Welcome to The Show! On Thursday, ESPN Insider KC Joyner will be here to answer your NFL questions.
Joyner, aka The Football Scientist, uses game film to track, tabulate and analyze nearly every measurable statistic in an NFL game. He is a regular Insider contributor and has his own website at thefootballscientist.com. Send your questions now and join KC in The Show on Thursday at 4 p.m. ET! Joyner Archive: Columns | Chats KC Joyner: Hello all! Let's talk some football! -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- don buffalo: Did Nate Clements live up to expecations last year? KC Joyner: He didn't live up to $80 million expectations, that's for sure. He had a 7.9 YPA and teams threw around 100 passes at him. Neither of those are close to shutdown numbers. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Landon(Boulder): What are your thoughts on the Jared Allen trade? I think MN now has the best DL and OL in the league. Tavaris should be much better in his second full season and the Vikes are going to be tough to beat in the NFC. KC Joyner: I know this may sound crazy but Minnesota could now be a darkhorse NFC title candidate if Jackson keeps progressing. Berrian should solve some of their offensive woes (though he isn't as good as is generally said) and Allen gives them an instant pass rush. The NFC North should be down a bit with Favre leaving GB so the Vikes could be on the inside track to that division title. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Zac (MN): Hey KC, what did you think of the Jared Allen trade? Fair, one sided? what do Allen's metrics say? KC Joyner: Allen's metrics say he is the most dominant pass rusher in the NFL. He split his one on one sacks almost evenly between speed moves and power moves and that's rare to have a player do that. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Zac (Bay Area): Why would the Raiders take Gholston over Howie Jr? The reports on Gholston say he takes plays off, losses focus. This is exactly what they do not need. They have had a roster full of these type of players. Even though Howie Jr might not be as gifted an athlete, his report says he has a motor that does not stop. Give me the guy who does not have a sense of entitlement and will bust his butt any day over some freak athlete who looks as if he doesn't care half the time. KC Joyner: The only reason I could think of is upside. If Gholston's issue is maturity and the Raiders help him get that, then he's the better long term pick. I don't think that much talent separates the two, however, so I'd agree with you that taking Jr. is the higher percentage play. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Scott (Reno): Which trade do your metrics say will have a bigger impact? Pacman or Allen? KC Joyner: Allen. When Pacman is on, he's a dominant CB (he had a YPA in the five yard range a couple of seasons ago) but he's replacing Jacques Reeves. Reeves had a 7.9 YPA last year, which isn't bad, so Pacman may only help them cut that by a yard or two. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Pete (Austin, TX): Would Lito be a good fit in New Orleans, assuming they can work something out? KC Joyner: As much as NO needs secondary help, it's not like Lito would be a big upgrade. He had an 8.1 YPA last year and only two picks. I don't see how he helps enough to justify a big payout in a trade. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Luis (SB, CA): KC, isn't it nuts how nobody is talking about a certain 2005 MVP who was just released? Do you think he still has value to a team? KC Joyner: Great point, Luis! The issue with Alexander last year was largely due to the Seahawks O line. I did a metric review on them last season and they had horrible blocking success percentages pretty much across the board. No one was going to get much behind them. Alexander still has some gas left in the tank. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- J (Milwaukee): Did Lee Evans not qualify for your deep ball metrics, or was he just not as effective this year? KC Joyner: He had 54 vertical passes thrown his way, so he did qualify. His 11.3 YPA on those passes was pretty good but just wasn't as dominant as it had been in years past. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Jeff (B-More): Who is a better bet for QB for the Ravens, Troy Smith, Kyle Boller, or Matt Ryan? KC Joyner: If it's my pick, I go Ryan. I think Ryan has the potential to be another Matt Hasselbeck. That's a Super Bowl caliber QB and as good as Smith might be, I don't know that he has that upside. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Travis(WI): In about 3 of your articles you mentioned being surprised that Roddy White was such a good WR. Isn't it possible that he is a pro-bowl caliber WR who was always held back by an unconventional(to put it nicely) QB? KC Joyner: Travis, White is definitely a Pro Bowl caliber WR. Last year's QBing for Atlanta wasn't unconventional; it was just plain bad. Give White a good QB for a year and he's Hawaii bound in February. