NOLA.com NFL Power Rankings (Week 2)
Posted by David Gladow
September 11, 2007 After a week of NFL action, what do we know? 1. We know the Colts and Patriots are good. 2. We know the Falcons and Chiefs aren't. 3. We know idiot sportswriters will attempt to assign numerical value to all the teams. 4. We know I'm an idiot sportswriter. Thusly, here are my NFL Power Rankings for Week 2. Enjoy! 1. Indianapolis Colts (1-0) Last week: No. 1 Last game: Defeated Saints 41-10 This week: at Titans Gladow's take: Peyton Manning dismantling the Saints defense was not surprising; the Colts "D" stealing the show (and cementing Indy as No. 1) was. 2. San Diego Chargers (1-0) Last week: No. 2 Last game: Defeated Bears 14-3 This week: at Patriots Gladow's take: No need to get too reactionary, as those were the defending NFC champions out there, but the Chargers will need to generate more offense that they did against Chicago to win this week. 3. New England Patriots (1-0) Last week: No. 3 Last game: Defeated Jets 38-14 This week: vs. Chargers Gladow's take: They looked dominating against the Jets, but let's see them do that against San Diego this week. 4. Pittsburgh Steelers (1-0) Last week: No. 9 Last game: Defeated Browns 34-7 This week: vs. Bills Gladow's take: The Browns looked like a high school team Sunday, but the Steelers had a lot to do with that. 5. Seattle Seahawks (1-0) Last week: No. 7 Last game: Defeated Buccaneers 20-6 This week: at Cardinals Gladow's take: The class of the NFC (by default) looked completely lethargic against Tampa Bay but still won. 6. Cincinnati Bengals (1-0) Last week: No. 8 Last game: Defeated Ravens 27-20 This week: at Browns Gladow's take: The special teams are awful, but the offense is as good as ever and the defense looks improved. 7. Denver Broncos (1-0) Last week: No. 12 Last game: Defeated Bills 15-14 This week: vs. Raiders Gladow's take: Getting a road win in the AFC is always difficult, so Denver gets some credit for last week's squeaker. 8. Carolina Panthers (1-0) Last week: No. 13 Last game: Defeated Rams 27-13 This week: vs. Texans Gladow's take: Yet another example of why the preseason is meaningless, Carolina romped over the Rams and looks like a real contender right now. 9. Dallas Cowboys (1-0) Last week: No. 14 Last game: Defeated Giants 45-35 This week: at Dolphins Gladow's take: Tony Romo was spectacular, but that defense (which is missing ailing cornerback Terence Newman) could be a major problem. 10. Tennessee Titans (1-0) Last week: No. 16 Last game: Defeated Jaguars 13-10 This week: vs. Colts Gladow's take: The Titans, for all their problems and distractions, keep finding ways to win. That may come to an end against the Colts this week. 11. Baltimore Ravens (0-1) Last week: No. 5 Last game: Lost to Bengals 27-20 This week: vs. Jets Gladow's take: Steve McNair and the Ravens offense looked bad, raising some concerns about this team's playoff aspirations. 12. Chicago Bears (0-1) Last week: No. 6 Last game: Lost to Chargers 14-3 This week: vs. Chiefs Gladow's take: A loss to the Chargers is forgivable. A loss next week, to floundering Kansas City, wouldn't be. 13. New Orleans Saints (0-1) Last week: No. 4 Last game: Lost to Colts 41-10 This week: at Buccaneers Gladow's take: For as awful as the loss to Indianapolis was, it didn't erase the team's Super Bowl aspirations, especially with a weak NFC to contend with. 14. Washington Redskins (1-0) Last week: No. 18 Last game: Defeated Dolphins 16-13 This week: at Eagles Gladow's take: Despite a near-miss against Miami, the Redskins have a lot of good to point to going forward. 15. Houston Texans (1-0) Last week: No. 23 Last game: Defeated Chiefs 20-3 This week: at Panthers Gladow's take: The Texans were brutally efficient (thanks in part to new quarterback Matt Schaub) in dismantling the sad-sack Chiefs. 