Good analysis, Ajun. That puts it in perspective.
It seems apparent to me that the Front Office was not enamoured with much of the "big name" talent on the board. In Meacham they saw a potential impact rookie and must not have seen anyone comparable on the other side of the ball. Young and Alleman both seem to get their highest marks in character and raw talent, and you could make an argument that we are in a position to let these guys develope for a year or two. With the Detroit trade, we get a few more picks in the bargin-bin section of the draft. I'm all for this if it means that we get more looks at talent without having to spend big money. Now we can go after some of those project guys. I give the overall effort a B. |

I'm going to give it a C+/B-. My reasoning behind such a grade is that we might have gotten some nice players, but I am just disgusted that we continue to ignore our biggest problems year in and year out. Sure, taking the BPA is nice sometimes, but it would also be nice if we addressed some of our glaring holes. We needed a DT because we didn't address that position AT ALL in free agency. We could have used a pure MLB in order to allow Simmons to play outside, where I believe he is more comfortable. I didn't like the trades either, I don't really see what value we created by doing them. Overall I think we bettered our depth at positions that were already pretty secure, while at the same time completely ignoring positions of need. I would like to hear some justification for not getting a DT (especially with Alan Branch still left on the board at 27).
Also, the Pittman pick sucks balls. Absolutely terrible. There were still some good defensive players left on the board and we address our strongest position on the team. Terrible. |
