Cool 3 Weeks In

Cornerback Jason Craft has been with the Saints since coming over in a trade from Jacksonville in 2004. Heading into his fourth season in New Orleans, the veteran is now one of the longer-serving members of the Black and Gold. He sees a lot of action on special teams and plays a key role in the nickel defense. Craft checked in with NewOrleansSaints.com Monday to report on training camp as the Mississippi portion of the summer winds down.

Going into our third week of camp we’re hanging in there and we had a good practice today. As of now my legs are a little wobbly; when you get into your third week of camp everything is really just mental. Physically you’re kind of beat up, but you just have to fight through it. We’re going to go ahead and knock this third game out and just prepare for next week.

This camp’s schedule is a little different than others that I have been a part of, especially having that early preseason game with the Hall of Fame game in Ohio and heading out to Cincinnati early in the week for our game Saturday. With all of that though, last year was a little tougher. Last year was a lot hotter and I think this year we got a little break.

The cornerbacks are looking pretty good. I think all the veterans are doing very well – me, Fred, Mike, and J.D. Then you’ve got the young guys and they’re trying to pick it up, but I think they just need a little more preseason experience to really get a grasp on NFL ball. The defense as a whole is doing very well. There’s good depth and a lot of competition – I’m very impressed. Specifically, Kendrick Clancy has really stood out to me with the good job that he’s been doing.

We haven’t touched on any Cincinnati stuff yet; right now we’re going over some things that we might have messed up in the last couple weeks. I assume we’ll start hitting some more specific things for the Bengals game tomorrow sometime. Every day is a grind but we’re improving – our preparation for another successful season looks promising.

Re: 3 Weeks In

Clancy will turn out to be our most important free agent signing. I wonder why he was so ineffective in Arizona. I'm elated we signed him and we didn't have to break bread for him either.
