Pierre Thomas Fan

Call me crazy, but I think FA RB Pierre Thomas is looking a lot better than 4th round draft pick RB Antonio Pittman. It's a shame because I think if we wouldn't have drafted Pittman, Thomas probably had a shot at making the team. Pierre Thomas hits the hole with a lot more authority than Pittman and he seems to be a lil quicker around the outside and has a nice lil burst of speed to get separation from the defender. I hope he at lest makes the practice squad.

Re: Pierre Thomas Fan

The Saints have good RBs and WRs, I don't care who they keep, they can't lose with any of them. I saw all the RBs and WRs getting yards, and catching balls. They Saints will have one of the top offenses once again.

Blacksaint,i'm with you on this one. This kid has talent. He'll never make it to the practice squad though, someone will pick him up. He needs to make the special teams squad.

Re: Pierre Thomas Fan

I want him on the team. I would drop stecker, if pitt and thomas can learn the block assignments. Pitt is our back up to Duce and Thomas can be bushes. Besides steckers cut would help the cap and maybe we can get 6 or 7 for him. besides I want to thomas doing more KR duties. Your right joe the odds are against him making final waivers. Hass should have taught us something

WhoDat205 08-24-2007 08:44 AM

Re: Pierre Thomas Fan

No way he clears waivers unless the FO and coaching staff for all 31 other teams are blind. deaf and dumb (both ways). Drop a receiver for him (Reggie's half receiver anyway), cut Stecker, whatever, just keep Pierre around.

Hagan, do you have any of your scouting reports on PT? Where'd he come from?

Re: Pierre Thomas Fan

All I knew about him before was his college ball at Illinois. Same college as Stecker wasn't it? I do agree though...Stecker has no upside. Thomas does. I'd risk the loss of depth on special teams and in blocking where Stecker gives us an edge to keep this kid around.

NOLAmite 08-24-2007 10:12 AM

Re: Pierre Thomas Fan

Wow... that kid was electric last night... he should be on the team over Pittman in my opinion... not only can he see the play develop and hit the holes accordingly, there's no quitting until he's down... Pittman had no sense of urgency runing the ball and stopped moving his legs when he contacted the defense... and don't even get me started on his blocking and blitz coverage... I would keep Stecker for special teams and let Pittman go...

Lance Moore and Pierre Thomas have been the biggest standouts of the preseason (non starters) for me...

two more Weeks!!! I can't wait....

Re: Pierre Thomas Fan

If we don't keep this kid, it won't be because he didn't give everything he had.

Everyone was told that we're starting the best 53 players, and if he isn't one of those, it's safe to say we're hypocrites. I've liked him since I watched him in the Steelers game and he's only gotten better with opportunity.

But whatever. I'm sure Payton will find a way to work him in there. Pittman will be a nice back too, he just needs development.

Thomas is defintely a keeper. I don't know how you can cut that kid with his performance so far in PS.

Here are some stats on Pierre Thomas from his days at Illinois.
He holds a few records in KR.

good god I hope none of them troll this site (lol) Is PT that good? or were we just moving the ball at will and a vol from the crowd could have done that.

The Sirus Radio guys thought Stecker over Pittman.

I know I am not smart enough to make such a pick. I like stecker - I hope he makes it on to another squad if we can't keep him. Hell, we can't have all the toys.

So were we really that good or was KC just plain awful?

The kid looked strong. Of course he was playing against 3rd stringers and camp bodies at the end of the game.

Pittman won't clear waivers. We'll have ended up drafting him just to give him away to someone else.

I agree with the earlier post that we keep the rookies and cut Stecker. It's more likely that Stecker would be available later in the season if needed as compared to trying to waive either Pittman or Thomas. It seems to me that Pittman can backup the Deuce role in the offense while Thomas can backup Reggie's role. Both would have to play special teams to make the squad.

Very true.

A combination of both. You can see the reason that KC rushed LJ for a record 416 carries last season and finally came off the big money to secure the guy. He'll stabilize their offense.

Our offense looks ready to rock. Brees looks like an MVP. Reggie clearly has gotten the feel of running downhill at NFL speed. I just saw the replay of the game and realized that if Payton were serious in the red zone and had all of his weapons out there, that it would have been 35-0 by halftime.

Our defense isn't dominating. But our offense is. I don't think the defense needs to be top 5 for the team to be successful. They just have to slow opposing offenses down enough to get off the field. It's easy to do with KC. Indy will be much tougher.

But I severely doubt that the Saints will actually encounter an offense that top to bottom is better than our offense. So if the defense only gives up an average number of big plays (instead of an exceptional number like last year), gives up an average number of YPG, and gets an average number of turnovers, then the offense will have opportunities to win the game.

Exactly.

It was one game folks. I'm trying to say he isn't good, but there's no way Pittman is going to get cut. I think Stecker is as good as gone and Thomas would make a nice addition if we were going to keep 4 running backs... but I don't think that's going to happen. Hopefully he'll land on our practice squad and we could use him like we've used Branch the past couple of seasons. But you never know... he could be the next Willie Parker. Too bad it won't be here.

OH Man, do I hope you're wrong. I really like this kid. Send Stecker packing with all his money. Keep the kid that's cheaper and better, Pierre Thomas. Much more upside.

agreed the guys got the goods
he has shown that he can come through in a clutch moment

The thing that sucks is that we can debate this till we are blue in the faces…
In the end it’s up to Payton

Do you think he reads the forums?

