Raiders cap just keeps blowing up
RAIDERS REEL IN ANOTHER
Posted by Mike Florio on March 28, 2008, 7:32 a.m. The Oakland Raiders have continued their effort to upgrade the talent on the roster via the expenditure of enormous amounts of money by signing free-agent defensive end Kalimba Edwards. The deal, per Adam Schefter of NFL Network, is for two years and pays $5 million. Edwards was released on March 13 by the Detroit Lions. He visited the Titans a few days later, but otherwise generated not much interest. A second-round draft pick in 2002, Edwards spent six seasons with the Lions, appearing in 87 games and starting 22. He has 26 career sacks. I am think that with cap so out of control in Oakland there has to come a day soon when they will make a move to pop the balloon. They still gotta sign their draft picks. Nnamdi Asomugha is still kicking me in the head and wont go away. How about a RB from the stable? Bush, Fargas, Jordan They are going to have to make a big move or two or three. |

Re: Raiders cap just keeps blowing up
How far over the cap are they now? Double it?
And didn't Jamarcus Russell just get some sick roster bonus, like 20 mil, something like that? Perphaps these guys aren't planning on singning ANY draft picks. Maybe they'll just trade them all away, say for future picks. What are these guys thinking.... |

Re: Raiders cap just keeps blowing up
I think its part of their big picture. They know they have had some serious problems and they won't be fixed over night so in order to so something to keep the ship from sinking futher... go after players and give them every penny to play for them. Instead of good teams having to nickeal and dime a decent or good player to come play for them Oakland says "to hell with that how much you want, here ya go"? Not a bad stradegy but one that may bite them in the long run as well if they don't have a plan on the back end in a couple of years.
Its a hell of a lot easy to get a good player to play for you when you are a step away from winning it all. |

I think they are going to have to move Fabian Washington, with the addition of D. Hall he is probably going to request a trade and he may do well in the market right now - i bet the saints would be interested if the wanted to move him

Re: Raiders cap just keeps blowing up
Al Davis is an old man, he has no reason to care about the future. He knows that ship needs to be righted more sooner than later. Hell, he can't take that money with him when it's over for him, so why not spend it like a mad man and try to get a championship team within a couple years? For a team as bad as they are, they are sure collecting some very nice talent. Screw the salary cap, just back load the contracts and give big bonuses. Sure, in a few years they will have to strip the team and start over, but for Al Davis he knows it needs to get done now.

Re: Raiders cap just keeps blowing up
On another front, I asked around to find out what the Raiders' cap figure is right now. Remember, when the D-Hall trade went down, I guessed the team might have a problem finding some money for CB Nnamdi Asomugha, whom the Giants like very much. Well, I got it for you. As of today, Oakland has roughly a whopping...
...half a mil under the cap. Now, that figure is the top 51 on their current roster and they'll be able to shave some of that (perhaps by cutting RB LaMont Jordan), but it doesn't include the money they'll have to pay their rookies (Darren McFadden maybe?). Plus, you need more than $500k to operate during the season. Does this mean the Giants will trade for Asomugha? No more than the Saints trading for Shockey right now. But it's definitely a situation that bears watching. Now add Kalimba Edwards two years and pays $5 million or 2.5/yr CB Nnamdi Asomugha has not signed yet at $9.8 million, could increase as of April 25 Ball park 11 to 12 million over if all sign prior to the draft. Now there is a rule in the NFL about teams having to meet the cap by a set date. Add The Raiders signed Erik Meyer and Jeff Otis in moves that doubled the number of quarterbacks on their roster. 3/28 The Raiders re-signed five "exclusive rights" free agents: linebacker Ricky Brown, long snapper Jon Condo, tight end John Madsen, wide receiver Chris McFoy and tackle Mark Wilson. These players have two years or less accrued time in the NFL and could sign only with the Raiders unless they weren't offered a contract. In other news, the Raiders re-signed linebacker Jon Alston Get the picture. |

Re: Raiders cap just keeps blowing up
My line of thought is - what does this do for us. They're going to cut some people, obviously, a lot of people. They have no choice.

Re: Raiders cap just keeps blowing up
The dollar amount is way too much for it to be a bunch of low cost back ups. having the #3 defense in the NFL last year I was hoping maybe they will cut loose a good defensive player or two, and a RB from there stable.
