The defense has some things to work on but at this point I'm not overly concerned. At this point it's one preseason game. Nothing more. Nothing less. I know there is going to be much criticizim of the coaching staff, players, and everything else anyone can think of, but, how much can you base off one preseason game. At least try to keep it REAL!!! |

Billy, I agree to a certain extent. You can\'t base too much on the first preseason game. But I sure was hoping for something at least a little better that I saw tonight. We simply looked outmatched, out played and at times, damn sloppy tonight.
I liked Brooks\' series and look forward to seeing how much better he can be (I believe he\'ll be a great QB -- one of the best ever for the SAINTS). Michale Lewis is always exciting. J.T. O\'Sullivan looked much more like a #2 guy than Woodbury or Bouman. Keaton was a disappointment, but Williams looked pretty good. Hilton and Boo Williams both looked alright catching the ball. Special teams played well most of the game -- except for that pitifall blown punt coverage play. But no one really impressed me much on defense. Sure Craver and Rodgers had some nice tackles, but we missed way too many tackles and there was virtually no pressure on the D-line, not to mention no sacks. All in all, it was a lackluster performance, especially by the second stringers (not as bad for the 3rd and 4th string guys). Let\'s just hope everyone was embarrassed enough that they get their **** together and improve in the coming weeks. Go SAINTS!!!!! David in Houston |

The Saints kept it real tonight, real bad, Go back and look at your predictions and see how close they came. I point this out not to bust your balls but to show even real expectations were not met. Yes the sky is not falling and of course there will be improvement, But it is was\'nt a good thing to go out and get our asses handed to us like that. The eagles are a good team and they showed us how far we have to go to be one.
The line play was awful on both sides and not just as a unit , individualy we were handled and handled with ease. I saw nobody generate any pass rush at all in the first half. On offense our line was whipped and opened few holes. Our LB\'s were invisable. Rogers made the only play of the whole first half. Receivers were open all over the field ,they could of passed on us all night, long or short. Tackling was a real problem, there is no excuse for this. This is a basic skill of the game it must be done better. This was a completly inefective showing by the people who mattered most. I won\'t say our season is doomed, and if this serves as a wake up call great. Its hard to find much to think this was good in any way though and thats real. [Edited on 8/12/2003 by saint5221] |

Your right saint5221. the Saints did not look good on defense tonight. But next week what if they dominate? What kind of conclusion can one draw then?
I\'m as disappointed as anyone about the performance of the defense, but I\'m still not overly concerned. And I would tell anyone that is down because of this one game. that preseasons are usually a roller coaster ride. So hang on and don\'t get too high with the highs and too low with the lows. The big thing is there was no major injuries.... |

Nah, it\'s preseason. No biggie.
I\'m glad the defense went out there and sucked it up. Now it\'s on tape, the coaches have something to make each individual work on. There is talent on this new Defense, and now the coaches have a definite direction to correct their mistakes. That is a good thing. The offensive 3 and outs? Again, no biggie. I\'m not worried about our offense until we face a team that has not won a game, has the worst defense in the league, or the calender reaches December. It got the offense off the field and away from injuries in a meaningless game and made the D go out there so we can get some tape on \'em. It\'s just preseason, don\'t sweat it. |

Yea I wouldn\'t get too worked up due to the fact that we had 8 new starters on defense in their 1st game versus the Eagles who had 2 new starters on a dominant D. Of course we were gonna look bad.

To me, the thing to keep in mind is that the purpose of preseason is to evaluate players and not to win the game, although no one wants to lose.
While at some point in the preseason the Saints defense will start to show what kind of defensive scheme they will use, the first preseason game is usually about as vanilla as it gets. However, vanilla or not, there were way too many missed tackles. Missed tackles are missed tackles. I don\'t care if it\'s pee-wee football or the NFL. This is not acceptable. I\'m not the coach, but if I were, I would make sure that every player knew their starting job was on the line. I don\'t care if your name is Johnathan Sullivan or if your a free agent. You don\'t tackle, then you don\'t play and you might get cut. I\'m sure the practices will intensify and the taclking should be better next week. There were a lot of guys that could have played if it were a real game and I think in years past Haslett would have played some of them in preseason. I beleive that Haslett is trying to keep the players fresh to avoid the late season collapse and I think this will help come December. On defense the Saints called no blitzes (which was expected) and wanted to see what kind of pressure the front four got. Well, there was no pressure and if affored the Eagles all day to sit in the pocket. There is too much talent on the defensive line for this to continue to happen and I don\'t think it will. In the defensive secondary, they had there work cut of for them going up against the short ball control passing game of the eagles\' west coast offense and when there was no pass rush it just made the problem worse. Bottom line is that the defense should have played better and the coaches are going to have to correct the problems. I\'m not really concerned right now because it was just one preseason game and the first one at that. I\'ll leave the moaning and groaning to the doomsayers. I suppose that, like any normal fan, I\'d feel more comfortable heading into September if my team went 4-0 or 3-1 in the preseason as opposed to 1-3 or 0-4, but in the grand scheme of things, I won\'t waste any energy worrying until Week One. Until then, I\'ll keep smiling when I hear fans lamenting a loss in the middle of August. [Edited on 12/8/2003 by BillyCarpenter1] |