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Kelvin (Dayton): Do you believe the Bengals were wrong to refuse the trade with Washington? It sounds as if that was a generous offer all things considered (unless they expect to get more). KC Joyner: I don't have any inside skinny on this but I'm betting they aren't going to play this like their backs are up against the wall. If they get a home run deal, great, but if they don't, I think they are willing to tell Johnson that he's a Bengal and he's got to deal with that. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Jake (SF): I hate drafting on "upside." How many players actually reach their so called upside? It is always better to take the player who can play now than one who MIGHT be special one day IF he reaches his potential. why do teams fall into this trap all the time? KC Joyner: Because the draft is all about physical talent. Teams will convince themselves they can solve problems that the college coaching staffs couldn't. It's a low percentage play but when they see a guy who can do things very few others can, they get blinders on. Plus they don't want to see the guy do well elsewhere and have to explain to ownership why they passed up on him. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- don buffalo: Jake. Antonio Cromartie...classic example. First one that came to mind. KC Joyner: Good example, Don! -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Joe (Detroit): What do you think the Lions need to do in the draft? Mayo and Rice sound pretty good to me. KC Joyner: That sounds like some kind of ingredient mix for a meal! Seriously, though, I can't see them going anywhere else but defense. They need D line help more than LB in my view, so I'd be surprised if they don't take the best D lineman on the board. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Chris (Seattle): Sorry KC, Alexander was running on Fumes all last year. He's done, he's slow, soft and injury prone. KC Joyner: I wouldn't go that far Chris, but I will point out that even in Alexander's best years the Hawks O line wasn't very good metric wise. He was always able to put up numbers without much blocking and that he couldn't do so last year is an indicator he could be on the downside. I still think in the right situation he has the ability to be a very good featured back, though. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- George (NY): KC: Chances the Jets land Chris Long either with pick #6 or by trading up? Also, Gholston, Ryan or McFadden in the likely event C. Long is not there? KC Joyner: I don't think Long will be there but I'd bet McFadden is there unless another trade is made in front of the Jets pick. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Jake (SF): Don, that's one, and I am sure there are others. I could list hundreds, probably just from the Raiders, who have not lived up to it. I'm not saying Gholston will be a bad pick, but he has a lot of Mamula in him.... KC Joyner: Jake's retort. I'd don't quite see Mamula in Gholston, as Mamula just didn't have good football skills, but I do see the potential for a Shaun Rogers. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Nick (Portland): S. Alexander to Denver? KC Joyner: Maybe, but Denver gets production out of just about anyone so they won't pay top dollar for Shaun. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Randy (Wyoming(: Do you see the Broncos taking a skill player in the first round Mendahall, Stewart, or Kelly? Or is it an O-line all the way? KC Joyner: I'd bet O line all the way, although it should be pointed out that McShay says Denver might go with an RB. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Ed (fond du lac, WI): If the Packers draft a CB, how long until Harris is supplanted as a starter? Is there a late 1st round CB that you like to fit in their system? KC Joyner: Ed, all coaches hate starting rookies, especially rookie CBs, but if Harris puts up another 9.7 YPA season like he did last year, they might end up having no choice but to play a youngster. Harris needs to go back to focusing on coverage instead of focusing on trying to make the big play. He was a 6 YPA guy in 2006 when he did that and that's what GB needs him to get back to. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Randy (Wyoming): I've also heard the Broncos taking Mayo at 12! Would that be a reach? KC Joyner: Given where the mocks have Mayo going, yes it would be a reach. