Still giving Sean Payton a pass?

this is a discussion within the Saints Community Forum; I think it was a crap call by Payton and it was the most obvious play that cost us the game. I was stunned. Infuriated. In disbelief. SICK. But what about Reggie? If we're going to be calling out folks ...

But what about Reggie? If we're going to be calling out folks who are getting "a pass" he's number one on my list.

He's in his second year and still can't get his act together! I found it interesting during the third quarter when he came out after he'd been shaken up (and we still hadn't gotten a first down) and was replaced by Stecker we managed TWO first downs.

When is this kid going to figure it out? I'd like to think sooner rather than later...but sooner's been here and later ain't sounding too good right now.

I don't know, maybe if someone held all of his endorsement checks in the endzone maybe he'd have a better chance of scoring. Worth a try...and we know how Payton loves the trick plays...

Re: Still giving Sean Payton a pass?

that was the worst play call i have seen from S.P. He should know better. would parcells have ever done that? Bad timing for a trick play and Brees should have spoke up

Re: Still giving Sean Payton a pass?

last year it was play calling like this that got us to the division championship game. This year teams have learned to look for the unexpected from us. The defense has to play with discipline. Unfortunately for us Duce is not in there. This is where more than any other time in the game he is needed. We need another "06 Philli Killer Drive" to win. Not only this game but a few others. The play call was well defensed and would have gone no where. I like the play but pitching to Henderson alone puts a lot of ifs into it. But not at this point in the game. So Reggie can do what ever that funky off season workout whatever it was and pitch the ball. Henderson I really do not think he will be back. Unless he takes a major pay cut. Even then I have to wonder. I do not think Sean will call that play at that time of the game ever again

But last year it was a different time and place (3rd and goal against the Falcons IIRC). Also we pulled off this same play with Lance Moore this year in a game.

But this wasn't the place for it.

If that's the case then it may actually worth losing the season over this year. We didn't need to score. We actually didn't even need yards. We needed to protect the ball and exposing the ball like this was criminal! Hand the ball off to Karney, Bush, or Stecker 3 times then punt.

I hope Payton learns. I really do. It seems like he's understanding that you need to run the ball more consistently. But don't run gadget plays when the chips are down. Man up and punch the opposition in the mouth.

D*mn I wish we had Deuce out there. The only person that played D was Mike. We didnt pressure the Qb that much. We let Joey G. get over 100 yds in the 1st half. This idiot Payton called te dumbest play in sports history. Reggie is not used to getting a of running plays like that and is wearing down his body. We need Deuce because thats when everyone is at there best. We need to draft D-line players no more Offensive players. Matter of fact Saints should just change their names to something else.

Well Buddy, the problem is that none of that is going to happen. We don't have Deuce and won't till next year if then. You're right that Mike Mckenzie played one hell of a game. Him and Fujita played their hearts out. But two out of 11 ain't real good. You're also right about the play, it was the stupidest play i've ever seen in 40 some odd years of playing and watching football.
I also agree that Reggie is NOT an efery down back. He's great at what he SHOULD be doing, but Payton chooses not to use him that way. Why? I can't answer that. He should bring up Jamal Branch, who csn be an every down back. He has the size, speed and I think the durability to do the job. Why hasn't Payton brought him up? Who knows. Payton almost got bit yesterday when Reggie had to come out hurt. It left him with 1 back, Stecker. But he put Reggie back in hurt and all. Not smart if you ask me, but it was the only choice he left himself.

As far as the draft. I think it's to early to start worrying about it but if you ask me we need to draft cornerbacks linebackers and defensive linemen, in that order. Defense for sure needs to be addressed in the off season. We can work with the offensive players that we have now, if we risign the players who's contracts run out this year.

Without defense, we will never ge even a good team, much less a great team.

There you go Hagan, how's that for blgging?

P.S. One more thing, changing the name of the team won't change anything. We are the New Orleans Saints now, and hopefully always will be.

BUt you and I both know, we've never done that. At least not without Deuce in the game.

Please bring up Jamal Branch!!!!!!!

Re: Still giving Sean Payton a pass?

Come on guys we may have had a chance to win the game, but we didn't deserve to. The flea-flicker should have been either broken up or intercepted. That was a horrible choice to throw and a bad throw, that we got lucky on.

Our Defense is horrible, MM continues to play well and SF is playing well, our D line was concerned about getting up field that we never contained McCown all day long. We made a backup look like he had Vick's legs, Elways arm, and Montana's smarts. Our defense sucks, and if I see us draft a damn offensive player other than a lineman in the draft I think I will pull all my damn hair out.
