Newly acquired DT says New Orleans is 'place for me to be'

Monday July 28, 2003

By Jeff Duncan
Staff writer

Before he signed with the Saints on Sunday, Henry Ford was unaware of the club's unstable situation at defensive tackle.

"I really didn't know any of that until the day before I was supposed to drive down (from Dallas)," Ford said before his day of practice. "That wasn't a concern of mine.

"The conversations I had with Coach (Jim) Haslett were the smoothest I had with any coach. I got a good feel for him over the phone. I just felt like the need for me was genuine, and this was the place for me to be.

TEMPERS FLARE: The second session of team drills was briefly interrupted by a skirmish between starting safeties Tebucky Jones and Mel Mitchell.

\"That\'s part of football,\" Haslett said. \"You get skirmishes out here. It\'s a little unusual when the players are on the same side of the ball, but they\'re fine.\"

\"There was a little disagreement,\" Mitchell said.
Not sure why this struck me as being so damn funny.

Hopefully it\'s a case of one pushing the other to be more competetive. One guy blows a play and the other gives it to him......best case scenario they use this to fuel each other to be better and develop respect for one another.

Camp fights are normal and not usually too distractive. IMO it shows passion and is a good thing.

I heard that Tebucky caught Mitchell out of position a few times and was coaching Mitchell on the field and Mitchell didn\'t appreciate it. Mitchell need\'s to remember that Tebucky was brought in to be a leader on defense and help the rookies out.

Considering Mel\'s age and amount of experience maybe he should listen to what Jones has to say. On the other hand Jones is new to the team and Mel is not so maybe they BOTH should bend some towards each other. This is not a bad thing but could develope into a issue if not closely monitored. We need this until to mold together and play as one. They have plenty of time to work out these type of things.

Are you kidding, Haslett is probably loving this. It fits his demeanor.

I read in an article that they were both fighting over a jointly held football. One pulled then the other an one didn\'t appreciate it. Sounds like we may have a defense going here.

This could get very interesting indeed! If this , fighting over the ball, is what actually happened then I like this attitude. Two safeties that actually WANT the ball!! This could work out well.
