IN THE SPOTLIGHT

WIDE RECEIVERS: Just as things developed in camp a year ago, there's clearly a No. 1 pass catcher on the roster, only this time it's not the departed Joe Horn, now with the Atlanta Falcons, but the dependable Marques Colston. Unlike last season, though, even though the numbers are high, the second through fifth receiver spots seem to be shaping up quickly. After Colston, Devery Henderson appears to be the solid No. 2 guy, followed by newcomer David Patten or Terrance Copper. Rookie Robert Meachem, given his first-round draft status, should be a roster lock, as should be Lance Moore, who'll probably handle the bulk of the return duties. The Saints probably won't keep more than six wideouts on the roster.

GET TO KNOW

Name: Anton Palepoi

Position: DE

Experience: 5

Age: 29

College: UNLV

Hometown: American Samoa

Did you know? Palepoi has missed the past three practices after suffering an ankle sprain in Sunday's late workout. He was wearing a walking boot, and Coach Sean Payton said Tuesday the training staff has preferred to keep Palepoi, 6 feet 4, 297 pounds, off his feet during the rehab process. He was on the field rehabbing, though, Tuesday afternoon . . . . Palepoi's performance in the May minicamp earned him an invitation to Millsaps for training camp. Originally a second-round draft choice of Seattle in 2002, Palepoi has played in 35 regular-season games during four seasons with Seattle, Denver and Arizona. He has one career start. . . . Though born in American Samoa, Palepoi played high school football in Salt Lake City.

WHO'S HOT

Hollis Thomas

And it's not for the reason you think. The defensive tackle, who struggles with his weight and the Mississippi heat, was on fire in the morning workout. On the first play of a red zone drill, Thomas stunted around center Jeff Faine to disrupt Drew Brees' pass play. Several plays later, Thomas stopped a running play. His hot streak carried over to one-on-one pass rushing drills when he got the better of Jonathan Goodwin on successive plays.

WHO'S NOT

Jason Craft

Some feel Craft is in the midst of one of the best training camps by a defensive player, but he was victimized on back-to-back plays in the red-zone scoring drill, each time by backup quarterback Jamie Martin. First, Martin found Copper in the corner of the end zone, and next it was a nice pass to Moore in the back of the end zone. Craft had the single coverage each time.

PLAY OF THE DAY

Ordinarily, the inside rushing drill is aimed at stopping running plays, usually inside the tackles. The offense lines up in a tight formation, usually with an extra body, customarily a kicker, lined up as the only wide receiver. On the second-to-last play of the drill Tuesday, Olindo Mare assumed the role as the uncovered wideout. Quarterback Tyler Palko faked the run and tossed a pass to Mare, who ran into the secondary untouched. It drew a high-five from running backs coach George Henshaw.

QUOTE OF THE DAY

"Excuse me, officer, can I come in here? The sign says 'no weapons,' and I've got a couple of guns here." -- Patten, to a Jackson sheriff's deputy at the practice field entrance, jokingly referring to his bulging biceps.
