Murphy's Law/ O' Mally's Law
As I thought about the reactions of some memebers on this board about the preseason loss to the Eagles. I realized something that I knew a long time ago.
What I realized is that because the Saints have let the fans down so many times over the years that when something bad happens, it is a natural reaction for fans to think that the Saints are once again going to disappoint. I think most Saints fans live by "Murphy's Law"- (Anything that can go wrong will). Then there are those that live by "O' Mally's Law"- (Murphy was an optimist). Basically you have one type of fan that when something goes wrong, he searches for the answer in the players, coaching staff, front office, and truely beleives he is right. AND THEY MIGHT BE. Then there are fans that are more patient and beleives that given enough time that everything is going to work out. They go into every year beleiving this is the year. AND THEY MIGHT BE RIGHT. The great thing about this board is that everybody has an opinion. Some good. Some bad. But none the less, if your not careful, you just might learn something. The point is, there is nothing wrong with questioning anything. There is also nothing wrong with beleiveing this is year to do it. As the year goes on and the Saints win some games there will be those ready to claim that that we are superbowl bound. Some of the same members that are doomsayers will even jump on the ship. Conversly, when the Saints lose some games there will be those who say we are doomed. Some of the same members that think we're headed to the superbowl will jump ship and go with the doomsayers. Just for the record: Unitl we are eliminated from the playoffs, I will be expecting to go to the Super Bowl. GO SAINTS-ALL THE WAY TO THE SUPER BOWL!! |

Murphy's Law/ O' Mally's Law
Wouldn\'t it be nice if it was that simple .
No , somehow I think there is more to it . Sometimes for the greater good of the team it is necessary to amputate , Yes remove that dead weight that is holding a talented team back . What shall be referred to as from this point on as Grudenism . Yes, sports fans to much dismay a few years ago the Tampa Bay Buccaneers had such a problem . They had a coach called Tony Dungy , revered by most as a great coach who lead the Bucs to many play off appearances . But there was always an excuse and never a ring , much like Haslett . The ownership of the Bucs made a decision , amputate . Yes sports fans , the dead weight was removed and the new coach John Gruden , took those Bucs to the promised land . The story could be told a little differently for coach Callahan with the Raiders , but the result was a trip to the promised land in 1 year . Over the past 5 superbowls you will see an alarming fact . Following amuputation of an ineffective coach the majority of the coaches that have been in the Superbowl have gone in under 3 years . So you see sports fans it is alright to question a coach going into his 4th season , they did it in Tampa and won the Superbowl . So you see Grudenism can be a good thing ..... Murphy's Law/ O' Mally's Law
Am I misunderstanding what I am reading here? Are you saying that Haz should be replaced? Do you not agree that HE created this team as we have now? He is the guy who built this explosive offense in three years. What exactly did Ditka do that benefitted the Saints? Mora was the only other head coach that I think created anything positive for this team but he lost his desire towards the end of his tenure and quit. Haz is still in there fighting and has a strong desire. There is no quit in Haz at least not yet. We do have some areas to improve on and we will. But to allow Haz build a team and then bring in someone else to go to the dance with is just plain wrong. Dungy built that team in Tampa over years and Gruden just came in a took them to the superbowl. That\'s basically what happened in Dallas when Jimmy Johnson left and Switzer came in. Switzer also went to the superbowl in his first year, with Johnson\'s team, then what happened??? Dallas has sucked ever since!!!! Watch Tampa for the next couple of years and we shall see. Gruden is a much better coach than Switzer was but the point is he didn\'t build that team...Dungy did.

I agree that the reaction to the pre-season game was harsh and sometimes not justified, because it really doesn\'t mean a thing and the Saints did what needed to be done - evaluate players, even when the first team was on the field. But noone has changed their predictions so far. |

I agree. Oakland got rid of Gruden after he failed to take them to the superbowl and they go the following year. :casstet: |

I do think that it is premature to be calling for coaches to be fired or replaced though. And by fans doing that very thing, I would think that is living by \"Murphy\'s Law\" I have no wild illusions that the Saints are going to go 16-0 this year, but I think we are capiable of beating any team on the schedule this year. I also think we are capiable of losing to any team on the schedule this year. I just prefer to be optimistic. The fact is that no one knows how the team is going to do this year and you can look at this and that to try to justify the way you feel, but the truth is no one knows. Given the FACT that no one knows how that Saints are going to do this year, you can be positive, or negitive, or neutral. I\'LL BE POSITIVE BUT NOT BLIND. [Edited on 14/8/2003 by BillyCarpenter1] |

Murphy's Law/ O' Mally's Law
Ok, how about this...the current owner, who I don\'t believe knows squat about football, sells the team to Archie and a group of investors. They bring in the right group of coaches, we win the Superbowl in New Orleans and we all live happily ever after? How about a beer? Oh...wait a minute, I think I\'ve already been drinking to come up with that scenario....maybe I need to get on the wagon.....no wait..that happens at the end of the season...aw hell...it\'s preseason....better start looking for that AA number.......