16. Detroit Lions (1-0) Last week: No. 20 Last game: Defeated Raiders 36-21 This week: vs. Vikings Gladow's take: Beating the Raiders is not a cause for celebration. This week's game with Minnesota will tell us more. 17. Buffalo Bills (0-1) Last week: No. 15 Last game: Lost to Broncos 15-14 This week: at Steelers Gladow's take: Was Buffalo's loss to Denver a fluke, or is this team going to disappoint all year? J.P. Losman has to be better. 18. Green Bay Packers (1-0) Last week: No. 29 Last game: Defeated Eagles 16-13 This week: at Giants Gladow's take: I still contend that the Packers offense is uglier than the SuperDome (zing!), but the defense and special teams may propel Green Bay to a few more wins. 19. San Francisco 49ers (1-0) Last week: No. 24 Last game: Defeated Cardinals 20-17 This week: at Rams Gladow's take: It was sloppy, but the 49ers will take any win they can get. Next week they can make a statement against St. Louis. 20. Minnesota Vikings (1-0) Last week: No. 28 Last game: Defeated Falcons 24-3 This week: at Lions Gladow's take: One must temper last week's win with the knowledge that it came against Atlanta. Still, Adrian Peterson looks great. 21. Jacksonville Jaguars (0-1) Last week: No. 17 Last game: Lost to Titans 13-10 This week: vs. Falcons Gladow's take: Poor play-calling was the biggest culprit behind last week's loss, but David Garrard didn't set the world on fire either. 22. New York Jets (0-1) Last week: No. 11 Last game: Lost to Patriots 38-14 This week: at Ravens Gladow's take: I'm not sure the Jets are as bad as their blowout loss to New England might indicate. We'll find out when they travel to Baltimore this week. 23. Philadelphia Eagles (0-1) Last week: No. 10 Last game: Lost to Packers 16-13 This week: vs. Redskins Gladow's take: That loss to Green Bay was a baaa-aaad one. Is the game against Washington now a must-win? In the NFC, probably not. But still, it's big. 24. Arizona Cardinals (0-1) Last week: No. 19 Last game: Lost to 49ers 20-17 This week: vs. Seahawks Gladow's take: The Cardinals will have to start winning divisional games if they want to make any sort of noise at all this year. 25. St. Louis Rams (0-1) Last week: No. 21 Last game: Lost to Panthers 27-13 This week: vs. 49ers Gladow's take: After a disappointing outing on nearly all counts, the Rams will look to rediscover the concept of "offense" against the rival 49ers. 26. New York Giants (0-1) Last week: No. 22 Last game: Lost to Cowboys 45-35 This week: vs. Packers Gladow's take: The loss to the Cowboys hurt. The loss of Eli Manning was crippling. A swiss-cheese defense probably won't help matters. 27. Tampa Bay Buccaneers (0-1) Last week: No. 25 Last game: Lost to Seahawks 20-6 This week: vs. Saints Gladow's take: Here's guessing that at least three quarterbacks play for Tampa Sunday against the Saints. 28. Miami Dolphins (0-1) Last week: No. 31 Last game: Lost to Redskins 16-13 This week: vs. Cowboys Gladow's take: Better than expected against Washington, the Dolphins may still be in for a long season of offensive ineptitude. 29. Oakland Raiders (0-1) Last week: No. 27 Last game: Lost to Lions 36-21 This week: at Broncos Gladow's take: The Raiders weren't the worst in Week 1 by a wide margin, but they weren't good either. At least now it's rivalry week. 30. Cleveland Browns (0-1) Last week: No. 26 Last game: Lost to Steelers 34-7 This week: vs. Bengals Gladow's take: That was an epic smackdown the Browns suffered against Pittsburgh, but the thought here is that the Steelers may just be that good. 31. Kansas City Chiefs (0-1) Last week: No. 30 Last game: Lost to Texans 20-3 This week: at Bears Gladow's take: Showing little to no signs of life against Houston, the Chiefs now get to roll over for the Bears. Hooray! 32. Atlanta Falcons (0-1) Last week: No. 32 Last game: Lost to Vikings 24-3 This week: at Jaguars Gladow's take: Can this team get any worse after self-destructing against a mediocre Vikings team? With Joey Harrington at quarterback, I'd wager that they can. NOLA.com NFL Power Rankings (Week 2) - David Gladow - New Orleans Sports |
