Did you notice that 1st quarter catch by Patten where he broke a tackle and turned it up field for a big gain? ... well, we're lucky the Jags didn't review that play because Patten went down from tripping on his own feet and got up and spiked the ball before he was touched by a Jag. If you'll watch the highlights you'll see what I'm talking about.

I'm not throwing rocks at Patten, he played his butt off, but that was a bonehead mistake that he got away with.

I didn't. I was having a fit over that play. Patten needed to get up and continue running. He wasn't down by contact. I was certain that he had turned the ball over.

Re: David Patten

I agree that Patten was not down, but I wonder if the refs blew the wistle before he got up and spiked it.

He still played a great game... we did get lucky on that call. I'm loving the 3 WR set with Colston, Patten, and Moore.

He had a great game. But yes, that one play was a boneheaded move.

We got a lucky break on that one.

I agree he's a vet he would have got up and gone... there must have been a whistle. I'll have to go back and look at the tape tonight.

Re: David Patten

Yes, I was worried about the Jags reviewing it. If the refs blew the whistle it couldn't be reviewed but the problem I still have is our inability to get up to the line and snap the ball to avoid a challenge. Brees did get us to the line but had to audible to get a play called giving the Jags plenty of time to challenge unless they knew it couldn't be challenged.

Re: David Patten

I just watched this play a couple more times.

Patten was clearly touched by 3 or 4 defenders during the run. The last contact came about 5 yards before he hit the turf. Essentially he was pushed but didn't fall immediately and then fell trying to make a cut.

It is pretty clear that the whistle blew.

So I guess my question is: How long does a contact last? If a player gets touched by a defender and trips over his own feet 20 yards down field without being touched again, is he down?

I think they have to make a "football move", so if he was tripped, stumbled a couple of steps and fell, that would be down by contact, if he regained footing and made a cut (AKA Football Move) then fell, he's still live.
