• Room to work: With the free-agent class down to the bottom of the barrel, and plenty of rookies still left to sign, most teams remain in relatively good salary-cap shape. The average cap room per team leaguewide, as of Thursday, was $9.82 million. Fourteen franchises, nearly half the teams in the league, still have more than $10 million in salary-cap space. Seven teams have more than $15 million in available spending room and three teams have $20 million or more. Probably explains why there working on a Will Smith Deal. Shift some 2008 cap hit and apply it to this year if possible. Frees up more free-agent cap money for 2008.

It's interesting that of the fourteen teams with $10 million or more in salary cap space, six of them are playoff teams, more interesting four of the six are from the NFC, Kansas City, $16.189; Dallas, $13.875; Philadelphia, $11.517; New Orleans, $11.271; Seattle, $10.507; and the New York Jets, $10.039.You would think teams like Cleveland [$21.968] would have that much cap space with all the help they need just to compete let alone make the playoffs and Buffalo ($21.053) who didn't make the playoffs last year, and let most of their best players off that team go. And also looking at those cap numbers I understand why Brett Favre was so upset with Green Bay ($15.959), that much under the cap and not going after the top FAs out there. I think the Saints have one more big move in them before the season starts, possibly picking up a DT, DE, or a LB.

The Bears have about 13 mil in dead cap money, due to departed players. I don't know what the Lions have to show for all that spending. The Pack should go after LJ. Minn is cheap, but they need a new Dome. Philly jettisons high priced vets when they reach 30, like I do on Madden. The Pats stunned people with their spending spree. I guess having to deal with not being at the big dance one year really upset Kraft.
