap about the NFL) I grew to like him some. He is very genuine and sees every player as a person instead of a filled jersey.

Then you-know-what-*****-hit New Orleans and it became obvious to me. Dr. Z has been almost an a-hole about supporting NOLA in the whole thing. While King has been a Saint.

King pretty much personally guaranteed the NFL that the horrible media hurricane that they fear taking away the Saints would bring would be started by himself if they even thought of doing it. King alone (as one of SI's most prominent writers) has millions of ears bent in his direction and could cost the NFL millions of dollars in PR damage if they moved away the team. His support has been amazing! With him on our side I feel they can't afford to take the Saints away. The NFL is currently in a good position-with the NBA being perceived as a bunch of thugs (thanks Kobe), and with MLB being tarnished by the many scandals- the NFL is seen as the most "wholesome" of the major sports leagues.

Peter King (and those that followed his lead) would make the NFL seem like the greediest of them all! Every United Way commercial would be called "hypocrisy" by the fans, and the national media would make sure as many fans know as possible. This combined with a full Superdome calms almost all my fears about them leaving soon, or L.A. putting up bids to the NFL. If only some big company would step up and buy the complete naming rights to the Dome then I would never consider thinking of the subject again!

Thanks Mr. King, and bye bye Ms. Z. I go to www.si.com for different reasons today.....

thanks for the replay rms...............
from what i'm seeing, once scotts knee hit on the way down it's very hard to believe he was trying to take a cheap shot......his right hand slid into his legs, but if you noticed real close it almost looks like smith got his leg caught in the turf as it happened........
if i had to give an unbias opinion, i'd say no, it was not a cheap shot but unfortunate none the less, but also good he's alright................smitty
