I hope it's nothing. This would be a major blow to us if our starting left tackle were to go down for a significant period of time.

Re: Jammal Brown hurt!!!!!!!!!!!!

He stayed down for 20 minutes and then was carted off the field. God please don't let it be a tear. Please let it be a sprain or something minor. Who can we least afford to lose besides Brees? Brown.
It was supposed to be a walkthrough today, but Payton was so displeased with the way the team played on Sunday night that they did a full contact drill instead.
Anyone else want to argue that the preseason doesn't matter. If we had shown up to play instead of just laying down Jammal Brown would never have gotten hurt today.

^ That's a stretch. Players get hurt all the time from far less. Billy Joe Hobert tore up his leg dropping back to pass one year.

Re: Jammal Brown hurt!!!!!!!!!!!!

Well, if it is bad, then streif will fill in and hopefully do a good job. He filled in a couple times last year (can't remember who for) and played well. That's why it is a team sport.

He filled in for Brown and played well.

Re: Jammal Brown hurt!!!!!!!!!!!!

I am very confident that IF he is down, Payton will have his replacement firing on all cylinders by the time the season comes around. And besides, the more reps Streif gets with the first team, the better it will help in the long run IF Brown is out for a long period of time.

Re: Jammal Brown hurt!!!!!!!!!!!!

Strief is a good BACKUP. What he is not is a PRO BOWLER. We had our best lineman protecting our PRO BOWL QB. This is REALLY BAD if it is major. I am extremely concerned to say the least.

Injuries are apart of the game. The game may have ment nothing but at least there should have been flashes of good things to come... they were flat and horrible. Sean was pissed and I don't blame him. It showed him he's got a lot more work to do with the team.

jonnyrotten 08-07-2007 12:05 PM

Re: Jammal Brown hurt!!!!!!!!!!!!

stockman, I agree with you on that, but don't forget that's what backups are for. They are all amazing athletes and from what he showed last season, if he can duplicate then he should fill in adequately enough to get us through

papz 08-07-2007 12:08 PM

Re: Jammal Brown hurt!!!!!!!!!!!!

With all the elite DE's we are going to face, no matter how adequately Strief can perform should he replace Brown, he still isn't Jamal Brown. It's nice to have good backups... but we're talking about losing a potential ProBowler. Our offense will take a hit if he misses extended time.

Has anyone ever heard of cause and effect. The Saints played crappy on Sunday = CAUSE
Because of aforementioned crappy play, Payton made the team practice full bore instead of the walkthrough that was orignally planned. Everyone knows the risk of injury is higher in a full contact practice than in a walkthrough = EFFECT

Jammal Brown is not a potential ProBowler. He is a Pro Bowler and he is probably going to be MULTIPLE PRO BOWLER. The drop to Strief may not be as far as the drop from Brees to Martin but it isn't far off. I for one am praying for a good MRI right now. Literally praying.

Stop acting like a bunch of seagulls dancin around a bread crust.

The saints are not made and broken with Jammal Brown. Our team NEEDS desperately to be more physical. See Ravens Loss, Steelers Loss, Bengals loss, Carolina 1st loss, Redskins Loss. We will be fine.

I hope Payton works these players till they can't WAIT to make someone's nose bleed on the opposing side.

I'd much rather be a sledgehammer than a pillow.

Re: Jammal Brown hurt!!!!!!!!!!!!

Yes, it is defintely a big blow if Brown is lost for any time but being it's only week 1 in preseason it gives Payton enough time to configure a modified game plan. A lot more quick slants and screen plays in case Strief is not adequate in protecting Brees. I suspect we would see more of Bush and Deuce together in the backfield to give Brees safety valve options.

You sure make a lot of sense. You want us to be more physical yet losing Brown is no big deal. Yea... gotcha. It's nothing if we lose our All Pro left tackle who protects our franchise quarterback's blindside.

I was mistaken... I forgot he got elected but didn't play.

I agree that Strief is adequate...he is a solid young player with some upside...he is not nearly as good as Jammal. This is going to hurt. I dont know how much it is going to hurt, but it is bad news nonetheless.

Re: Jammal Brown hurt!!!!!!!!!!!!

Oh God! We looked flat in the first preseason game and now our starting left tackle has an undetermined injury. What are we going to do? I guess the season's over, oh well, it was fun while it lasted.

Give me a break! This is the NFL. One man does not make a team. Strief played exceptionally well last year and was a huge reason we won a couple of games. If this team can't cope with losing a key player to injury, then they were never Championship matirial in the first place. It's almost like some of you are looking for reasons to doubt.

Re: Jammal Brown hurt!!!!!!!!!!!!

I agree. Strief held Simeon Rice in check last year in the Tampa game but he wasn't as effective Sunday night. There is plenty of time for him to pick up his game before the season starts. You don't play this game with a goal of being second string, you play to start and you make the best out of your opportunities if you want to stay in the league. This is Strief's shot I think he'll handle it.

