Payton's take on the crowd
Q: On the crowd
A: "By in large, I thought the crowd was decent but I think it can be a lot better. The crowd made the third downs very difficult for them. There are a lot of things we need to correct as a team and from the crowd's point of view the expectation level is very high. I think our crowd will continue to help us generate momentum. " This coach holds everyone accountable, even the fans. The nightmare of Haslett is quickly starting to fade. |

RE: Payton
What does he mean by "made the third downs very difficult"? Is he talking about when everybody started calling for Deuce cos we just weren't getting it done with Reggie? Tell you what, though, I thought the crowd was very flat, too. There were still a lot of empty seats at kickoff time. Me, I like to be in my seat about an hour before but at that time there was almost no one there. I couldn't believe it. Rather than the Panthers being the let down game after the Falcons, I think this one was because that Monday night game was almost too emotional to handle and you just cannot sustain anything close to that. We had almost none of the same people sitting around us so I was very disappointed. So, hopefully, we'll all be in better spirits for the Eagles game after that great Reggie TD!

What he means is that whenever the saints defense held Tampa to a 3rd dwn conversion attempt, the home crowd made a lot of noise makin it more difficult for the offenseive team to audible and hear the snap count. on 3 occasions it helped generate a false start and 2 burned timeouts. Noon games are hard for a city like new orleansthat doesnt kick you out of the bars at 2am. Take it from a bartender who didnt get out of wlrk until 530am and yet still made it to tailgating by 10. Lot of empty seats at kickoff sure, but with the added pat-downs in the stadium entrance, its taking a lot more time to get in the dome than people are used to and we dont like change around here much...especially when we were out until 5am =P

RE: Re: Payton
I totally took that comment a different way, that's why I didn't understand it. I thought he was talking about making OUR third downs difficult (cos, you know, it sure like we were at third down an awful lot). But you're right, and I realize I read it wrong.
Gosh, I sure hope that little boy sitting beside me got home from the bar before 2 a.m. |

RE: Re: Payton
I don't find our crowd lacked that much. Sure, it wasn't the Atlanta game, but that was the freakin' Superbowl to us. It was the first game back. Still, though, I thought we were pretty loud and animate the entire game - atleast, my section was. I failed to be silent for one defensive play. We were just as loud in the 4th quarter as the 1st. Maybe, absolutely everyone should have been on their feet screaming, but these past two games have been much louder and crazier than any other Saints games I've been to. Then again, I'm only 21. I was still a little kid during the Dome Patrol years.
