Sammy Knight
I am trying to get a second opinion on this. I loved Sammy Knight when he was a Saint. When I think of him, I think of a headhunter. If I remember correctly he was a great safety. I watched a little bit of him in Jacksonville last year and he looked pretty good. My question is does anyone think we should have looked at him to come into our rotation and mentor our young safeties? He signed a contract with the Giants today 3 yr 5million. Seems cheap to me. Any insight would be great.

Re: Sammy Knight
sign him so he can retire a saint.

Re: Sammy Knight
damn i wanted sammy back
not as a mentor but as starter :) ESPN - Sammy Knight Stats, News, Photos - Jacksonville Jaguars - NFL Football |
Re: Sammy Knight
yeah I wanted him as a starter, but he could mentor Bullocks and Harper, retire a Saint and then maybe coach. I just thought with the price the Giants got him for we should have jumped all over him. I think he would have made our secondary instantly better.

Should we have re-signed him? We should never have let him go in the first place. Sammy kicked ass. When you needed that clutch interception in the last two minutes to save the game, Sammy was there to pluck it from the air. They decided that, even though he could break up passes, make interceptions, and was a good tackler, they wanted a safety with SPEED. So we dropped him and replaced him with the mighty Tebucky Jones. And just so you know, Tebucky Jones was a GREAT tackler, it's just that everyone he tried to tackle was smeared with butter. It was a horrible violation of the rules, but the Refs never called it. This is 100% true BTW, I got the story from Tebucky's grandma herself. Yeah, it would have been good to have Sammy back. His loss is just another part of the legacy of Jim Hasbeen. |
Re: Sammy Knight
Even though I don't know much about Sammy Knight, from the way you talk about im, he seems like a great accusition if we could get him.

Re: Sammy Knight
You know over the years I have thought that I was the biggest Saints fan in the world and noone else felt my pain of being a fanatic for a team destined for underachieving. I spent 14 months in Iraq, 12 months in Korea- all that time still following the Saints. I wish that during that time I would have known about the black and gold website. You guys are truly Saints fans(unlike the fairweather bandwagoneers that I know)and it's truly refreshing to be able to discuss the one team that we all feel so passionatley about. Thank you for the responses and I have a feeling this is our year(I have been saying that since the days of Bobby Hebert and Steve Walsh). Keepin the faith in New Iberia, La.

Re: Sammy Knight
we are trying to upgrade our secondary..
|
Re: Sammy Knight
I know they are trying to improve the secondary but if we would have brought in a veteran(cost effective) safety it would have made a huge difference.
|
Re: Sammy Knight
we have a couple veteran safetys.. we dont need older slower ones..

Re: Sammy Knight
Sammy Knight officially a Giant
he Giants have officially signed S Sammy Knight. According to someone familiar with the terms of the deal, it's a three-year, $5.15-million contract with a $1.25-million signing bonus. Not a bad deal for both sides after Knight signed a one-year, $820k deal with Jacksonville last year. |
Re: Sammy Knight
Sammy didn't look old and slow last year. He made plays and laid pipe. Pak I am sensing your not a Sammy fan.

Fan or not, he'll finish his career a Giant. Sammy was big for a while and his popularity faded. I think Pak was saying that we need some new blood and younger talent for the long term then to bring back an aging veteran. Regardless, I thought he was an asset to the team and we missed out on some of his more productive years. |
Re: Sammy Knight
I don't care young, old, whatever we just need a headhunter that makes recievers think a little bit before they catch the ball.

