Vilma Trade and add Robertson
The Saints reportedly gave up a 2008 fourth-round pick and a conditional 2009 pick for Jonathan Vilma.
This makes a lot more sense. The Jets get the 2009 pick if Vilma hits playing time incentives and the Saints re-sign him. If that happened, they have to send back a 2009 fourth-round pick. The deal was originally reported as a conditional 2009 fourth, but the Jets will get a fairer deal Jonathan Vilma Most of the draft post have our 4th going to the Jets this year. So if Vilma signs and plays we will loose a 3rd in 2009 but will get our 4th back. If he does not play that set number of games and does not resign with us we loose nothing else. If he just resigns and does not meet the games played we loose another 4th in 2009. That is how I am reading it. This part is good news. This is a good sign that saints are going to do everything to improve the defense so he will want to stay in NO. Based on that I say go after Roberston and rework the Vilma trade. The Jets want the same kind of deal. A third for both players. thats is 360 points. Say we trade our second (41) worth 490 for both. That leaves us with 130 points to get from them. We get pick 99 in the fourth worth 104 and a 5th rounder in 2009 worth about 34 pts. We get two players that were picked in the first round that do not work for them in a 34 defense and the jets get an addition second to help replace that loss. We can always try to recoup that second by trading down in the first. In order to get a second we would have to move down to the range of picks 17 or lower. The jets can recoup the loss of picks by trading down also. I say take our lumps up front now and get both. Unless Vilma does not want Roberston at DT in front of him. Then this a total waste of time because he is the key player we want. |

Re: Vilma Trade and add Robertson
I'm all for it Hagan. You know I've been crying for Robertson as well as a trade down in threads all over the place.
But thanks for clearing up the Vilma trade details. Still, are you %100 sure on those details, or are you speculating? |

Hagan you are a wizard. And not like a "Harry Potter" wizard, but like Pakowitz's avatar.
Sorry I have a hangover. |

UPDATE
Michael Smith, of ESPN.com, reports the potential trade between the New York Jets and Cincinnati Bengals involving Jets DT Dewayne Robertson is "on life support," according to a source close to the situation. The Jets were expected to receive the Bengals' fourth- and fifth-round draft picks for Robertson, but sources say Cincinnati and Robertson's agent, Hadley Englehard, were unable to agree on contract terms. The deal is currently on hold, but it may be revisited. How does this factor for us now Hagan...? |

Re: Vilma Trade and add Robertson
I think the Saints will pass and one of the top DT will fall to us in the draft. Still, we have some servicable guys on the roster and the sky is not falling. Robertson is vastly overrated and not much better that what we have. I think the Colts and Patriots have shown that championships are won by building through the draft. I don't want to give away any more picks.

T-Rock's Take: Inside the Jets
Vilma's TRUE worth Ok, here's the deal on the Vilma trade. Stay with me because this gets a little twisty. The Jets received a fourth-round pick in the upcoming 2008 draft. That's theirs and they will use it or trade it or whatever they want to do with it in two months. If Darren McFadden is around in the fourth round, he'll be a Jet. Now, if Vilma reaches certain playing time levels AND he winds up signing an extension with the Saints (remember, Vilma didn't renegotiate so he's a free agent after the 08 season), then the Jets will get either a second or a third rounder in 2009 but they would have to sort of pay back the original value of the deal by giving the Saints a fourth-round pick. Follow? So the best case for the Jets is that they wind up with a fourth this year, a second next year, but have to give up a fourth in 2009. It's been a long day. and... T-Rock's Take: Inside the Jets Just a crazy thought Maybe because it's been such a long day, my mind came up with this: The Jets received a fourth-rounder in 2008 for Vilma. If Vilma doesn't sign an extension with the Saints during or after the 2008 season, he becomes a free agent. The Jets could, conceivably, sign him back at no draft-pick cost. Whew, it's getting late. And, to paraphrase Neil Best, I still have to go write a story for the actual newspaper on all of this. You remember the actual newspaper, right? |

Re: Vilma Trade and add Robertson
this actually sounds like a pretty good deal to me although it would suck if he were to spend only one year with us...
can't be any worse than last years 4th round draft pick |

Robertson is completely invisible against the double team, but flashes dominance in 1 on 1 situations. If you watched the Jets/Steelers game this year, the reason we won was because for some reason the Steelers decided they'd only put their center against him 1 on 1. He's a penetrating DT, and did a nice job of it when he had another large body next to him. Was he worth the two 1sts and a 3rd that we traded up to get him? Hellllllllllllll No. But he started from day one, and IMO has the ability to be an impact player in the 4-3. He had a great year when our Dline consisted of him, Jason Ferguson, John Abraham, and Shawn Ellis. That having been said, he wants to get his money... rumor has it he's not thrilled about the word 'restructure', and very few people want to pay the top salary for a DT for, not the top defensive tackle. |

Re: Vilma Trade and add Robertson
Ferguson, Ellis, and Abraham......I only weigh 210 and I woulda had a good year at DT, LOL. But, he is still better than anybody we currently have.
