Mitch Berger

this is a discussion within the Saints Community Forum; What is his status right now? Having him in the line up would definately help us with field position. Also, I'm wondering, are we going to keep two place kickers for next season as well?...

RE: Mitch Berger

Weatherford's done a pretty good job all year.

It's a possibility... Carney isn't getting any younger and he can't get those kickoffs in the endzone anymore.

Berger's been on Ir all year. He had some serious problems with, if I remember correctly, in training camp with his groin. I look for him to be back next year if it isn't as serious as it sounded back then. I think I remember them saying it could be career ending. But i'm not really sure. At my age the mind is the second thing to go.

Weatherford has done a great job for a rookie on a team with a lot of media scrutiny. He's also had a few tackles on returns, IIRC. I think Berger may be done as a Saint. Hoping we re-sign Cundiff for kickoffs...his onside kick against the Cowboys was a thing of beauty.

If I`m not mistaken... Didn`t Carney do the kickoffs in the Carolina game?.... I don`t recall seeing Cundiff at all. Certainly Payton understands that kickoffs landing on the 20 yardline aint gonna get it.
Alot has been talked about as far as Saints' Offense and Defense leading into the playoffs, but Special teams can play a HUGE role in close games. Especially in the playoffs where more evenly matched teams can win or lose with feild position. I think our special teams must bring their A+ game. Will Reggie and Lewis continue to share the return duties? Is Fred McAffee back on special teams? has anyone seen Cundiff .. is he still on the roster?

Cundiff was cut before the Carolina game to give Branch or Trevor Johnson a shot.

I know in backyard football, if ya couldn`t kick for sh*T, then you could throw it for the kickoff..... how far can Carney throw? it couldn`t be more pitiful than his kickoffs.

We'll have to see if Berger returns to health this off-season. Keep in mind he was a Pro-Bowl calibre punter and also handled kickoff duties w/ the Vikings and the Saints. Weatherford has filled in nicely, but if Berger can prove he's back to 100% he's got the edge IMHO.
