RE: He
Wish we never had to cut him. Frustrating that NFL won't expand their active and inactive rosters to allow for more specialists in today's game. Heck we barely found room to keep our long snapper. These utility players don't cost us much cap-wise but they're important to a team.

Welcome Back, Mr. Fred! Veteran Fred McAfee Back in the Fold
Douglas P. Miller, NewOrleansSaints.com Nov 21, 2006 – 8:57 pm Friend's E-mail: Your E-mail: The New Orleans Saints have signed RB Fred McAfee, it was announced by Executive Vice President/General Manager Mickey Loomis. McAfee, a 15-year veteran, is in his fourth stint with the Saints and is considered one of the top special teams performers of his era. Voted to the Pro Bowl in 2002 for his special teams contributions, McAfee also played in New Orleans from 1991-93, from 2000-03 and from 2004-05. He went to training camp with the team in 2006. In 2005, he led the Saints with a career-high 30 (22 solo) special teams stops. He also retuned 22 kickoffs for 485 yards and led the team with a 22.0 kickoff return average. "We are glad to have Fred back in the fold. He is very familiar with our team," said Executive Vice President/General Manager Mickey Looms. "He brings veteran experience, leadership and he has proven that he is one of the top special teams in the league on a year-in and year-out basis." McAfee has also had stints with the Arizona Cardinals (1994), the Pittsburgh Steelers (1994-98) and the Tampa Bay Buccaneers (1999). For his career, he has played in 190 games with six starts. He has notched 204 special teams tackles, two forced fumbles and six fumble recoveries. During his career in New Orleans, he has appeared in 118 games. As a rookie with New Orleans in 1991 after being selected in the sixth round (154th overall) of the NFL Draft out of Mississippi College, McAfee led the Saints with a career-high 494 rushing yards on 109 carries and scored two touchdowns. In his career, he has 1,207 rushing yards on 299 attempts, with seven touchdowns. McAfee also has 35 catches for 211 yards and has returned 118 kickoffs for 2,392 yards. The Saints also announced this evening that TE Nate Lawrie was waived. http://www.neworleanssaints.com/news...articleid=3098 |
