A Guide to Proper Jersey Etiquette

New Orleans Sports Report - David Schexnaydre Jr. - NOLA.com

Thought it was a good read.

Sometimes, however, I am amazed in a bad way. Like when somebody is wearing a jersey of a player that everyone hates and whose departure from the team was celebrated (Aaron Brooks anyone?). Sometimes I see jerseys that really just aggravate me to the point where I contemplate walking up to the person wearing it and offering to buy them a new jersey. I don't know why things like this bother me, but they do. I saw a guy with a Tebucky Jones jersey on the other day and I almost snapped and drop kicked him in the back of the neck. True story. Now, while this is just further proof that something is seriously wrong with me, in the words of the famous George Costanza, "Do you ever get down on your knees and thank God that you have access to my dementia?

Nice story. I would be willing to bet that fans wearing Brooks jerseys in the Super Dome are very prone to having beer, nachos, and whatever else is available thrown at them. Hell, if it's a Sunday Night game, that poor person could really be in for it. We all know how drunk that crowd is for Sunday Night games. Remember that dumb fan that showed up at a Raiders game with Miami Dolphin gear on? Well, Raider fan tinkled on him. I think Saint fan has it in him to do worse, especially on a Sunday Night. LOL...

I guess my number 7, Morton Andersen is a no-no now. Unless, he retires this year. Or is it next year? I usually break it out for the Falcons game to get their goat.

Re: A Guide to Proper Jersey Etique

Let me play devil's advocate here... Now both teams (Hornets and Saints) have been crying out for more local support for years to the point where each owner has threatened at one time or another to move their team to a more "supportive" market.

I'll admit that both teams' ticket prices are among the lowest in the nation and fans should support their teams by attending games, but merchandise/food/drink prices are outrageous.

Sorry Mr. Schexnaydre, but you can't have it both ways. This is not New York, this is not Chicago, this is not San Diego....This is New Orleans. There are many, many more things our fans are spending money on these days...like to help rebuild their families' and their childrens' futures. Instead of pointing the finger at what a fan looks like at the game, let's celebrate the fact that we can all enjoy our teams together at all.

Since the writer of this piece has soooo many jerseys hanging in his closet, why not bring one to each home game he attends and instead of "drop kicking in the neck" the Tebucky Jones fan - hand him something that he could use.

And isn't THAT, my fellow New Orleans fan, (as you wrote)...

"And isn't that what sports and being a fan are all about anyway?"

Re: A Guide to Proper Jersey Etique

Not to get all highbrow on anybody, but there is a good line in the recent Esquire about wearing jerseys:

"There is a name for the type of man who looks good in a sports jersey...

...it's 'professional athlete' "

Obviously, there are different rules on Sunday.
