Saints Looking to sign CB Jason David
Saints eye young Colt:
Friday, April 20, is the deadline for teams to sign restricted free agents to offer sheets, and there could be some action heating up in that regard the next few days. New Orleans, which has tried in futility to upgrade at cornerback over the past two years, is hosting Jason David of the Indianapolis Colts this weekend, and could sign him to an offer sheet that the defending Super Bowl champions would find hard to match. Losing David, who has started all 48 games in which he has appeared during his three seasons in Indianapolis, would be a tough pill for the Colts to swallow after losing starting cornerback Nick Harper to Tennessee as an unrestricted free agent last month. David, just 24, is a very solid defender in the Tampa 2 scheme, plays bigger than his size, and has eight interceptions in three years. The Colts tendered him at the lowest qualifying offer, a one-year deal worth $850,000, and that may have been a mistake. Were the Saints to sign David to an offer sheet, one the Colts couldn't match, Indianapolis would receive only a fourth-round draft pick as compensation. More critical, the Colts would be forced to play with two new starting cornerbacks in 2007. Word is the Saints are serious about trying to pry David from the Colts. http://insider.espn.go.com/nfl/insid...len&id=2836372 |
I hope they can get him. At 24, and already with more than two years of starting experience, he can only get better.
|
This would be a great signing for a 4th rounder.
|
How much
Is here worth, The 4th round pick for hime is good IMO:-D
|
Would be a good signing by the saints if we got him....
|
yea
I think we need him and a few more......
|
This would be an awesome pick up. We could then go with the the 27th pick, and still get a quality DB in the 2nd round
a fourth rounder would be dirt cheap for a starter other than Peyton being on SNL, it has not been a good off season for Indy, or the Bears for that matter. |
Saints | Team could offer contract to J. David
Sun, 15 Apr 2007 21:42:35 -0700 John Murphy, of Yahoo! Sports, reports the New Orleans Saints are expected to make an offer to restricted free-agent CB Jason David (Colts). Sources say the offer will possibly contain a "poison pill" that would be hard for the Indianapolis Colts to match. The Colts would receive a fourth-round draft pick if David is signed to an offer sheet and the team refuses to match the offer. http://www.kffl.com/hotw/nfl#385746 |
I do not know about this one. I just can not get excited about this option. It is not so much David himself as giving up a 4th for him. I just think that rounds 3 to 5 has so many interesting players in them. I hate to lose the pick. Plus it will weaken our ability to move around in the Draft. Getting a solid proven CB and a good developemental CB is there this year. Still undecided.
|
You got to remember he's a zone type CB, a Tampa 2 is what the Colts use. I'm not saying he would not be a good pickup, but what if he just not a man on man type defender.
|
Well we have a couple of fourth round picks so it wouldn't cost us much in trying to sign the guy. He's young and has starting experience. At worse, he would make a good nickel corner for us. I'd support the move.
|
A fourth rounder for a proven starter at our area of biggest need, when we have 3 fourth round picks to play with? Where do we sign up?
And if he couldn't play man I don't think the front office would force a round peg in a square hole. These guys seem to know what they're doing. |
replacement
unless they are just looking at replaceing Fred then this is good. I hope they still go after a big name CB in the draft.
|
For those of you who are second guessing the decision, he is roughly the same age as most of the guys coming out in the draft, and he has 3 years of NFL experience. You cant find that kind of player in the 4th round. And if the Saints were to sign him, it doesnt mean that they still wouldnt draft one...or two.

Plus, who knows how the top 8 DB's will pan out? They could all be gone by the middle of the second round, or someone like Hughes might still be around, and he might end up being the second or third best. This move minimizes our risk. Any idea how much he'll cost? $1.4 million or so is my guess. He'll will sign anything over the low ball the Colts offered, so it's just a matter of what they'll spend to keep him. |
He's not Champ Bailey or anything, but if they can sign him for a reasonable price, I think it's a good move. He's 24 and proven, but just as importantly, HE HAS A RING! The offseason themes seem to be character guys and Superbowl experience. That certainly workout for the Pats.

Saints | Team negotiating with J. David
Mon, 16 Apr 2007 09:36:44 -0700 Updating a previous item, John Murphy, of Yahoo! Sports, reports the New Orleans Saints have begun to negotiate and lay the parameters on a possible contract with free-agent CB Jason David (Colts). The team, however, has not made a formal contract offer at this point. http://www.kffl.com/hotw/nfl |

Yep - you got in one......................... especially we do have a BIG problem at CB |
I'm a little weary about those Tampa 2 corners just like I am about Tampa 2 linebackers. A lot of times they just don't fit in other schemes.
|
I think the Saints have three 4th round picks....so using one on a possible starting CB that would at the least bolster the depth at the position seems good to me. I haven't heard much about David, but he sounds like he could contribute.

Cougfan.com Managing Editor Posted Apr 16, 2007 IT’S BEEN AN EVENTFUL month for former Cougar cornerback Jason David. On Friday, the restricted free agent signed an offer sheet with the New Orleans Saints that the Colts can meet or beat if they want to retain the three-year starter. Two weeks ago, David received one of the largest bonuses in the NFL’s performance-based pay system that aims to more fairly match compensation with playing time. Jason David started every game for the Super Bowl champions and earned a base salary of about $350,000. Through the performance-based system, he just got another $181,000. In 2006 he had 53 tackles, including 38 solos, plus two interceptions and a fumble recovery. The performance-pay system is built around an index that compares the relative playing time and salary of each team’s players. In 2005, the NFL’s single-largest performance bonus -- $228,000 -- went to David’s old batterymate at Washington State: Erik Coleman of the Jets. If David, who has started 43 games in his three NFL seasons, ends up with the Saints, the Colts would receive a draft pick as compensation. Under restricted free agency, the round of the draft pick must be the same one that the player in question came into the league with. In David’s case, that be the fourth round -– effectively giving the Saints a true steal of a deal. (Got this from D24 off the Rev) Saints, CB David in contract negotiations The Saints began contract negotiations with restricted free agent cornerback Jason David over the weekend. If David signs an offer sheet, the deal could contain a "poison pill" that would make the contract frontloaded. The Saints have three fourth-round picks and would forfeit one if Indianapolis fails to match the proposal. David is expected to command a similar deal to the one Rod Hood got. Apr. 16 - 4:13 pm et Source: Yahoo Sports _____________________________________________________________ I hope we get him. Hopefully the contract included some kind of poison pill like what the Pats did with Wes Walker... ensuring that David will be a Saint. A 4th round compensation is not bad at all. |
I really hope the saints get this guy... this guy would help us out big time!!!! this guy is a four year starter and he will only be 25 this coming season... hes still young and will only get better
|
He's better than no corner, whodi! Remember, Fred Thomas had won the "Elvis Patterson Toast" Award.
|
We need to sign this guy and look to replace Horn in the first round.
|
I think this would be a great pickup. This offseason the Saints have leveraged themselves for the draft through the free agent signings and trades they have made to at least partially address need positions so that at worst, those positions are manned with players who are at least servicable.
The resigning of Shanle and the signing of Simmons bolstered our LB corps, the trade for Mare eliminated the need for a big legged K, the resigning of Copper and signing of Patten, and now the potential signing of David have eliminated any position as a real dire need and will allow the Saints to leverage more of a BPA strategy for the draft and even further strengthen these positions as needed. |
