Saints nearing deal with Vilma
The Saints are close to finalizing a deal that will bring middle linebacker Jonathan Vilma to the team in a trade with the New York Jets, league sources said.
The deal could be announced as early as later Thursday night or sometime on Friday. Vilma, 6 foot 1, 230 pounds, is a four-year NFL veteran. He played in nine games for New York, his season shortened by knee surgery. He had 43 total tackles in the nine games he played in 2007 for the Jets. more vilma news
Jonathan Vilma is "very very close" to becoming a New Orleans Saint, according to the Washington Post. The New Orleans Times Picayune reports the Jets and New Orleans are "close to finalizing a deal." The Redskins "nosed around" Vilma, but never showed serious interest. The Lions also wanted him, but have less incentive to offer draft picks, assuming that's what the Jets were looking for. Newsday guesses that the Saints will be sending a third-round pick to New York. It's not out of the question that the Jets would in turn send that pick to Carolina for Kris Jenkins. Jonathan Vilma |

Awesome, I'd rather get Vilma than a D-III safety. This would be a great pickup if true.

welcome to the board 5800...hope you enjoy it.

Re: Saints nearing deal with Vilma
How high do we think the conditional draft pick could be? By the way, I'm PUMPED!!!!
|
Re: Saints nearing deal with Vilma
probably between a 2nd and 4th...based on production.

Re: Saints nearing deal with Vilma
Greetings. I've been following this board for a few weeks. Good conversation.
Weighing in on my favorite team. I'm concerned with the Saints possibly signing JVilma. He has been a very good player in the past but his knee is a major concern. I hope we aren't jumping to fast to sign a MLB since this seems to be a weak spot for free agency. |
Re: Saints nearing deal with Vilma
I trust the coaching staff, but this move tests that trust.
The guy couldn't shed blocks before the chronic knee defect became an issue. |
VILMA is finally a Saint.

Re: VILMA is finally a Saint.
I am excited about this move...i know there are injury questions but if this guy stays healthy, then we finally have a young, active, speedy MLB that can make plays. And the fact that its a pick in NEXT years draft makes it that much better...hopefully we wont be picking in the top 10 again next year.

1 down... Two to go.

Re: Saints nearing deal with Vilma
You are going to love this guy. It is too bad for us that he didn't fit into our system, but I am excited for Vilma to be somewhere that can really showoff his talent.
I am glad that he is heading down to NO. And he is going to look good in the black and gold. |

seems to be a high number of new members around tonight...welcome to all of you.

Re: Saints nearing deal with Vilma
Okay, I think this is a little better deal in that it's a conditional pick based on production and probably not until 2009. Not bad. If he recovers to the same LB he was prior to the surgery then it's another Drew Brees type signing. If not, we probably don't lose much. I still say draft a MLB in the 2nd round.

Re: VILMA is finally a Saint.
I am making a prediction that linebacker will not be our 1st round pick in the draft.
|
Re: Jets May Have Already Dealt Vilma To Saints
welcome aboard Cal. You have a couple of other west coasters here also.
Now if this works out this could be a great deal. I forsee him sitting for at least half the season rehabing. Driving down the draft pick. We did it with Mech so why not him? We got all the other LB back now so it will not hurt us to sit him and let him get healthy. |
Re: VILMA is finally a Saint.
Awful news. At least we know who this year's Jason David is.

Re: VILMA is finally a Saint.

NFL free agency begins with flurry Spurs win seventh straight game FBI opens Clemens investigation Top stories | Rumors | Video | Photos The Jets have agreed in principle to send the Pro Bowl linebacker to the New Orleans Saints for a conditional draft pick based on Vilma's playing time, as he's coming off major knee surgery. Although there had been reports that the Lions were the frontrunners to acquire Vilma, ultimately the Saints came away with the 6-foot-1, 230 pounder. New Orleans tried to sign Zach Thomas, who eventually signed a one-year deal with the Dallas Cowboys last week. Vilma stared in the 4-3 scheme but struggled when Mangini installed the 3-4 when he came to New York in 2006. A knee injury sidelined Vilma for much of the 2007 season and required surgery. The four-year pro has started 53 games with six interceptions, five forced fumbles and 2½ sacks. He also won Defensive Rookie of the Year honors in 2004. |

I need to see some serious head busting this year from our LB's. From what I read I guess this is offically a "done deal." This could be the year guys!!!!

Re: Jets May Have Already Dealt Vilma To Saints
I think I agree with Hagan **was it Hagan that said Vilma will probably sit half the year or more**? Whoever it was, I tend to agree with them

Future conditional draft pick. I read last night that it was between a 2-4 in '09 depending on playing time and production.

Great deal if we didn't have to give up anything this year.
