Here is what I take to be the biggest problem for drafting for need: if you really need that guy and the rest of the unit is crud, then he is likely not going to help the team very much.
Here is the idea: imagine you need three linebackers, so you draft a linebacker (draft for need) early on. Say that guy does turn out to be great - you still have two more who aren't so good. Now, your opponents can game plan against you one good linebacker, and you're left with the two weaker ones being asked to make all the plays. Thus, if the need is just that big, then drafting for need becomes an even worse idea. Just a thought. |

BAP vs need is never black and white. Obviously we will not take an RB this year, but who knew Bush would be available last year?
This year is offense heavy, so the best player available could very well be a CB or LB, which would fine with me. |