Yea... if Drew Brees where to go down would you be saying the same thing? I don't think so. I guess some of us don't realize we aren't going to be as effective if Brees doesn't have ample time in the pocket. Deuce and Bush won't have an All Pro tackle to run block for them. Look how dismal Shaun Alexander was for Seattle last season with the departure of Hutchinson to Minnesota. I can name a ton of examples... but I'm sure you see where I'm headed with this.

To some of you, no one said the season is over. No one is saying Strief couldn't be effective. Many of you are undervaluing how much Jammal Brown means to this team. Someone said Strief held Rice in check last year, but who didn't? It's our starting left tackle. This is why the offensive line is the unsung hero of every team... they never get enough credit.

That's very encouraging... I'd rather have Brown playing than Strief, but that's just me.

You've even got Strief now saying he knows what a downgrade he is from Brown.

Even Strief is smart enough to know how much Brown means to the team.

Also his response could be from excellent coaching and discipline by Sean Payton by maintaining modesty. You let your actions on the field speak for your ability to play the position not by saying you can replace anyone on the team.

Re: Jammal Brown hurt!!!!!!!!!!!!

Papz, my point is that everyone is freaking out over a poor showing in a preseason game and an injury that no one knows anything about. It's not time to write off the Saints quite yet.

Re: Jammal Brown hurt!!!!!!!!!!!!

Well, it's a long season and hopefully the injury isn't too bad. Having the bye week come on week 4 might be of some help. Better for him to be injured now than during the second half of the season.

Re: Jammal Brown hurt!!!!!!!!!!!!

A loss of Brown would be significant. End of the world? - no. But he went to the Pro Bowl for a reason.

Re: Jammal Brown hurt!!!!!!!!!!!!

A lot of you fellow posters really crack me up sometimes. While I am sitting here talking about statistics and probabilities some of you are ranting about "team sport one player can't determine success or failure" or "support your team" or my favorite "what happens in the preason is meaningless".
The Saints are currently a preseason 18/1 odds to win the 2008 Super Bowl. There best preseason odds in franchise history if I am not mistaken. I want you all to watch these odds fall to somewhere between 25/1 and 30/1 if our starting Pro Bowl LT is down and out for the year. Is the season over? Of course not. Should we be selling our tickets or lighting ourselves on fire? That's for each of you to decide. What I am saying is that the people who put big money on these things make odds for a reason. I will leave my argument at this. Without Jammal Brown in the lineup I give us little to no shot at winning the Superbowl and I see Drew Brees being exposed to between 10 and 15 more sacks this year.

A Brown loss would be significant. End of season? Who knows? That match-up with Freeney isn't looking too good. I hope Jamaal is going to be alright. We'll see

Re: Jammal Brown hurt!!!!!!!!!!!!

Calm down. This is a team sport. If brown is out then we have to move on. This is what a championship TEAM is all about. Plugging in players when and where they are needed. I hope Bown is ok but if not so what. We still have 4 preseason games and 16 regular season games to go. Have faith in the teams depth.

Brown has a bone bruise according to WWL nothing torn. That's the good news, the bad news is they don't know how long he is out.

Chicken Little

BREAKING NEWS: BROWN'S INJURY DIAGNOSED AS BRUISE; KNEE STRUCTURALLY INTACT

NewOrleansSaints.com has learned from Saints Executive Vice President/General Manager that Saints Pro Bowl left tackle Jammal Brown has suffered a bruised right knee. The results of an MRI taken this morning show that there is not any structural damage to his knee.

The Saints are going through their afternoon practice and NewOrleansSaints.com will be in attendance following practice to speak to Saints head Coach Sean Payton.

At this time, there is not a definitive period set forth as to how much time Brown is expected to miss, however the report is certainly a best-case scenario for the Saints.

Check back later for a further update from NewOrleansSaints.com.

Re: Jammal Brown hurt!!!!!!!!!!!!

... imagine how the New England faithfull felt when their Pro-Bowl QB who had taken the team to a SB went down and a 6th round pick from Michigan took over.

.. imagine how the Green Bay faithful felt when their Pro-Bowl QB went down and a reject from Atlanta took over.

... imagine how the New Orleans faithful felt when their Pro-Bowl center left town and a Cleveland reject took over, or when their Pro-Bowl WR's hamstring rendered ineffective and a 7th Round pick from Hofsra took over ... oh, wait, you don't have to imagine that...

... see? The reality is that we don't know how Streif would respond should he suddently become the starter LT. He's looked good when he's been in there subbing for Brown. Maybe if he gets more reps with the stariting o-line....

.. so sure, it is a bad thing that jammal went down, but definitely not the end of the New Orleans Saints 2007 season. So stop the chicken little stuff.

Re: Jammal Brown hurt!!!!!!!!!!!!

http://images.radcity.net/5346/2081751.jpgSaints Pro Bowl offensive tackle Jammal Brown suffered a bone bruise during the team's first practice of training camp Tuesday, according to team officials.
Brown collapsed to the field in obvious pain during a drill Tuesday morning, and had to be carted off the field.
Team officials say there were no signs of torn or strained ligaments in Brown's injured knee.
It is still unclear as to how long Brown will be out of the line up. Second year tackle Zach Strief and rookie Jermon Bushrod would take his place if Brown were to miss any playing time.
