Coach Payton "Genius"
Author Lee Russakoff Comcast Sports
The term "genius" is thrown around way too lightly in the NFL. Joe Gibbs was hailed a genius for his three Super Bowl titles, but would a genius call two timeouts in a row and cost his team the game? My daughter knows you can't call two timeouts in a row in the NFL, and she hasn't even been conceived yet (she's a scratch golfer, by the way). After last year's incredible run, Sean Payton was the genius du jour. But does a genius run a reverse-counter toss on his own 37-yard line, with three minutes left in the game, leading by three points? Did the spirit of Rich Kotite possess Payton's body? The thing is, when you're in the Bottom 16, you already have the dearth of talent, intensity and character necessary to lose. There's no need for your coach to pile on with his own ineptitude.