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Mike (az): KC, How bout some cardinal talk. Everyone knows they need help in the secondary but do your metrics suggest its a lack of pass rush or simply a lack of talent in the secondary. I believe having Antrel Rolle now at FS will be a major upgrade (i predict real real big things for him this year!) but they still are very thin at CB. Whats your take, which one of the top CB's fits Clancy's system the best ( please dont say talib, that guy has terrible form!) KC Joyner: I like Jenkins as the best fit but he's not likely to be there. It'll have to be McKelvin or Cromartie-Rodgers. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Cindy ( Charlotte): Can John Fox and Company afford to draft Matt Ryan? How would he help the team win now and take Fox off the hot seat? Wouldn't Otah make more sense for them, shore up the O-Line? KC Joyner: They need to win now and as good as Ryan's long-term upside is, he's very unpolished and is not ready to make an impact today. They'll go O or D line all the way. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Ed (fond du lac, WI): News flash: Favre to announce tonight on Letterman that he's on the cover of Madden 09 next year. That means he's either going to break the jinx, or come back and get injured - but either way, looks like Favre isn't playing next year! (sadly) KC Joyner: Not sure if this is true but if it is, I don't quite get it. I understand that Favre is the best known player in the NFL but how does putting a retired guy on the cover help a game? Is it to tell Packers fans they can still act as if Favre is still around? Why not put Eli on there instead? -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Mikey(Lackawanna,NY): KC, I have a feeling the Buffalo Bills will select a CB like Dominique Rodgers-Cromartie with the 11th overall pick? Than trade back up into the late 1st or early 2nd rd(Like they have 3 out of the last 4 yrs) and draft a WR like a Limas Sweed, Malcolm Kelly, James Hardy, or Jordy Nelson? KC Joyner: I could see that happening. The good news from both the Bills and the Cards perspectives is that even though there aren't any "elite" 1st round level CBs in this draft, there are still plenty of talented CBs out there. I could see as many as 6 CBs going in round 1. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Majeed: KC, Can Miami trade JT to Philly or jax for their #1? KC Joyner: That's an interesting thought. I could see Jax more than Philly in that the Jags are but one or two players away from really making a Super Bowl run. Philly is a bit further off and they don't tend to build around one year plans either. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Chase (brewtown): Hey KC, what do you think of the packers trading a third or a second round pick for jason taylor? And what about packaging one of those second round picks with their first rounder to move up and grab the human battering ram Mendenhall? Both of these players could help the packers make the next step to the superbowl, couldnt they? KC Joyner: Chase, I see GB being a lot like Philly. They build around youth. If Favre were still there they could make the case for making a Super Bowl run and taking the chance on trading for a vet but with Rodgers there it ain't gonna happen. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Anthony (NYC): KC were Antrell Rolle's metrics that bad as a CB that the Cards had to move him over to safety? KC Joyner: Absolutely yes. A 10.3 YPA is a definite sign a CB needs to be moved/replaced. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Eric (Long Island, NY): KC my friend thinks Mike Jenkins the CB from South Florida is a future star. If he is there at 11 do you think the Bills should take him over any of the wr's? KC Joyner: Jenkins is that good but with the way the Buffalo secondary played last year (which is to say pretty well), they might be better suited to take a WR. Having said that, guys like Jenkins don't come along every day and there aren't any dominant WRs in this year's draft, so they'd have to go with Jenkins. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Matt, Raleigh: Hey KC...don't you think that horrible pass rush in SF had something to do with Clements numbers? KC Joyner: That would have been my first inclination but Walt Harris put up a 7.3 YPA, which is .6 better than Clements. And, as I mentioned earlier, teams didn't avoid Clements despite the 49ers having many other pass coverage weaknesses. That means NFL OCs aren't that worried about throwing at him. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Tyler (PHX, az): KC, prior to last season you said that based on metrics, you thought Rod Hood was one of the best free agent signings. What do your metrics say after watching him perform in a starting role this past season? Did he live up to your expectations? KC Joyner: He ended up ranking 24th in YPA and had a 50.5% success rate, so I'd say he lived up. And he did that despite facing 99 passes, so teams were testing him and failing for the most part. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Bill (Green Bay): Do you think that Jake Long was what the Dolphins needed? Who do you think the best player in the draft is? KC Joyner: Jake Long was exactly what the Fins needed. It isn't well known because of their bad record in 2007, but Miami actually has a very good O line. Left tackle was the one position they were lacking in and Long takes care of that problem. Look for a lot of offensive improvement out of Miami next year because of their top of the line O line. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Anthony (NYC): KC wouldn't the Bills be better off drafting DE- Harvey to apply pressure on the QB, they're secondary is pretty good. KC Joyner: They would be if they believe Youboty is still going to be a top line CB. If that's the case (and the jury is still out on Youboty in my estimation), then going for a WR or DE makes sense. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Aaron (Denver): What the heck!!! I just read that the Broncos traded for D. Robertson for pick or picks. I know he hasn't missed much playing time over the last couple season but if a player fails a physical don't you nix a trade? I don't understand. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Randy (Wyoming): KC espn just reported that the Broncos traded for Dewayne Robertson for an undisclosed draft pick? What do you think of the move? KC Joyner: Guys, don't forget the Broncos track record. When it comes to D linemen, they like to take players with a lot of talent who didn't pan out elsewhere. This move fits right into their mindset. I think Robertson has bust potential written all over him, but you aren't going to get the Broncos to change they way they do things. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Eric (Long Island, NY): kc when will you finally admit you're a bills fan? glad to have you aboard! KC Joyner: Eric, my emails are split between people who think I'm a Bills basher and those who think I'm a Bills fan. I was a Dolphins fan for many years before doing this but since I started writing for a living, I've given up my Aqua and Orange glasses and try to see things for how they are. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Raymond (Detroit,MI): The NFL should move the Draft to other cities like the supwe bowl, what do you think of that idea? KC Joyner: Love it. All it takes is some floor space and a podium, so it's not like it has to be held in NYC. Let the fans in other cities enjoy it up close and personal. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- jay (ny): Do you see the Giants trading Shockey to the Saints? If so, what would they do with that 2nd round pick? A safety(t. Johnson) or a linebacker someone like dan conner. KC Joyner: I don't understand why NO would be willing to pay so much for Shockey. Shockey's metrics over the years have been mediocre and NO has a decent TE situation going for them right now. No need to give up good draft value for a guy who is likely to drop off in productivity over the next few years. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Tubs (Miami): If you're a Dolphins fan then answer a Dolphins question. Will the Dolphins draft a QB in the first three rounds? I hope not, because it means Beck can play. KC Joyner: Tubs, I used to be a Fins fan. It turned out to be good timing because I didn't have to go through the 1-15 year as a fan! To answer the question, though, I wouldn't be surprised to see them go for a QB. Beck certainly didn't look like the answer last year and this draft has enough quality prospects that Miami should be able to get one in the later rounds. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- George (NY): The Super Bowl rotates around 4 or 5 spots, keep the draft in NYC! NYC will never get the SB. KC Joyner: George, I'll trade you the Super Bowl for the draft. Move them both to cities that they haven't been in for a while! -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Ron (Washington DC): Giants fans everywhere are sick with the thought of ELI on the cover of Madden. the jinx is real KC Joyner: Maybe Eli was offered the cover and backed out because of that! That actually wouldn't surprise me at all and would be just another sign of improved maturity on his part. Well, I've got some calls coming in so I've got to hit the road. Just an FYI, you can find the chapter listing for my upcoming book "Blindsided, Why The Left Tackle Is Overrated and Other Contrarian Football Thoughts" on my website, The Football Scientist. Hope to see you all next week! |

Re: Espn Nfl Chats
Welcome to The Show! On Thursday Scouts Inc.'s Matt Williamson will stop by to talk about the NFL's offseason.
