Saints interested in Vilma?
Jonathan Vilma can fly away
"It's unclear what the Jets are seeking, but there's no doubt that Vilma's value took a hit because of major knee surgery last November. Vilma has started jogging and hopes to be running full speed in about a month, he wrote this week on his Web site. If he can show he's healthy before the April 26 draft, it will greatly enhance his stock. Sources believe the Jets could get a third-round pick, perhaps slightly higher, for a healthy Vilma. The Jaguars and Saints are believed to be among the potential suitors. The Saints have made no secret of their desire to acquire a middle linebacker, as they've already made an offer to former Dolphin Zach Thomas." Not sure of the extent of his knee injury? What do ya'll think? |
Re: Saints interested in Vilma?
I wanted this guy back when he was available in the draft. As long as his knee is 100% recovered, then I still wouldn't mind seeing him in a Saints uniform. If they don't pick up Thomas, then I would say pull the trigger on this deal. I wouldn't mind seeing a third rounder slip away for Vilma.

Re: Saints interested in Vilma?
I like it. Now the medical is key. I have already said I also like Dewayne Robertson at DT. Neither fit the 34 defense and I wonder if a package deal could be reached involving both. Maybe the two for our #1 and Stinch (they need OL ).
Greed has me wanting to swapping seconds or getting their third to make it work. That way the jets could try to move up in round 1. not like it would be a major cap hit. Two number 1s for another 2 number 1s for the jets. We would get both cap hits but would miss out on the #10 salary hit and Stinchs cap numbers would help absorb the money. Okay we have all been here before and I remember the responses and I still like the idea. |
Re: Saints interested in Vilma?
Dewayne Robertson and a healthy Vilma just sounds too good to be true.

Re: Saints interested in Vilma?
I have Vilma as the number 2 target on my offseason wish list. Forget about Zach and Morgan and Briggs...this is the guy the Saints should make a serious play for. Every single player in the league has some kind of issue...whether it be salary, injury, off field, lazy, or just a plain old butthole.
This guy makes a ton of sense. |
Re: Saints interested in Vilma?
That microfracture surgery scares me. That's a bad injury to try and come back from. If he's healthy, though, he's a monster. If he passes the physical and we can get him for a third round pick, I say pull the trigger. We could throw in Stinch and maybe use our second rounder to try and bring in Robertson too.

Re: Saints interested in Vilma?
I completely agree with Narwhal, that's one of the worst knee surgeries you can have. I wouldn't trade anything more than a third for him, and if I could I'd try to make it a 4th. He might be a good player, but microfracture isn't something to mess around with, it's one of those things where the guy is never the same. I say that if we are really interested in Vilma, we do an EXTENSIVE check on him with a gaggle of doctors. I'm talking like 12th and 13th opinions here to make sure that his knee heals the way it's supposed to heal.

Re: Saints interested in Vilma?
I would rather Vilma over Thomas without a doubt....A-Vilma is younger...B-VIlma has a knee injury, which will re-occur less than head injuries. 3rd rd pk and Simenoau(Is he gone yet?)

The Jaguars and Saints are believed to be among the potential suitors. The Saints have made no secret of their desire to acquire a middle linebacker, as they've already made an offer to former Dolphin Zach Thomas. Former Jets defensive coordinator Donnie Henderson was recently hired by the Jaguars as an assistant, which explains their interest. |

Undersized and lame, but better than what we got.

Then an OT with the 3 or 4 depending on what we would give away this year with the Vilma trade. We also need a second CB, a S and a WR and another young QB if we can find someone worth it in the lower rounds (if Palko is gooed enough to be our no 2 guy). |

Re: Vilma can fly away
I would go with a 3rd this year and a conditional next year. If he plays all year it would be a 4th, 12 games a 5th, 8 games a 6th and none for anything below that.
|
Re: Vilma can fly away
How about a conditional pick next year...if he plays all 16 games it could be as high as a 2nd rounder...if he gets hurt or if he just misses some time, it could be a 3rd or a 4th.

Re: Vilma can fly away
I love what this guy has done with his career. That season he had in 2005 was just incredible. The part I don't like is he may be an extremely high injury risk for the rest of his career. Check this out:
The part I want you guys to see is under the trivia category: Vilma was diagnosed with osteochondritis dissecans (OCD) in high school, a bone defect that can cause instability and loose particles in the joint, and this is a possible cause behind his season-ending 2007 injury. |
Re: Vilma can fly away
with a bad knee he is still better than any MLB we currently have.

Re: Vilma can fly away
i wanted the saints to draft him, so I'll gladly take a flyer on him now ( if the price is right)
