Interesting Question....
Maybe someone with a better football knowledge can answer this question for me. Out of all, of the Superbowl winning coaches, how many started as defensive coordinators, and how many started as offensive coordinators? I am very interested to know, if defense really does win championships. : )

Re: Interesting Question....
... I would think that a more pertinent question would be to determine, of all SB winners, which teams were considered "defense-strong" teams rather than "offense-strong" teams. For example, the Ravens went to and won the SB on the strength of their defense, yet the coach was an offense coordinator prior to being the head coach of the Ravens. Then you have Dick vermeil, who I believe started as an offense coordinator, yet it was Mike Martz who made the Rams' offense what it was back then.
... I don't think that any coach started as a coordinator, but if you mean which coach went from offense/defense coordinator to head coach and won a SB, off the top of my head: Tony Dungy - defense coordinator with the Steelers Bill Bellichick - defense coordinator with the Jets Brian Billick - offense coordinator with the Vikings Bill Cowher - defense coordinator with the Browns? John Gruden - offense with the Eagles? Mike Shanahan - offense with the whiners Mike Sherman - offense with the whiners Jimmy Johnson - don't know, but his Hurricasnes always fielded a good offense Barry Switzer - won with Johnson's players and playbook, don't count, or counts as offense. Mike Ditka - that defense was Buddy Ryan's, and he sure as hell can't run an offense so it don't count either. George Seiffert - won with Bill Walsh's players, playbook, and DeBartolo's "under the table" finances, so it don't count either. Bill Parcells - defense with? .. in any case, SB winners are usually good on all 3 sides of the ball. |

Re: Interesting Question....
Actually, I just really wanted to know. Everyone always screams, defense wins championships, but, one of the best offensive teams, in Dick Vermeil's Rams, won with more of high powered offense, and a bend don't break defense. The AFC is defensively stronger, than the NFC, IMO, but offensively, with the exception of the Pats, and the Chargers, there's not alot of offensive minded teams in that conference. They all seem, to primarily depend on defense to win games. Once again, IMO. By the way I was up all night preparing this response. : )
