Shockey

i just heard chris mortensen on espn radio say that the saints are talking to the giants in an effort to trade for shockey.

if he can stay healthy, big if, this could be a nice move for the saints

Re: Shockey

Uhhhh. I can't believe I'm going to say this, but I certainly hope not. Shockey is an attitude problem, waiting to happen. I like his spirit, but he is a MAJOR distraction. Great player when healthy, but I don't know about this one.

We have no one left but Mark Campbell. If the $$$ is right, I say pull the trigger and keep off incentive laden contracts.

What about Crumpler? Is he still available?

I think we have the people in the right places to keep problems players bring, to a minimum...I agree if the money is right sign him

What happened to Billy Miller?

Re: Shockey

I have no doubts about his ability, its just his attitude and the attention that he thinks he deserves. Its funny how Eli Manning grew up all of a sudden when Shockey went down with the injury...all that being said, i would probably still take him.

pakowitz 02-28-2008 08:44 PM

Re: Shockey

i would take him for 2 reasons..

1. he just wants to win..the guy is passionate about winning, you have to give him that.. he calls out everyone b/c he wants to win and everyone blasts him for it..

2. he is better then any TE we have had in forever.. immediate impact on the offensive side of the ball.. huge target over the middle and it will open holes up for colston on the outside and running the slants that he does so well

maybe the dude had a reality check when the giants went on to win without him

herd on espn radio from chris mortensen that the saints have made a trade offer to the giants for jeremy shockey. they have also made an offer to the jets for jonathan vilma.

Hopefully the Vilma deal will involve a conditional pick. Hell the Shockey trade too, if he calls someone a Homo we only have to give them a 7th!!

Re: saints want shockey

We're making an effort to get better... can't complain about that. I wouldn't mind Shockey here as he would finally give us a legitimate TE threat we haven't had in a very long time. I am concerned about giving up our draft picks though... we have a the Vilma deal going on too. What's going to be left to draft with?

Re: saints want shockey

I was thinking the same thing papz. the shockey deal was said to be "substantial" i dont know what that means, but i hope its not our first or 2nd.

we dont have any tradable players that can be called substantial, i certainly dont think shockey is first rounder material. maybe we swapped firsts with them? im not against the idea of bringing shockey in, i just dont wanna give up much needed draft picks. we cant get younger and more talented on D by trading all our picks.

I love the aggressiveness the Saints are showing this offseason. They are slowly but surely making a name for themselves on a National level as a top-tier NFL team.

Re: saints want shockey

good point, whether we agree or disagree with the moves the Saints are contemplating, they are doing what we all wanted them to do...which is make a concerted effort to improve this team.

Great call, I love that we aren't being complacent. I actually wouldn't even mind trading some of our later draft picks (ie, anything below the 3rd). Shockey is a proven Pro Bowl talent that would add another dimension to our offense. Despite his attitude, which IMO, has been better over the last year or two, I still think his ability outweighs his attitude problems.

Somebody mentioned that maybe we swapped first round draft picks with the Giants, which would be interesting. While that would be a lot of value to give up for Shockey, I really don't know if would end up being that bad. We could still take a guy like DRC or maybe even Keith Rivers if he's still there. I don't know, whatever happens, I just like that they are being proactive.

Re: saints want shockey

I will definitely root for Shockey if he comes to New Orleans. On that note, I am not totally convinced he is an upgrade. Extremely talented yes. But over his career he has dropped way too many easy passes. I can see us all here after a game in which he drops an easy TD, $itching at the Saints front office for trading for this dude.

From RotoWorld:

"Report: Saints call Giants about TE Shockey"

"ESPN's John Clayton reports the Saints have contacted the Giants about Jeremy Shockey.
He probably isn't available, but it's interesting nonetheless. New Orleans' top two TEs from '07, Eric Johnson and Billy Miller, are both unsigned. We still can't imagine the Giants moving Shockey for more than a package of picks, including the Saints' second-rounder (No. 40). The Jints may even ask for a first. Feb. 29 - 12:03 am et"

Personally, I hope it's not true. Let him throw his helmet around someone else's bench. We don't need his drama.

