IN NEED OF A FIX
Record performance by QB Brees wasted

Monday, November 20, 2006
By Mike Triplett, Times-Picayune

The good news first. The Saints are still in contention for a playoff berth with six weeks remaining in the season.

At 6-4, they are tied for first place in the NFC South Division, and they have a chance to separate themselves from the wild-card pack if they can win at Atlanta next Sunday.

But here's the catch. Whatever magic had been carrying the Saints through the first half of this season seems to have vanished.

More specifically, the Saints have been giving it away. They turned over the ball four more times in a 31-16 loss to the Cincinnati Bengals at the Superdome on Sunday.

The Saints have lost three of their past four games, with a combined 12 turnovers in those three losses.

"I look at us as an offense, we're moving the ball up and down the field, scoring a lot of points, we've been great on third down, and time of possession we've been very good," quarterback Drew Brees said after throwing for 510 yards, the sixth-highest total in NFL history. "It's just that one stat. And unfortunately, the turnover stat is the most important.

"So we just go back to the drawing board, fix that, and if you have to fall back on a few others in order to fix that, so be it. Because it's the most important one."

The NFL record for passing yards in a game is held by Norm Van Brocklin, who threw for 554 yards in a game for the Los Angeles Rams in 1951.

Brees shattered the Saints' team record of 441 passing yards in a game, set by Aaron Brooks in 2000.

He also broke his personal best of 398 yards -- which was set last week in a loss at Pittsburgh.

Brees may have had a record day for yards passing, but it's never a good sign when your QB throws for 510 and throws over 50 times in a game.
