What we need to succeed or procceed!

Im just wanting to see everyones outlook on what we need to perfect for next years run at the BIG GAME!
First we need a CB: Alot of teams had there way with Thomas this year, maybe we an move him to special teams, because he is fast and can still tackle.
Second LB: We need another quick, hard hitting guy to help out Shanle and Fujita
Third Saftey: Someone to help out Harper (hopefully he returns 100%
And last but not least another big guy in the middle to help out Hollis Thomas
REMEMBER DEFENSES WHEN GAMES esp.BIG ONES that Count :08:

RE: What we need to succeed or procceed!

we have all agreed of the defense needs at CB and LB. Safety is one area to look at IMO, Harper injury put a bigger strain on Josh last year. I think he was asked to cover to much ground deep in the secondary. Smith was my biggest disappointment at S last year. A miulti functional secondary player may be what we need. I am expecting a true CB and/or a CB/S type to be drafted in the first 4 rounds.
DT is an area need as is DE.
On the offensive side I want a T/G combo to be drafted. our OL handled the mid level defenses fine but could not handle the elite DL. maybe FA will address this area of need. But I would not be surprised to a G or T drafted on the first day.
Add an every down TE to the list also.
Okay I want better players all around. The core is there but we need alot also to stay in the upper level and compete with the top defenses in the NFL for years to come.

DT is an area of need, but I would like to see us keep Hollis Thomas. That being said, adding another "big body" DT would be nice.

Our OLine could use some depth, but that unit was very cohesive and effective.

I would like to see us get a TE, but at the same time, somebody (I don't remember who now) made a good point that Campbell came on nicely towards the end of the season. And, he's a pretty good runblocker. I'd rather have a guy who can open holes for our best playmakers (Deuce and Reggie) than a guy who can't. But I also know that having a receiving threat can be helpful to an offense, it's just tough finding that kind of combination.

Anyways, as for the rest, veteran CB in free agency and Willis in the first round.

RE: What we need to succeed or procceed!

I just want to remind you guys, that the Colts defense was ranked 27th, at the end of the season, and they just won the Superbowl. Our defense was at 17. Colts offense was No. 3, ours was No. 1. Bears defense was No. 2, behind Baltimore, and the Colts put up 450 yards on them. So, with that in mind, I believe that if we get offense in F.A., and concentrate on defense in the draft, then we should be sitting pretty good, going into the 07 season.

Excellent post... But I'm not sure I want to see us with two rookies (if Harper retuns he is still only a 2nd year rookie having missed most of the year in 06) in the secondary next year. I think you gotta look at F.A. for that and also draft one to platoon. If the D line stays status quo then I think we're good (when we get our injured players back). LB can be addressed thru the draft as they would be platoon'd with some excellent vets. Biggest needs I think are TE and WR ( 2 or 3 depending on where you see Joe fitting in). TE and WR can take a lot of pressure off the OL we've already seen Drew loves to dump it down.
Hate the empty void that is the off season... come on September!!!

RE: Re: RE: What we need to succeed or procceed!

Granted the colts seasonal stats we bad. They did lead the NFl in the playoffs. thats when it counted. Remember the Colts in previous years were one of the better ones in the NFL. Just ask any fantasy football players that drafted them this year thinking they would repeat there performance from previous years. So the core was there. They just fell apart or teams figure them out. who knows. but they got there act together in the end.
We are sitting good as core but key additions are needed as we all have said. While a CB is needed I think MLB is key. That is a position were a Veteran FA will make the biggest impact. I do not want a FA of Donnie Edwards age,
here is my pick
Kawika Mitchell, MLB 6-1/253 South Florida
NFL Draft 2003 / Round 2/ Pick 47
http://cbs.sportsline.com/nfl/players/playerpage/396038
http://www.kcchiefs.com/player/kawika_mitchell/
That would be a bigger bang for the bucks than a TE. Grahm is good but I am thinking the money for the two will be about the same. As for WR I do not see a FA that can step into Horns shoes. They will be cheaper but not as good. But the cap hit is the cap hit. It is what is: high for a 35 year old WR just like Donnie Edwards would be. So we may see a WR early in the Draft. Rice in the first? Higgins in the second? Paul Williams in the Third?