Re: saints want shockey

I would not give up the 40th pick in the draft for Shockey...the Saints are going to need that pick to find another defensive player. Even if we finalize the deal for Vilma, we still need 5 more guys for the defense before we start giving away draft picks for a TE...although I am sure Brees would love to have another TE like he had in San Diego.

DING DING DING!!!!

One heck of a statement Boba! This is all I have ever wanted from the Saints' FO. Give us the tools to win with.

I think Shockey, will be fine, would like to have him. Yes, I was not a fan of his attitude, but Pak, hit it on the head. The guy wants to win, and hates losing (maybe just a little more than others).

Very happy with the Saints FO!

Re: saints want shockey

Here's the thing with Shockey:

1.- He's a Hurricane, so out of college he had an attitude.
2.- He landed on the Giants, and got 2 years of Fassell, Collins, and Tiki; his 2nd year the Giants blew big desert wind, the coach got fired, etc
3.- then he gets Eli as his QB and Emperor Palpatine as HC, with Tiki still whining in the lockerroom... now Eli, SB ring and all, he is not the type QB that can lead guys like Shockey. Shockey has too strong a personality which probably intimidates Eli.
4.- You know that no matter what, not being able to play in that playoff run and SB is got to be tearing him up inside... listening to all those comments about how the team was better without him, and how Eli was able to lead the team because he wasn't in the huddle...

Enter the Saints:
1.- He's got something to prove.
2.- His QB would be Drew Brees. No intimidation there.
3.- He'd be in an offense where he will get the ball.
4.- His HC would be a young coach who like offense.

Yep, I wouldn't mind seeing Shockey in NO at all.

Draft one. Save the trades for qualified defensive starters.

A first or second round pick? Are they nuts??!!

Where can I find complaining icons to add to this post?

Re: saints want shockey

I agree that the 1st round pick is too high, but here's my philosophy on trading a player for a pick:

If you can get a young, proven commodity like Jeremy Shockey, then you should absolutely do it. The guy is a gamebreaker and would bring something to this team that we haven't had in a long, long time. In fact, I bet you could argue that he'd be the best TE to ever suit up in the black and gold. He's young, which means he still has his best years in front of him, and you know what you're getting. Trade him for a second or third round pick makes complete sense to me. Let's look at a few of the second round picks that we've made in the last few years: Roman Harper, Josh Bullocks, Devery Henderson. Now I of course don't believe that just because we have sucked at drafting second round picks in the past, that we are going to do that this year, but my point is that we thought we were going to be getting some good players in the second round, and honestly, they all blow. I'd take Shockey in a heart beat for the second round pick.

FireVenturi 02-29-2008 11:27 AM

Re: saints want shockey

I would offer them the third rd pick and if they dont take it.........move on

papz 02-29-2008 11:30 AM

Re: saints want shockey

I definitely wouldn't trade him for our 1st round pick... that would be pretty stupid. Our second, probably not either as we draft pretty high in the second round. For our third than definitely... that's good value for a Pro Bowl tight end.

darby 02-29-2008 12:24 PM

Re: saints want shockey

shockey would be a HUGE asset if his 'tude remains in check. if meachem turns out to be a big producer, our offense would be unstoppable with shockey added to it.

if anything happens, it wont happen until around the draft. on the plus side, we got vilma for a pick next year, so another trade is a possibilty.

D_it_up 02-29-2008 01:43 PM

Re: saints want shockey

I would love to see a big-play tight end in the Saints offense. Remember that Brees had two favorite receiving targets in San Diego, one being Gates. If he could have another receiving threat like that, Brees would have so many options it would put his head on a swivel with Colston, Bush, and Shockey. You could throw the waterboy in as a 2nd receiver and it wouldn't make any difference. If Shockey is the answer, go get him.
