Coming to take my medicine.
I was very optimistic to the naysayers in the last couple of weeks relative to the Colts. The game isn't over, but it's clear at 34-10 that the game is over.
The defense was overmatched. It's clear that David isn't yet ready to handle the responsibility of being on the island yet. He (or McKenzie for that matter) didn't look any better than GameShow (that would be Fred Thomas). In addition I now have serious serious doubts about Simineou. When the Colts were running the ball down our throat, the guy wasn't getting off blocks and getting the back before he got to/past the second level. But I'm most disappointed in the offense and the playcalling. It's clear to me that Coach Payton still has not learned his lesson from the Chicago game last January. The Colts were content to fall in that 2 deep shell and force Brees to throw underneath. The solution to that is to pound the ball. Don't be cute. Just hand it to Deuce and keep running it. If you want to see how effective a strategy it is, simply look at the Colts tonight. Nothing was working in the first quarter. Then in the second they started pounding the ball. That opened up the passing game deep, and doomed our defense. The Saints defense isn't yet talented enough to control a game. The offense is supposed to be. But once again they allowed the opposing defense to dictate their game strategy. I don't mind mixing it up, but when in doubt just run the ball downhill. So I guess I'll suck up the loss and take a bit of shine off my optimism. It's certainly not the end of the world. It's the first game. It's an AFC team. The most damaged things that come out of the game are ego and perceived reputation. I hope that Coach learns his lesson. I've learned mine. I tip my hat to ssmitty in particular tonight. As pissed off as I am, I'm trying to remember that we just lost to the SB champs. Maybe this will be a wakeup call for the Saints...something to remind them that last year doesn't matter. It's a new year and nothing carries over.

We all jumped head first into the hype. Maybe the players and coaches did a little bit, too, I don't know. Maybe this will ground this team and let them know that they have a lot of work (obviously). 1 down, 15 to go.
I do know this: It's tough to go into Manning's house, play him and the SuperBowl champs after they had 2 1/2 - 3 week watching film on your and preparing their game plans, and expect our defense to keep up in the 2nd half after being hung out to dry by the 3-and-out offense. There's a lot of season left. If we throw out all this Superbowl favorites junk and focus and working on the probs, this ship can be righted. |

SFIAH - I agree that the Saints should have tried pounding the ball. Doesn't matter who, just line up one of the RB's behind Karney and get busy. If it results in a punt, so what. Eventually, it will open up the offenses opportunities. Too bad tonight was all about bad blocking...
I think the Saints should always have a goal of running the ball 40 times per game. Eventually that will force 8 man fronts and open up enough passing lanes for a guy like Brees to have his way with defenses. With one of the best FB's in the business, along with two of the best RB's, it would be lethal. |

Plenty of time to iron out some issues but i agree you gotta run the ball when the Colts D figured on making the throws difficult with their D scheme.

I don't think this coach likes to run the ball. He likes to throw it. You see how he drafted a WR in the first round in the draft. I do wish Robert Meachum was ready to play. He Colston and Henderson could be the best WRs corps in the league.

It's hard to say that running the ball more would've helped when Deuce's and Reggie's avg run was about 3yds a carry each. We simply weren't playing well. Brees made a lot of mistakes with his throws, Reggie dropped 2 passes he really shouldn't have, the running back weren't getting the blocks that they needed, and the defense was abysmal.

We got schooled at all levels - but only in the second half.
The D was fine in the first half. Hell, they even scored. We could've won this game had the offfense actually decided to show up for the game. |
