Cut Mare
Cut Mare, sign Connor Hughes
I watched every one of Hughes' games at Virginia, the guy can kick. And he has a strong leg too. He was the star of preseason 2 years back but couldn't beat out Carney. This preseason he kicked for Pittsburgh - and was 3 for 3 - but couldn't beat out Jeff Reed. Last year after getting cut by the Saints, he played for the Rhein Fire in NFL Europe - and was a perfect 7 for 7. WORTH NOTING: Was one of the nation's best kickers throughout his career ...placed his name all over the Virginia and ACC record books ...holds school records for points (332), field goals made (66) and attempted (79), and extra points made (134) and attempted (138) ...made 83.5 percent of his field goals to rank second in UVa history ... broke Virginia's 90-year old record for career scoring as a senior in 2005 ... third in ACC history in points and tied for fourth in field goals made ... kicked five of the 12 50-yard field goals in Virginia history ...is the only kicker with more than two ...owns three of the top-11 points totals in school history, as well as three of the top-five field goals made totals ...kicked three game-winning field goals in his career (2003-Wake Forest, 2005-Syracuse, 2005-Minnesota) ... is one of only seven players in Virginia history to start four bowl games in his career ... had an incredible resume of success in bowl games, making all 16 extra points and nine field goals, while scoring 43 points ...competed in the kicking portion of the College Football All-Star Challenge on ESPN in February 2006. http://www.vagazette.com/sports/va-s...,4343461.story |

Re: Cut Mare
Mare, not only costing us millions, but now he's costing us games too. WHY...Payton...WHY?! *sobs wildly*
First, it's the lost faith in Deuce, leading to Payton cutting his carries and abandoning the run in Chicago - and all other games since. Second, it's the total disrespect for Carney and his accurate leg - by cutting him for someone who can make TOUCHBACKS?? Pardon me, but I don't think you score any points on touchbacks. |

Re: Cut Mare
I thought the Mare signing would be a good one, but hoo dang was I wrong. I'll gladly eat some crow, but with the way this season's going, that's just one more bad taste in my mouth.

Re: Cut Mare
I'm not really disappointed in the season anymore, I got over that after we got blown out by the Titans on MNF. I just want to see progress and willingness to try new things at this point. I want to see what our younger players are all about, and I want to see if Payton's willing to change up a bit and try other things and newer players.
Honestly, I don't care if we go 0-16 at this point, I just want to see something that would indicate the Coach trying new players, etc. |

I would not be shocked if they did cut him.

Re: Cut Mare
Mare singlehandedly (footedly?) lost us that game yesterday. Cut him.

Re: Cut Mare
Here's all you need to know: Mare has made only 3 out of 7 field goals for a 42.9% accuracy rating. Enough said.

If he does get cut, it'll be because his overall performance thru the first 4 games hasn't been stellar, not because he whiffed on a FG that he never should have been lined up for anyway. |
