We got on a roll last year starting the season off by beating up on 3 "bad" teams in a row (Browns, Packers, & Atlanta), and that was enough to build confidence, gain momentum, and carry us to the NFC Championship. Don't under estimate the importance of confidence and momentum in the NFL.

Doesn't matter. At the time they were 2-0 and their running game was looking phenomenal. In other words, they weren't bad heading into the Saints game.
Question: If the Saints went 12-4 this season, can Tampa Bay and Carolina brag about beating a GREAT Saints team in weeks 2 and 4? |

Have you ever heard of a "bad 2-0 team"? Records are not always indicative of how good a team is or isn't. Those two wins came against a Panthers team that finished 8-8 and a Tampa team who finished 4-12. We were a good 2-0 team, and they were a bad 2-0 team, and we proved that when the two went head-to-head.

Using your logic........if the Saints go on to have a successful season this year, we can say they were a "good 0-4 team". Well, they weren't. They were a team that got completely embarrassed 3 of those 4 times. Of the 4 losses, the only team you could say (at that point in time) that appeared to be inferior to New Orleans despite beating them was Carolina.
You can say that the Saints had good players.....resiliant players.....good coaches.......good personnel, whatever........but there was nothing good about them as a "team" during the first month of this season. If you recall at the time of that Saints/Falcons game.....the big storyline (aside from the Superdome re-opening) was that both teams were 2-0 and fighting for 1st place in the NFC South. Now, if you wanted to say that the Saints beat a "bad Falcon team", it would apply more to their 2nd meeting of the season than the first. |

A lot of folks had the Falcons going to the playoffs at that point in the season. |

BlackHoleSlam, the Saints are a good team, not great team, that played poorly in the first 4 games. Why are you arguing symantics? The Falcons were a bad team last year - period. They may have been 2-0 at the time, but there have been a few teams to start off a season 2-0 and not be good. Remember, you can be 2-0 and be lucky, instead of good. However, luck will eventually run out, but good teams continue to win. Are you a closet Falcons fan?

I can agree with you that records aren't an indication how good your team is based on schedule of opponets and football gods have to be looking in on ya from time to time. With this said you can see why we could say we over-achieved last year based on this arguement. We did look good against the 49ers but I'll agree lets keep this in perspective... its the 49ers, not the Pats. We might be the best 3-4 team out there but winning a SB is a bit of a reach. |
