New Orleans Saints QB Drew Brees

Q: Can you discuss the advantage of being back at your practice facilities?

A: It’s nice. I definitely think you establish a mindset when you go away to training camp. You’re in a different location, obviously far away from home to eliminate distractions and come together as a team. You’re trying to take this offense and our whole philosophy to the next level. It’s nice to come home. We have another training camp away from home under our belt and we feel good about where we’re at. We’ve been able to say healthy, knock on wood, for the most part. Obviously we have some guys that are banged up that are coming back pretty soon. I think we’re really starting to get into that game mode mindset. If we can come back here and start getting back into the routine of things that’s great. This is our facility. We’re here the entire year. You start getting into the meeting rooms and gaining that routine which is huge.

Q: Can you discuss if you feel like you are in midseason form at this point?

A: We kept it pretty simple. We haven’t done anything too crazy. I still think we’ve only scratched the surface of what we can do as an offense and obviously we’re still getting some guys back that are healthy again. We have a lot of weapons and a lot of balls to be spread around. I’m excited about the possibilities and the opportunity.

Q: Are you concerned with the injuries bothering Marques Colston and Devery Henderson?

A: No, it doesn’t. Those guys are tough guys and they do a ton of running, obviously in training camp especially. I’m not surprised that from time to time these guys get banged up. You just have to have guys right behind them to step in and do the job. I think David Patten has done a good job and he’s going to play a huge role on our team this year, as is Terrance Copper. He did last year; he’s doing it again now. In my opinion, there might only be two guys that are listed as starters, but we have four or five guys that are starters at wide receiver on our team.

Q: Can you discuss how the injuries might be helping some other receivers’ opportunity wise?

A: It gives other guys opportunities. If I were to give an MVP for the training camp, it would probably be Lance Moore. That guy’s been incredible. I think he’s caught the eye of everyone here. We all saw him progressing. He works extremely hard. I definitely think he can contribute this year. It’s fun to see these young guys and the roles that they can have on the team this season. I think the competition makes everybody better.

Q: Do you think Lance has a chip on his shoulder and a hunger after playing on the practice squad most of last year?

A: I wouldn’t say it’s a hunger. I would say, as a young player you develop. You gain experience and the more reps you receive, the better you get. He’s always been a guy who’s been self-motivated, works extremely hard and can sit there and run routes for you all day long and look good doing it. I’m excited about where he’s at and how good he can be.

Q: Do you expect to play a half on Thursday?

A: I haven’t addressed it with Coach yet, but typically this third preseason game gives us a little bit more time.

Q: Coach Payton said that there will be more situational substitutions. Do you like that going in at halftime and maybe going back in for the third quarter?

A: Yes, you usually make your adjustments at halftime and when you come out for that first drive in the third quarter, it paints the picture in terms of adjustments. You want get used to going back out on the field after halftime instead of just shutting it down.
