Most Eagles fans want to see wide receiver Donté Stallworth and quarterback Jeff Garcia return next season, but the team seems to think the price may not be right for either to remain in Philadelphia. Eagles GM Tom Heckert is confident that if the Eagles don't get Stallworth back, the team will still have a good enough receiving corps next season. With A.J. Feeley on board as a potential backup to Donovan McNabb at quarterback, the Eagles also feel as if they can survive the loss of Garcia if he decides to sign elsewhere and become a starter again.

Eagles | Heckert comments on Stallworth
Wed, 21 Feb 2007 07:07:57 -0800

John Nalbone, of the Trenton Times, reports Philadelphia Eagles general manager Tom Heckert discussed the status of WR Donte' Stallworth, who is eligible to become an unrestricted free agent next month. "I don't know if they have actually come out and said it, but they aren't quite sure what their market value is right now," Heckert said before firing a shot over the bow of Stallworth and his agent, Drew Rosenhaus. "Donte' has had some injury concerns and realistically the guy caught (only) 38 balls last season, so it's tough to gauge." Heckett did express interest in re-signing Stallworth if the price is right. "I don't think there is any question that we'd love to have Donte' back," Heckert maintained. "But we had the same concerns then as we have now with the (hamstring) injury stuff. So, there's a price we are willing to pay, but then again the facts are facts."

Donte has some injury concerns? Welcome to Earth Mr. Heckert.

The Eagles think Dante Stallworth is a good player and would love to have him back next season, but only at a price that they deem market-worthy. If some team is willing to give Stallworth a $10 million signing bonus as part of a six-year, $31 million contract similar to the one that Antwaan Randle El received from the Washington Redskins last off-season, it's safe to assume that the receiver won't have wings on the sides of his helmet next season. The belief inside the NovaCare Complex in South Philadelphia is that Stallworth will get that kind of money. The other belief inside the Eagles' offices is that the team can be every bit as successful as the Saints were last season after losing Stallworth.

"$10 million signing bonus as part of a six-year, $31 million contract" for someone with chronic hamstring problems. Glad to be rid of this problem and hope he lands with a team who has a good receiver corps...they will need them.

The last comment is really telling!
