Is Mayo a possibility?
Mel Kiper actually has Jerod Mayo ranked 13th overall and Keith Rivers 17th overall on his top 25 board. Is there any chance the Saints go with Mayo over Rivers if both top CB's and Ellis are off the board?

Re: Is Mayo a possibility?
Mayo would be interesting... he's a first rounder no doubt. As far as 10, hmm... people will certainly second guess the pick that's for sure. But if he works out, it'll certainly quiet the critics. I like Mayo and if our staff felt as if he'd be the right pick for us, I have no problem with it. Get the highest rated player on their board... not the media's.
I remember the Pats selecting Logan Mankins that other year... people called him an absolute reach. I'm sure they can't say the same anymore. The same can be said when the Bills reached for Donte Whitner. |

Re: Is Mayo a possibility?
There is some things I like about this guy but at #10??? Over Rivers??? I think I would take Rivers over Mayo. Rivers is a legit talent and every bit in the top 20. Mayo, I think there is still some question marks and for him all of a sudden to be riding up the boards really make me want to question that. I think he has upside but I don't know if I want to draft for UPSIDE at 10.
Anything can happend though. |
Re: Is Mayo a possibility?
I want to see how fast Rivers is.
He doesn't really have any numbers out right now from the combine. He didn't really put up great numbers last season. He was surrounded by great players as well. I'm not saying he's bad or anything, but I want to see something that puts him over the top. And my opinion really doesn't matter, so maybe I shouldn't say things like, "I want to see." I just hope whoever we pick at #10 starts. |

My point was I have no problem "reaching"... if a team likes a certain player a lot, get him and screw what the media thinks. It's not always going to work out but with any draft pick, nothing is guaranteed. |

He's still second round material. NO WAY do the Saints think of him in the first round.. so HOLD THE MAYO.

i think he goes in the first due to the fact that this is a weak LB class... teams have needs and alot of them will reach on a player to fill their needs.. i think he goes in the 20-25 range.. |
Re: Is Mayo a possibility?
Keith Rivers, USC, 6022, 241, 4.60
Rivers has impressed scouts at the Senior Bowl because of his playing speed and the mean streak he has displayed. I don't always see the hype about Rivers but he is a really solid linebacker. Rivers will likely be the first linebacker taken, but he is not an elite athletic talent like that of A.J. Hawk, Lawrence Timmons, or Patrick Willis. He is a consistent player and will contribute immediately. Jerod Mayo, Tennessee, 6013, 242, 4.54 He may do better with a return to WLB in a 4-3 scheme where he can utilize his athleticism and ability to read and react. Mayo also has some injury history, having missed the final 4 games of 2005 with a knee injury and then playing through a knee injury at the end of 2006. there you go. 1 inch and .06 in the 40. now the more I watch this guy the better I like him Quentin Groves, Auburn, 6030, 254, 4.57, (DE/OLB) Many scouts project Groves as a linebacker in the NFL, with him likely better suited for a 3-4 scheme. He is a truly instinctive player, showing a great understanding of the game from both positions. As an OLB, he is able to rush the QB, stop the run, and play in space to disrupt the passing game underneath. He has the speed and quickness to cover most backs and tight ends with a surprisingly smooth backpedal and loose hips. He could become a 4-3 DE in much the same mold as Osi Umenyiora or a 3-4 OLB more like DeMarcus Ware. Trade back to middle of the first and reach on this kid. I would be very happy. We could take the pick in 2009 to make up for the lost pick in the Vilma trade |
Re: Is Mayo a possibility?
Well I have to retract my previous comment. I see Mayo has really been climbing most experts mock drafts.. It does help his stock the class is so weak, so he may very well go in the middle first round to late.

I will keep preaching Mayo if I can. Trade back and get Mayo in my opinion.(If Dorsey or Ellis aren't there) Mayo had over 200 tackles in last two years. He's played both MLB and WLB. Measurables are about the same for Mayo and Rivers, so look at stats and there is no comparison. Oh and Do we really have to put "if Dorsey or Ellis aren't there" anymore. It's pretty much a given. |
