First-Team Offense Improved, Not Satisfied
by Dave Lawrence, NewOrleansSaints.com
Friday, August 10, 2007 Friday night’s home opener against Buffalo saw the Saints’ offense come out firing, which must have pleased Head Coach Sean Payton following the less-than-spectacular fashion in which the first team got the preseason underway last Sunday. Quarterback Drew Brees was sharp, spreading the ball around the field to seven different receivers as he led the offense on a pair of extended drives and completed 12 out of 14 passes for 118 yards. At one point, the Saints’ Pro Bowl passer connected on seven straight throws with his streak being snapped as a toss just barely eluded Devery Henderson in the end zone. Brees completed three passes to Henderson while the duo was on the field, along with three more to the multi-threat Reggie Bush and a pair to his new tight end Eric Johnson. Not surprisingly, though, the signal-caller was not satisfied with the team’s performance, as the offense was only able to produce a pair of Olindo Mare field goal attempts despite racking up 142 total yards in the opening period. “We were a little sharper tonight on offense, but you would still like to see us complete those drives with touchdowns,” said Brees. “It was good to get out here and have another chance to go against someone else and see where we need to get better.” Running back Deuce McAllister was happy to get out on the field for his first action of the preseason, but much like his quarterback wasn’t happy with the lack of scoring. “You hope to show some improvement each week during the preseason and I think there was some of that tonight,” McAllister said. “We just didn’t score touchdowns – we play for seven, not three.” |
