Saints run defense.....

There are some surprising things in this......

SunHerald.com : Saints boast improved run defense

Re: Saints run defense.....

I'm not surprised. The run D looked great at times not only against Carolina.

Re: Saints run defense.....

I tend to think that those numbers are off for one good reason. You come out against the Saints and you throw the ball. Our pass D has sucked so bad that the best way to score on is is pass. You score enough points and take a commanding lead against the Saints that you force the Saints out of a running game and into the come from behind passing-mode.

The one difference you will notice is that against the Panthers the Saints came out throwing and agressive trying not to allow the Pahters to get up on us by a lot of points early. That would have force the ball into Carr's hands and let him try and beat us. -which obvious never happened.

I disagree Euphoria. The attempts to run the ball are there, which proves that the stops were also there. It would be different if run attempts were down to 10 -15, but both quotes show the last two teams tried to run the ball approx. 30 times, and both were kept under 100. Not bad - in fact I will pay closer attention to run stops this week in Seattle. I've been looking for something positive. Those numbers are not a bad start.

Re: Saints run defense.....

Thats fine... if you disagree. I said tend to... like leaning towards a stance but not comitting one way or the other yet.

What I am leaning towards just to clarify though is that more teams are exposing our pass defense (which would mean possible less yards on running plays and attempts). Even attempts can be missleading if you make more first downs you get MORE ATTEMPTS.

To prove my point is that we have also given up 8 TD passing this qrt of the season which would put us on pace to top last years 28.

Boasting our Run defense is much improved which arguable its not by much... is one of those stat things and I have to agree... "stats are for losers".

The Saints had little trouble halting the Panthers as they rushed for 88 yards on 28 carries.
The same could be said for the previous week when the Saints faced off against Tennessee. The Titans' top-ranked rushing attack averaged more than 200 yards per game. The Saints defense slowed down the Titans to a crawl as they ran for 98 yards on 34 carries.
So an article is making a case that the Saints D-line is getting better and your response is "stats are for losers".
You're too much, Eeyorephoria.

I thought Foster was going to have a decent game going against the Saints, not to be, great job up front..
IMO that game was a BIG plus for our defense.

You never cease to amaze me. I don't think there's anything that can make you happy. All this doom and gloom, makes me not even want to come in here and read. Jesus, I wish you'd have something good to say. This crap is old.

They may be stout against the run, but can they stop Euph's constant life-suck and downward spiraling.

Re: Saints run defense.....

Well, on the surface, I would say having Hollis Thomas starting is a big help for the run defense. I know I was ready to throw this guy under the bus during the preseason, but I now clearly see how valuable he is. Hollis did not start against the Colts and Joseph Addai basically had a field day. Since then, Hollis has either had significant more playing time, or has been starting.

Truer words were never spoken. I too was upset with him but it seems he has turned it around. I hope he keeps it up.

Just to make it clear... I am not on a downwars spiral or constant life suck mode. Just not letting people get away with putting the blame on one person that doesn't deserve it and totally neglect the real problems.

I DVR all the games, and watch them (in misery this year) over and over again. And I must say that the run defense has been Ballin. The secondary has supported the run hard so far.

I'm still positive about this team. Minus a few plays, we could be 2-2.

I know alot of us are down on Fred Thomas, but I think he is our 2nd best Man to Man corner. With David out...I think Fred may make a few plays for us this week. I know he looked bad against Steve Smith sunday...but who doesn't.

And I agree with you boys about Hollis. He played awesome last week.

Remember the Titans (no pun intended) went 0-5 last season, and made a strong run at the playoffs. Our schedule don't look to tough...I'm still holding on to my 10-6 prediction.

So...Keep up the run D.

And

Go Reggie Go!

Classic Euph!! Golden. :p

How can you guys get tired of the ONE GUY who consistently slaps us in the chops with a stone-cold dose of reality?? Let's not get too carried away with stats and prognostications..... our team has more issues than the Mendez family. When will they be addressed?

Euphoria 10-12-2007 12:49 AM

Re: Saints run defense.....

I have them on DVR to... big deal. We got blown out by 3 teams not just 2. Ever here the expression "Horse Shoes and Handgranades"?

Are we really going to compliment a D who can stop a run but can't put pressure on a QB giving up like 30 points a game??? WAAAA HOOO go defense.

Easy there Papz.... I consider myself and almost all of my posts to be pretty optimistic. I'm not always a "fan" of Euph but I appreciate what he brings to the table. REALITY CHECKS.

Now, about those Saints.....

Re: Saints run defense.....

hey papz, Euph likes to slap you with reality that has a touch of extremism. ok sometimes it is overboard but I like it myself. Always gets you to think so you can slam him.

Euphoria 10-12-2007 11:28 AM

Re: Saints run defense.....

You say the word 'Pessimistic' like its a bad thing.

One thing I am tired of is that not for the people who has been here for years and even during the off-season, but for the ones who come here once in a purple moon or just reads stuff here. That the problems have existed for years and have not been addressed. Everyone wants to point fingers at the key/glory positions players but unless they have Blockers I don't care who good your glory players are they are going to be crap. Thats not Pessimistic, that reality baby!

You can dislike Brooks all you like but he suffered the same fate that Brees is going through right now... hmmm, so the problem must be the shoes?
