Which new player will have the biggest impact

who and why?

Re: Which new player will have the biggest impact

ultimately Vilma will, but Gay is going to move our secondary from awful to average, which basically means we'll go 13-3 next season, lol.

I mean, if we had Gramatica over Mare last season we're 9-7 right there. hahah.

Keith Rivers

Cromartie. With him starting, and Gay beating out David, the defense will be greatly improved. Vilma still has to play behind two backup quality DT's, which will minimize his impact.

I took Gay as we don't know how healthy Vilma is going to be. It would be easily Vilma if he's healthy.

Favre retires, Eli gets injured, Romo does Jessica the night before the big game and we're in the SUPERBOWL....

Bobby McCray will see more time on the field than most think, IMO. The rotation and switching positions will happen more than we are use to. He may not have the stats but he will help others with their stats. This is a bigger signing than we think

Orien Harris.

Man you are really sold on Harris as the player to wake up and play up to his abilities aren't you. That would be nice.

I just think Orgeron will kick his butt and bring out the best in him. I saw some of his games while at Miami and think with the "proper motivation" or kick in the butt...he will perform to a higher level than seen to date in the pros.

BTW: I think the same applies to Smith, Grant, Hollis, Young, and Clancy! Orgeron will get after them. In the final analysis of 2007...the Saints did not get enough push from the ends. Both were overweight (IMHO) and they will not enter 2008 that heavy and the Saints were trying to mask the problems at MLB/WILL.

I have to agree with Hagan on this. I think this is going to be the single best move so for this FA. PASS RUSH, if he can get any going, just a little pressure it'll make the secondary look much better!

They won't have to cover to long and cause QB's to rush there passes creating turnovers and bad passes... HELLO McCray

I agree as well, though I'd have to put the Vilma move in front of it. I'm sure we'll see situations where all three of them are on the field at the same time - Smith, Grant, and McCray. This is going to be good to see.

If we can improve at Dt i say Vilma easily will make the biggest impact, if we dont then I say McRay as I think Gay will play more nickel package(I hope I am wrong)

i'll vote Gay, altho several believe he won't amount to much..

Re: Which new player will have the biggest impact

Gay will be a great addition. He was more than a nickel in NE. He was part of an active rotation that got him on the field more than the average nickel back. Would I set him out on an Island by himself for the entire game? maybe not. But as a number 2 in place off M&M you bet.

Re: Which new player will have the biggest impact

Jonathon Vilma....hands down. While Gay will be an upgrade compared to Jason David, what exactly does that say? Hell....my sister would be an upgrade to Jason David. I do think McCray will be more of a contributor than most people think. If for anything, he'll help Smith & Grant get a breather. I'd still like to see us make a deal for DeAngelo Hall or Lito Sheppard. I think that I would sleep better at night knowing we had a legitimate #1 CB roaming the field on Sundays. Still..... Usama Young is looking better every day. I think he makes a better #2 CB than what we put on the field last year. Hopefully Payton is paying attention. Last, but not least....we need a safety!!!! Harper has played fairly well, but the rest are atrocious!!!!!!

Hear hear! If and when we upgrade FS, then I'll vote for that as the one position to make the most impact.

This is a no brainer.....McCray without a doubt!! He will get after the QB on a regular basis and the secondary instantly becomes good. Other teams converting on 3rd down will soon be a thing of the past people. Bank on it!

Vilma b/c ESPN insider headlines say so. Only I'm to cheap to pay for insider so I don't know what they are saying. Can anyone who ain't cheap post the story so I can validate my support for Vilma?

Re: Which new player will have the biggest impact

all i seen on espn

VilmaJonathan Vilma, MLB, New Orleans Saints
If healthy, Vilma is exactly what the Saints need. He is ultra-competitive, tenacious and a natural leader on the field. He has great range and is a playmaker with some of the aggressive traits that have served his fellow Miami alums so well in the NFL. New Orleans did not have a defensive identity or a leader who made everyone accountable last season, but it does now with Vilma. The Saints would be wise to add another big body at defensive tackle to help protect the undersized middle linebacker, and it is still unclear how well the 25-year-old has recovered from a knee injury, but this is the type of move that can quickly turn around a defense. New Orleans has a good chance to win the NFC South next year, and Vilma is a major reason why. The Saints got better in a hurry on defense, and without pressing needs on offense they are in a position to further bolster that unit on draft day.

If he can start opening day. But I am doubting it. Morgan is our insurance policy if Vilma can not go

That is scary. So....our insurance policy for Vilma is a guy that's missed nearly half the games in his career because he's had more concussions than a crash test dummy? I think Vilma will be ready to go. Hell....I hope he'll be ready to go. I've always liked Vilma. He's got heart & good work ethic. Of course....supposedly, so does Morgan. He's just...uhmmm...brittle.

Vilma will be comeback player of the year since Brees should of been in 06'.. Pennington sucks. This would be great payback. Not that anyone cares about meaningless awards.. ha.

Talbid is the FS in round 1, IMO. Then Carlson followed by Phillips. This year draft is loaded with tweeners.

I've heard others talking about moving Talbid over, saying he'd be a good fit at FS. But I haven't watched any of his play myself, and so I can't say. I trust your read on it though.

Realistically, do you think we have a good chance of trading down? Personally, I think we're in perfect position. I know teams sometimes shy away from the top 10 picks, because of the risk associated with such costly contracts, and the massive hits to salary caps. But I think at about 10, things start to be come more manageable, teams become more willing, so we might be able to pull this trade off.

So I'm thinking -
1) trade down in the first round towards the bottom, and use that pick to get Phillips. KK stays as a backup, but Bullocks gets put on the trading block.
2) use the additional pick to get a replacement for Shanle.

Doing so would solve the two worst problems on the team (IMO), but still leave us with 2nd and 3rd rounders to draft best available talent.

Fantasy land?

pakowitz 03-07-2008 11:56 AM

Re: Which new player will have the biggest impact

LOE, i think we are in a good position to trade back but only if one of the big prospects falls... after the 5 ot 6 top guys, then i feel that the next 10 or 15 guys are around the same value area and that might not stir alot of interest from teams to trade up...

i dont see any corner really sticking out to be that superstar.. i know alot of people will say DRC but he hasnt played against provent talent...

there arent to many 1st round LB prospects and safety is a weak class with possibly no 1st rounders this year

WR is deep this year but with no real superstars, mostly 2nd option receivers

Oline? i can only name 2 guys who have even been mentioned to go in the top 10..

what im sayin is that i dont see many teams wanting to trade up to get a player who hasnt even been projected as being a top 10 pick...

Vilma is the this years' defensive version of Drew Brees when we picked him up at the time. The Saints must have some good inside medical information to be able to CONFIDENTLY pick up these guys who others leave for dead and then making superstars out of them.

Re: Which new player will have the biggest impact

Round 1Trading up
Chicago
Minnesota
Philli
Dallas
Now here is an interesting thing
San Diego trading down in the first or completely out of the first because they traded away their number 2 last year. Cap is not really that good for them either.
Now if we trade down with Minnesota or lower a second will be involved. That gives us two seconds and we could trade the two picks and move back into the lower part of the first. MAYBE just a thought the contract money would work out the same for the most part

As for talbit to FS I have to say it would be a good move because of his good, not great, speed and the fact he is a ball hawk. Now as for run defense his tackles are good and he has blitzed a lot. So it does not seem like a stretch for him.

Agree with this.

He will push our lazy DL to do better. I hope the new DL coach gets them in shape.