Re: Pierre Thomas Fan

Stecker will make the team, he's way too valuable as a third down back. Pittman in every game has missed his blocking assignments and got the QB killed. It's really wishful thanking to keep both Pittman and Thomas, but we all know teams generally don't cut their draft picks 1 - 5. So that might mean Thomas is the odd man out, now it specks volumes that he haven't been cut yet, and where's Jamal Branch? I think Thomas has Coach Payton attention and like I said before, this is going to be one of the hardest cuts a Saints coaching staff ever had to make. GOOD LUCK Payton, I'm glad I don't have to make those cuts.

Re: Pierre Thomas Fan

hmmm, I remember a few seasons ago when Deuce went down with an injury and Stecker kept the running game legit, I haven`t forgotten that. IMO Stecker has proven and earned the right to be a solid back up on this team. Would I cut Stecker for a rookie that looks good against 3rd stringers and camp bodies?.mmm I don`t think so. Would I like to keep Pierre? of course. But I`d find some dead weight elsewhere to make room for him, not waive a versatile proven vet.

Yep I remember that but you did not hear it from me. Thomas needs to get the ST resume going ASAP.

Depth chart

RB - Duce - Stecker - Pittman - Thomas
WR/RB - Reggie

there is my depth chart. If they can keep Dudley some how, some way, then all the better. I say make room for him by going with one less WR.

back in 1997 me an some friends went to some saints mini camps an there were 2 rookie qbs danny wer-weak arm a3rd rd pick an Jake Delhomme. We all thought he was head an shoulders the best qb.2007 from what i here pierre thomas looks best in mini camp best in regular camp in jackson best in preseason games all above antonio pittman.this is part of what sunk DA coach Ditka cant see the best player sticking with bad draft picks.Who cares if pittman was a 4th keep thomas admit pittman should have been the undrafted rookie.Thomas prob will not clear waviers pittman cant see a hole will not clear only because he was a early 4th rd pick an a lot of teams jump on this type of player.we have to keep our first rd pick which to be fair he has played hurt all peseason so i still think in time he will play up to the 27th pick.

Re: Pierre Thomas Fan

Pierre Thomas LOOKS BEST DAY AFTER DAY IN SAINTS CAMP GOING UP AGAINST SAME PLAYERS THRU OUT SAINTS DEPTH CHART.PITTMAN AGAINT THESE SAME PLAYERS ALMOST ALWAYS COMES IN 2ND.

hennr 08-25-2007 10:46 AM

Re: Pierre Thomas Fan

Also Thomas Has Looked Good In Camp As A Kick Return Guy An Has Looked Good Picking Up The Blitz An Looks Good As A Receiver Etc . Etc. All Above Pit Cant Break A Arm Tackle To Save His Life.

Re: Pierre Thomas Fan

My vote is cast on Pierre Thomas and Dudley (fullback).

I won't question Payton, that isn't my place.

But if Thomas turns to gold when he leaves, and Mike Karney goes down with an injury and we're scrambling for a fullback...

It'd be almost like the Haslett regime.

cadilacin 08-25-2007 12:51 PM

Re: Pierre Thomas Fan

Pierre Thomas had a very nice game. I was enjoying it like I was watching a "real" game...But it wasn't real. It was a Pre-Season game against katz who i'll be tryna buy insurance from in 2 weeks.

But with that bein said...I really like the kat. All of our RB's and WR's are nice. Thomas is cheaper and maybe a lil better than Stecker...but if 26 goes down, and we have to play somebody i'd rather have a back to protect Drew Brees vs a back wit a lil more speed. I wish we can keep em all...But since we tryna WIN A SUPERBOWL...Keep the veteran for insurance purposes.

But it really don't matter, because if any RB has to play besides 25, 26...we are in a lil trouble anyway.

NO MATTER WHO THEY KEEP. NO MATTER HOW OUR OPINIONS DIFFER...WE GON' ROOT FOR THEM THE SAME...CAUSE WE ALL BLEED "BLACK AND GOLD"!

And sure as hell, he will. If we cut this guy, he'll come back to haunt us.

We need Stecker for Special teams and Thomas has earned a spot. Looks like we wasted a draft pick on Pittman, his blitz pickup sucks and he hsn't shown anything. pittman goes

JOESAM2002 08-26-2007 09:12 PM

Re: Pierre Thomas Fan

Here's a thought. Since it's pretty sure that the starters won't play much ,if any) next week against Miami. What if Pierre has a great game? Is he a keeper then? Could you make a spot for him on special teams? What if outplays Pittman? Do you cut Pittman? Something to think about.

Re: Pierre Thomas Fan

I say Stecker goes.

Realistically, how many years does he have left?

I say we go with a youth movement, and at least they'll be developed by the time their time comes. And THEN imagine how dangerous 3-4 young talented running backs would be?

Stecker may be o.k. NOW, but we need to keep Thomas and maybe Pittman to help them develop. Stecker goes.

Maybe Sean feels he already knows what Stecker can do, but last week Aaron had 1 catch for 19 yards, 0 carries, and 0 special teams tackles

It might be a situation where you cut someone at a position with a lot of deapth that might still clear waivers (Jamal Jones) but whose loss doesn't hurt the team that much. That would make room for both Pittman and Thomas. Then you could trade Pittman early in the season to get some value for the 4th rounder.

Disclaimer: when it comes to FO dealings, salary caps, waiver and all that stuff, I have no idea how things work, so that may not even be an option.

this might be a good option for both Dudley and Jones. There is less of a chance someone will pick them up.
Even though he has not done too much so far, I don't think Pittman will clear waivers

Trade Pittman, somebody we just played is looking for running backs. Get What we can for him. I'm not impressed with the fact that he goes down at first contact. Keep Thomas for special teams and backup running back. At least he keeps his legs moving after the first hit.
