The New Orleans Saints signed free-agent linebacker Trev Faulk, a Lafayette native and three-year starter for LSU from 1999-2001, on Tuesday.

Faulk, a 6-foot-3, 254-pounder, played three seasons at LSU before declaring for the NFL draft following his junior year. After spending time on the practice squad of the Arizona Cardinals in 2002 and ’03, he was signed to the St. Louis Rams’ roster late in 2003.

A cousin of New England Patriots running back Kevin Faulk, who also starred at LSU, Trev Faulk was with the Rams from 2003-05 until being released last July when he failed a physical because of a back injury. He did not play football last season.

Faulk, who’ll try to earn a roster spot with the Saints and add some depth at linebacker, was a valuable special-teams player with the Rams. In 2004, when he started two games, he recorded a team-high 24 tackles on special teams.

He started five games with the Rams in 2005 and had 20 tackles while making 16 tackles on special teams. In New Orleans, he’ll be reunited with Saints linebacker coach Joe Vitt, who coached Faulk in St. Louis.

“This is one of those situations that feels too good to be true,” Faulk said in a news release. “I’m an hour and 45 minutes away from home and I have a chance to compete for a spot.”

Well I think this another good special team addition. plus some good depth. but another back injury. I guess Anthony Waters is not out of the question,

I hope Trev can pull this off. I liked him at LSU. Might be a good fit if he can get well.
