Matt Jones Likely Done in Jacksonville
Report: Matt Jones Likely Done in Jacksonville
Posted Mar 22nd 2008 4:33PM by Michael David Smith Filed under: Jaguars, NFL Draft When the Jacksonville Jaguars drafted Matt Jones out of Arkansas in 2005, the hope was that he would take a few years to learn to play receiver -- he had, after all, played quarterback in college -- but that he would eventually become one of the league's elite receivers. Instead, it has been just the opposite -- Jones actually looks like a player who hasn't improved at all since he first arrived. And now Pro Football Weekly is reporting that Jones is likely done in Jacksonville: WR Matt Jones can all but kiss Jacksonville goodbye. That's what one team insider told us regarding the hugely disappointing 2005 first-rounder. The insider said the Jags will likely keep him around for training camp but that he would have to have a lights-out showing in camp to stick on the roster. The offseason acquisitions of Jerry Porter and Troy Williamson have lessened the Jags' need at receiver. The worst position to be in as an NFL player is to be on a team that plans to cut you at the end of training camp -- the same position the Jaguars had Byron Leftwich in last year. Jones is a good enough athlete that some team would offer him a job if he were cut right now, but if he gets cut at the end of August or the beginning of September, he may find that there are few, if any, takers for his services. I still would love to see the saints keep this kid on the radar. I think Sean could do something with him. |
Re: Matt Jones Likely Done in Jacksonville
I wrote about this when this came out somewhere, and I've heard mixed opinions about him. I think he'd be a solid addition to our WR corps. His size and athletic ability is worth bringing him in.

Re: Matt Jones Likely Done in Jacksonville
I like this idea. From what I have heard is that Del Rio and Garrard are not Matt Jones fans becasue he was a Leftwich supporter, and he should have been. Leftwich used him more. If you go back and look at the numbers he did better when Leftwich was the QB. I think this kid is still young, and has plenty of potential. Brees would love a big target like Matt Jones, plus with his experience at QB Payton could have more opportunities to throw in some trick plays. I see it being a perfect fit if we can work it out. He'll most likely get cut eventually, but I wouldn't be against trading a 6th or 7th rounder for him, or maybe even Devery. We know Dev can't catch; why not give someone else a chance. As bad as Devery is I still think he's better than Troy Williamson, who the Jags traded for earlier this offseason.

Who?
MATT JONES WHO MATT JONES WHO MATT JONES oops sorry got confused with the Rapper Mike Jones. I don't have a problem bringing him to camp but it would be under the "Where and What ever you want to do in order to make the team" umbrella (wait thats another artist). |
Re: Matt Jones Likely Done in Jacksonville
I'd take him in a heartbeat, I believe his potential is almost unlimited but that he needs to get coaching and mor ethan anything needs to be trusted.

Good coaching could help this guy. I'd take a shot.

Re: Matt Jones Likely Done in Jacksonville
My thinking is bring him in for a cup of coffee if he is available for free. I would not pony a draft pick or another player for him. I know the guy has talent, but he has pretty much regressed so far. Anyway it would not be a bad idea to bring him in, if he is able to earn a roster spot then great! However right now I do not see him beating out any of the top 6 to earn his spot. Maybe like Skyler Green, he could be some decent injury insurance.

.. when you are a receiver, is kind of hard to shine if they don't throw you the ball. Matt Jones is as fast as Devery, taller, and has better hands... he needs to be in an offense where he gets the ball, and not in an offense where the QB doesn't like him because Jones was a "Leftwich guy". |
