Cut Mare

Cut Mare, sign Connor Hughes
I watched every one of Hughes' games at Virginia, the guy can kick. And he has a strong leg too.

He was the star of preseason 2 years back but couldn't beat out Carney.

This preseason he kicked for Pittsburgh - and was 3 for 3 - but couldn't beat out Jeff Reed.

Last year after getting cut by the Saints, he played for the Rhein Fire in NFL Europe - and was a perfect 7 for 7.

WORTH NOTING: Was one of the nation's best kickers throughout his career ...placed his name all over the Virginia and ACC record books ...holds school records for points (332), field goals made (66) and attempted (79), and extra points made (134) and attempted (138) ...made 83.5 percent of his field goals to rank second in UVa history ... broke Virginia's 90-year old record for career scoring as a senior in 2005 ... third in ACC history in points and tied for fourth in field goals made ... kicked five of the 12 50-yard field goals in Virginia history ...is the only kicker with more than two ...owns three of the top-11 points totals in school history, as well as three of the top-five field goals made totals ...kicked three game-winning field goals in his career (2003-Wake Forest, 2005-Syracuse, 2005-Minnesota) ... is one of only seven players in Virginia history to start four bowl games in his career ... had an incredible resume of success in bowl games, making all 16 extra points and nine field goals, while scoring 43 points ...competed in the kicking portion of the College Football All-Star Challenge on ESPN in February 2006.

Re: Cut Mare

Mare, not only costing us millions, but now he's costing us games too. WHY...Payton...WHY?! *sobs wildly*

First, it's the lost faith in Deuce, leading to Payton cutting his carries and abandoning the run in Chicago - and all other games since.

Second, it's the total disrespect for Carney and his accurate leg - by cutting him for someone who can make TOUCHBACKS??

Pardon me, but I don't think you score any points on touchbacks.

I thought the Mare signing would be a good one, but hoo dang was I wrong. I'll gladly eat some crow, but with the way this season's going, that's just one more bad taste in my mouth.

Re: Cut Mare

I'm not really disappointed in the season anymore, I got over that after we got blown out by the Titans on MNF. I just want to see progress and willingness to try new things at this point. I want to see what our younger players are all about, and I want to see if Payton's willing to change up a bit and try other things and newer players.

Honestly, I don't care if we go 0-16 at this point, I just want to see something that would indicate the Coach trying new players, etc.

I would not be shocked if they did cut him.

QBREES,
Find this guy Hughes, call him up and tell him to report to Saints training facility Monday. Please.

Mare singlehandedly (footedly?) lost us that game yesterday. Cut him.

Re: Cut Mare

Here's all you need to know: Mare has made only 3 out of 7 field goals for a 42.9% accuracy rating. Enough said.

Did you even watch the game?

I'm pretty sure the Saints failing to score a touchdown on that 10-minute drive.......along with Devery Henderson tipping a ball right to a DB.......along with Jamaal Brown's penalty on the Stecker touchdown (which led to having to settle for 3 points).......along with Payton's dumbass decision to try a 53 yard FG with 2 AND A HALF MINUTES LEFT by an injured kicker.....had just as much to do with the loss as Mare.

If he does get cut, it'll be because his overall performance thru the first 4 games hasn't been stellar, not because he whiffed on a FG that he never should have been lined up for anyway.

Thank you BlackHoleSlam for that much needed dose of reality.

Like I've said in numerous threads. I was angry at this decision before the season even started. I am even angrier now. He NEEDS TO GO!

Valid points. However, too many times this season our offense has at least put us in position to get three points and we walk away empy-handed. That can kill the mentality of a team. He needs to go!!!

Oh I agree, that's why I included the part to say "IF he got cut, it'd be because his overall performance hasn't been stellar". And it hasn't. Hell, I didn't think Vanderjagt was kicking all that bad in Dallas last year when he got cut, but apparently Parcells didnt feel he was as reliable as he should be.....so in came Gramatica. But for LordofEntropy to put the loss solely on Mare.....well that's just stupid.

Re: Cut Mare

I never like the trade but cutting him is not the answer. Besides he still is our best special teams weapon on kick offs.

Re: Cut Mare

Someone here mentioned that Connor Hughes had a great pre-season with us last year but could not beat Carney. Not so much that he could not beat him....they both did very well but...Carney had like 14 years on the kid. Well....I think its time to call him back.

Oh, c'mon. My statement was not stupid. Mr. Mare missed a TWENTY YARD FIELD goal in that game. He kicked it so low an ELBOW managed to block it. A twenty yarder, Hole. Twenty yarder. How much did we lose by?

We both know the answer - 3 points.

So yes, you can say that Olindo Mare single handedly (footedly) lost us that game.

yea it's not JUST the 53yd'er...he has BLOWN many kicks this season AND in preseason. he's awful..injury or not. it wasn't just this week, it's his life...he failed.

Re: Cut Mare

Payton need to get his head out his a**. He keeps on saying its not the kickers fault we lost. Some of it may be true. This dude Mare sucks. He would probably miss a field goal that was 2 inches high and it would go wide right. If anyone sees Mare kick him in the

Only 3 of 7 made. That's 3 made, 4 missed. Accuracy rating 42.9%. Enough said.

Re: Cut Mare

I rarely get predictions correct, but here is a copy of a post I made on 04/12/07 at 2:14PM:
Quote:

First, let me say that it's nice to be back. Second, I'm not sure that this was a wise move considering that Carney was 23 of 25, with one of the two misses from beyond 50 yards, and Mare was 26 of 36, with 5 misses from beyond the 50. Even if you remove the 50+ yard misses from the equation, that still leaves Carney at 23 of 24 (96%) and Mare at 26 of 31 (84%).

Jamaal Brown lined up incorrectly, calling back a Stecker touchdown. We had to settle for a Field Goal. That's 4 points....OMG 4 POINTS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!111111111111111111

How many points did we lose by?

"We both know the answer, 3 points".

So yeah, it was stupid to place ALL of the blame on Mare. But for what it's worth, I was really hoping they'd sign Vanderjagt this week because I, like many others, simply am not at ease when Mare lines up for Fields Goals as I was when Carney did so.