Let me ask you this- do you think the quality of play from our cornerbacks(precisely David) made our safeties look worse that they are, and with the addition of Gay do you think our safeties will look better? |
Re: Sammy Knight
no, actually i think the opposite... i think the crappy coverage skills of bullocks made david look worse then he actually is.. i think harper played well at times and should be better this year since he actually only got to play 1 year ( he was injured his rookie season).. i really hope we pick up another safety b/c bullocks has regressed every year and it looks to be the same this season
i also think that David, coming from a team that played cover 2, really relied on our safetys to play over the top when they were actually supposed to.. and bullocks' routine to always bite on play-action left us vulnerable to the deep ball.... |
Re: Sammy Knight
I like your assessment Pak. But tell me this - which safeties are you targeting in the offseason... do you have a choice on FA or draft? If draft, in which rounds?
|
Re: Sammy Knight
The defense as a whole stunk the dome up against the pass. We stopped the run well but at the cost of pass defense. Our team is not built to do both. Now we can have a shoot at doing both. Vilma needs to play by mid season even in spot duty. Gay and Young need to both step up at CB. david needs to moved into the slot at the 3 position. Most importantly Bullocks needs to regain his form from two years ago and move forward. A DL that can react fast enough against the run when in pass defense is the big thing up front. Youth is key here. We were always a step off last year. We are moving in the right direction lets just wait and see what other moves are made.

man this is a really weak safety class, both in the draft and Free Agency.. i wouldnt mind seein us pick up phillips in the 2nd.. his stock is on the decline b/c of his showing at the combine but he has first round talent but doesnt seem to play upto his ability at times.... after that... it gets kinda hit or miss.. Kenny Phillips S | (6'1", 203, 4.45) | MIAMI (FLA.) Scouts Grade: 87 Flags: (D: DURABILITY) Player that can't stay healthy View by: Player | NCAA School | Position | NFL Team | Flag | All Ranked Players | NFL Draft History You are signed into Insider and have access to the exclusive draft content below. Strengths: Reads routes well, shows excellent range in zone coverage and is experienced playing a centerfielder-type role. Changes directions well, explodes out of cuts and is capable of matching up with slot receivers as well s tight ends in man coverage. Times jumps well, fights for the ball while it's in the air and can come down with jump balls. Aggressive, reads opposing quarterbacks' eyes and flashes the ability to make plays on coverage. Fills hard when reads run, closes well and flashes the ability to deliver the big hit. While doesn't always do a great job of breaking down, generally wraps up upon contact and is an adequate open field tackler. Vocal, gets teammates into position and is a leader on the field. Weaknesses: Has the second gear to recover in most situations but can be overaggressive, is vulnerable to play action and gets caught out of position too much. Lacks elite ball skills and a player with his talent should be more of a playmaker. Doesn't read keys all that well and takes too many false steps. Lacks elite size and can get engulfed by linemen. Takes too long to shed blocks, occasionally avoids contact and is going to be more effective playing off the line than he'll be lining up in the box. Takes poor angles to the ball, can overrun plays and should make more plays in pursuit. Tough and can play through pain but missed the final three games of the 2006 season with a broken thumb and durability is somewhat of a concern. Overall: Phillips started the final 11 games of his true freshman season in 2004 finishing with 88 tackles including 58 unassisted tackles and three tackles-for-loss. He also recorded an interception, a fumble recovery and four pass breakups that year. Phillips started the nine games he appeared in during the 2005 season finishing with 71 tackles including six tackles-for loss. He also recorded four interceptions and six pass breakups up that year. Phillips started the 11 games he played in during the 2007 season finishing with 82 total tackles including 54 unassisted tackles and six tackles-for-loss. He also recorded two interceptions, five pass breakups and three forced fumbles last year. Phillips is slightly undersized and he needs to get stouter against the run but he's willing in run support and he's tall enough to add weight without sacrificing speed. More importantly, he covers a lot of ground in zone coverage and can match up in man coverage making him the most complete safety in this year's class and more than likely a first-round pick. |
Re: Sammy Knight
Well, I think we all like Phillilps, I haven't heard anyone complain about him as a pick. If a trade with Dallas happened, I'd be happy with him at 22 or 28. But he's certainly not worth at 10, and I don't think he'll be on the board in the second round.
As such, unless we trade down, I think the chances of getting him are virtually nil. If I'm right, we'd better hope someone on staff is looking long and hard at replacing Bullocks by a different route. Cap casualties after the draft? |
Re: Sammy Knight
Before the combine, alot of newswriters had us picking up Phillips at 10. I can't remmeber what happened at the Combine to make him slip. I know many times it is the interview that is the killer. Anyone remember why he slipped?
