something to consider
I think we can all say that the Saints NEED a true number 1 CB that this team has lacked for so long. Given the way the Saints play man to man 90% of the time, McKenzie being iffy for the season, and the Saints roster consisting of a bunch of middle of the road nickle corners, something came to mind.
Now hear me out before you skip through this...assuming the Hall trade goes through, could you imagine the Saints trading Jammal Brown for Nnamdi Asomugha? The Raiders cant pay all those guys in the secondary. Jammal Brown fits a huge need for them. We have some young tackles who may be ready to see the field. Our biggest need would be filled, and so would Oakland's. We wouldnt lose any draft picks and we could take Rivers in the first, DT in the 2nd, and a young OT in the third to group with Stinch, Strief and Bushrod. Or we could take Clady at 10 and fill holes throughout the rest of the draft. I think the move would make sense, thats not to say its likely, but i wonder if that is even something being considered by the FO. What do you guys think? |
Re: something to consider
I would feel sorry for Brees and our offense would take a big hit. Our season is contingent on Brees' health and this would not bode well for the outlook of our season. Surround with him rookies and inexperienced players protecting his blindside would be disastrous. Yes Nnamdi would upgrade our secondary, but it won't make much difference if we can't score any points nor generate a pass rush. I'll keep a franchise tackle over a Pro Bowl corner any day of the week... absolutely an easy decision.

Re: something to consider
Last year Brown didn't impress me as much as he did in 06. Mind you he didn't play bad but on some key situations his man beat him. The big one that still hurts is the Tampa game. Again he is a good player but I do think he is replaceable so I wouldn't have a problem with this scenerio.

Re: something to consider
Brown has not impressed me since moving to LT. I think Zach "Man Mountain" Strief has performed better at LT in the games he replaced Brown. Anybody else remember Strief mistreating Julius Peppers in relief of an injured Jamaal Brown? Peppers never saw the backfield & he's an elite DE. I'd love this scenario. We would have to pick up a OT in the draft, though. Our reserves at the position would be far from dependable with Strief becoming a starter.
Papz....no offense, but I don't consider Brown a franchise LT. He was a Pro Bowl caliber RT, but he gets beat alot at LT. |
Re: something to consider
Okay maybe I shouldn't label him as a "franchise LT" as he's not as good as the Odgen's and Pace's of the league. But, he did make it to the ProBowl as a left tackle if I'm not mistaken. So I'll re-phrase my original statement...
I'll keep a ProBowl LT over and ProBowl CB any day of the week. Seriously would anyone be as comfortable with Strief at LT than JB? I know I certainly wouldn't. Too much depends on it. All we have are small sample sizes for Strief and not much else of any other of our OL. If Strief is as good as some say, wouldn't you think he'd be starting over Stinchcomb? |

Goodwin outperformed Faine and yet Faine remained the starter, our coaching staff seems to be reluctant to make switches once the season has opened. So no, I do not think or coaching staff would start him over Stinchcomb. |
Re: something to consider
That's debateable though we've debated that subject 6 feet under already.

Re: something to consider
Wasn't meant to offend Papz.....Strief has performed better in the game's he's started at LT than Brown. I think Brown is a great RT, but he's either getting beat or making bone head penalties at LT. Like others have said....this coaching staff is very reluctant to change after the season starts. Case in point #1: Why was Bullocks starting until damn near mid-season? Case #2: Why did Pierre Thomas not get his shot until the end of the season? We can debate this all day, but I'll still say Brown is an over-rated LT & if we can get a shut down CB for him......pull the trigger on the deal!!!!!!!! There's a guy on the bench who can fill Brown's shoes (better in my opinion). Who's gonna' stop the pass that's been killing us? Gay? David? Thomas? I'd rather get someone who can handle their own in man to man. The guys we have at CB get beat like a pinata on Cinqo De Mayo!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Re: something to consider
None was taken gandhi1007. We have a difference in opinion... nothing wrong with that.

Re: something to consider
i'd rather trade bush.................

Re: something to consider
actually, if they trade their 4 spot, i may consider..........

Re: something to consider
ARE you *&^%$^)*&*^$#$ NUTS Drew Brees is the heart and soul of this team.
You do not trade his main protector, especially a Pro Bowl player like J.Brown.Ashmoungha is good but he is not worth J.Brown no way . Teams build there offense around LTs |
Re: something to consider
OK I have been thinking about it. Is there something you are trying to say? Browns knees not all that good? Are the backups ready to step up?
Now a straight up trade for Brown leaves me a little uneasy without answers to these questions. He is not a LT. But he is without a doubt a great RT. How about Stinch instead and a lower pick? Then if Brown is to go because of any of the questions above are answered with a yes, then get picks for him.We should come out ahead of the game that way. |
Re: something to consider
I'm sorry....I just can't help but remember DeMarcus Ware using Brown every single play. Or....then there's Julius Peppers man-handling him. I understand these are upper echelon DE's I've named, but your "ALL-PRO" LT (as some of you have called Brown) should be able to at least hold his own against them on a few plays. Right? He didn't. He got used like a $2 hooker for an entire ball game... damn near every time we played them. He's led the offensive line in penalties for a few years as well (most in crucial situations). Tell me again what makes Brown so good at LT?

Re: something to consider
I agree that Goodwin, when he was filling in for Faine, out perforned him. That's why he's now a buc. We need a CB , no doubt, but taking any chance on protecting Drew is not worth it.

Re: something to consider
Im gonna have to go with papz and triman on this one. This team lives and dies with drew. You take away from his protection and hes gonna be rushed and thatll just cause more INTs and those INTs were the differences in many games we shouldve won last year.
plus i dont see the point of messing with our Oline unless its necessary, theyve been pretty damn solid the last two years. |
