Report: Tapes could confirm Bush received gifts

SAN DIEGO -- The existence of taped conversations between Reggie Bush or members of his family and an investor in a failed sports marketing agency could confirm the New Orleans Saints running back received cash and gifts while playing for Southern California, Yahoo.com reported Wednesday.

A federal investigation into extortion claims by Bush and his family revealed the existence of the taped conversations, according to the Yahoo.com report.

The U.S. Attorney's office in San Diego has issued grand jury subpoenas to multiple witnesses in the probe, Yahoo.com reported. According to a copy of a subpoena obtained by Yahoo, at least one of the witnesses was asked to hand over "any recordings in your possession of conversations between Lloyd Lake and Reggie Bush, Denise Griffin or LaMar Griffin."

Lake, who founded a sports marketing agency in hopes of landing Bush as its first client, is the subject of a grand jury probe into the extortion claims. Denise Griffin is Bush's mother, and LaMar Griffin is Bush's stepfather.

Yahoo.com, citing unidentified sources, reported LaMar Griffin spoke with federal investigators in the spring of 2006 and acknowledged the existence of the tapes.

"We're aware of an investigation into possible criminal conduct by Lake and others associated with him," Bush attorney David Cornwell told ESPN's Joe Schad on Wednesday. "We have and will continue to cooperate with the Department of Justice."

When asked in the past about the allegations of receiving inappropriate extra benefits, Bush has insisted that he and his family did nothing wrong.

I know we've talked about this time and time again, but someone just re-affirm that nothing can be done to him that would affect the Saints now that is he is in the NFL correct???

It's my understanding that the negative impacts are:

1) reggie loses his heisman
2) his records are taken from usc history books
3) possibly USC gets put on probabtion if they can prove that they were complicit or somehow knew about this
4) usc loses bcs title

He's a pro now. (You could argue he was a pro then if theis stuff is true.)

The negatives won't affect his Saints career beyond the bad press he'll get.

The disgrace of all that stuff would be bad. I won't say agree with what he and his family (MAY) have done, but I look at it like this... htese Universities make millions upon millions on these kids and really don't give anything back to the kids. "If" Reggie did do what he is being accused of, I will still feel the same about him no matter what.

Don't say these kids don't get anything back. They get a free college education.

How many of them graduate? It's not like even an eighth of them are majoring in some world changing degree program. Sports Admin, Sports Training (P.E.), and Business. I know non-athletes that finish those degrees in three years.

Hey, I am a firm believer that if they leave school early to go pro, they should pay the school back for everything.

Well, first off, if he did accept gifts, he's in the 99.9 percentile of star college athletes who do just that. You think Vince Young, or Troy Smith, or any other college star doesn't get the same stuff from boosters? The only difference in this case (again, if true), is that Reggie got caught.

I graduated from LSU, and one of our 'backup' running backs lived two apartments down from my brother. The guy drove a Cadillac and an Expedition.

The good news if the reports are true is the timing of this, better for it to all come out now instead at the beginning of the next season..
USC will suffer dearly if this is true, I wonder if Pete Carroll will take the offers to coach in the NFL again? If USC loses scholarships for a few years they can forget about winning for now, IMO Pete will jump ship and head back to the NFL.
Bush has nothing to worry about but will lose out also with his records and the heisman which isn't a good thing to lose, he earned it and it can be taken away quickly, hopefully the reports are lies, all lies.....

Rest In Peace JoeSam, thanks for everything my friend.
