Let's Hope the Payton is Ready to Re-Sign Carney Once Scobee is Back for the Jags
Below is an excerpt from a Sept. 12th story on the Jags' website regarding the signing of John Carney to replace their kicker, Josh Scobee, who hurt his quad during warm ups:

"The Jaguars signed 43-year-old John Carney to a one-year contract, telling him he would be around as long as Scobee is on the shelf. Carney and four others, including Mike Vanderjagt and Billy Cundiff, worked out for the team Tuesday. The Jags decided on Carney because he offered the best combination of accuracy and leg strength."

It has now been more than 6 weeks since the injury to Scobee occurred, which was the outer limit to how long he was project to be out, such that Carney's release from the Jags should take place shortly. Let's hope that Payton is not too proud to admit a mistake and will re-sign Carney to finish the 2007 season. We cannot afford to leave easy points on the field - it has already cost us one game (Panthers).

That said, I would keep Mare on the roster to handle kickoffs and would let him try the long field goal attempts where it is clear that Carney just does not have the leg to get it there. Mare has plenty of leg, just needs work on the accuracy.

It's a shame to tie up 2 roster spots on place kickers, but having good performance in both special teams aspects in more important than having a fourth tight end. We can spend a mid to low round pick next year on an all in one place kicker.

Never happen. If they sign anyone it'll be soon.

Totally. I mean, he's only made 526 out of 534 over his career. And that includes 4 missed in the last 10 years! What a loser.

I would welcome Carney back in a heartbeat. I would rather take my chance on him, rather than taking a chance on Mare at a critical time. As for kickoffs, I would not worry about loosing Mare. Weatherford can handle the kickoffs. No way would I keep two kickers on the team at this point.

I would love to have Carney back. But if I were Carney, then Payton, Loomis, and Benson better be ready to get on their knees and kiss my bare behind while holding two thumbs up for the cameras.

So would I. But it might be to late when he is and if he is available. I never disliked Carney, I thought it was great when we signed him. To me it looks like we're stuck with Mr. Wide right.