Send in your questions now and stop by Thursday at 3 p.m. ET to join the chat! Williamson Archive: Columns | Chats Matt Williamson: Okay Everyone, let's get started a little bit early today. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Eric (Rockford,IL): Please be honest, are the Bears really considering trading up for Matt Ryan and is that a good idea? Matt Williamson: I don't know if they are or not and I am also a big believer in Ryan, but for Chi, I don't think it would be a good idea. If you look at most of the 1st round QB busts, those players were usually thrown into a really tough environment to succeed-which is exactly what Chi's O is right now. Build the OL. Get a RB and WR. Then think QB. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Dave O'Brien (Fulton, NY): Why is there no mention of Josh Johnson in the draft? He has amazing stats. Matt Williamson: Amazing stats. & he is a very good player. He will be picked-probably in the fourth round or so. He still has a fair amount of work to do and obviously has a tough transition from SD to the NFL. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Matt (Minneapolis): Can the 49ers end the Alex Smith experiment this weekend and grab one of the Henne-Brohm-Flacco trio? It's time to move on and hope that Aaron Rodgers doesn't turn into the best QB from 2005. Matt Williamson: That wouldn't be the right move. Much like I said with Chi, SF need to work on the rest of the O for now. Smith has been forced to work with new OC's year after year. Martz could be a good fit and Turner was fine as well, but stability is needed. I am not going to say that Smith is the savior, but he needs more of a chance. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- SprungOnSports (Long Island): Will there be any takers for Jason Taylor before the draft and will the Dolphins be able to get a first rounder? Matt Williamson: I do think there will be a market and I would give up my first rounder for JT if I were in charge of Jax. Outside of the Jags though, I doubt they can get a first rounder for him at his age. Still a force though. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Hendersonville, NC: Do you see the Bengals dealing Chad Johnson for 2 1st rounders or an good off./Def. lineman and a 1st rounder? What about the rumor I hear about Taylor to Cinci. for Johnson, any truth? Matt Williamson: 85 is worth more than Taylor. Honestly, I have to think that 85 is on his way out. Cincy could/should be trying to create competition between Wash, Philly and Dallas for 85's services. Are they doing that? Who knows, but I don't really trust their track record to handle the whole situation properly. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Brandon (Bellevue, WA): Do you see a scenario where Seattle might trade a draft pick for Jason Taylor? Matt Williamson: I like Taylor, but DE isn't a major need for Sea right now. They need pass catchers. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Harrison Wyckoff NJ: I know the Giants lost Gibril Wilson and Kawika Mitchell to free agency. In the draft should the Giants take round 1 a safet like Kenny Phillips of MIAMI or a Linebacker like Beau Bell of UNLV. Matt Williamson: That is way too early for Bell, who is stiff and more of an inside pounder. Phillips would be a great pick though. There is also a lot of talk of them going for another safety in Tyrell Johnson from Ark State. Maybe a LB like D Connor. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Mike(Charlotte): Matt, Do the Cowboys still think about a possible CB with 1 of their first 3 picks after the Pacman trade? Matt Williamson: Yes-Pac Man is rather difficult to count on, especially for the long haul. Their top needs are still WR, CB and RB. I used to rank them CB, WR and then RB, but after getting Pac Man, I have moved CB to third. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Pete (Boston): The Giants situation with Shockey and the draft is interesting. If they get Harper for Shockey does that mean they take a much needed LB with their pick? Dan Connor? Matt Williamson: That all adds up well. If that would happen, I think NYG's D will be even better on paper than last year. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Josh (Asheville, NC): Matt, which of the top o-lineman will be available when my Steelers get their 10 minutes on Saturday? I have been seeing in most "mocks" that the 1st round talented OL will be gone byfore the Steelers pick? Our OL was bad last year with Faneca, now without a replacement for Faneca, what will happen to Ben? Thanks. Matt Williamson: G Cherilus is the name you most see associated with PGH, but as a pure RT, I don't think he is a great fit. This is a deep OL draft and I would bet they address the OL with later picks and not with their first rounder. Also, PGH very well could trade down to bring in more young bodies. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- SprungOnSports (Long Island): Who do you think the Jets will aim for in the first round, and will they have to trade up to get their man? Matt Williamson: While NYJ have drastically improved since the season ended, they still have their share of needs. I wouldn't trade down and would be quite happy with Gholston, McFadden or Ryan at #6. One will be there for sure. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Os (Piscataway, NJ): Give RU a little love. Ray Rice is the steal of the RB class. Matt Williamson: Big fan of Rice here myself. Someone will pull the trigger on him in round 2 and end up very happy about it. How about your boy Zuttah as well? Very good prospect in his own right. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Brett(Alaska): What will the Vikings do with their 2nd round pick? O-Line, D-Back or maybe WR? Matt Williamson: Those all make sense and although I highly doubt they do it (esp without a 3rd rounder), I would be real tempted to make a move to grab one of the top 4 QBs if they should start to fall. I like the Vikes and commend them for the Allen trade, but I don't trust T Jackson one bit. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Brandon (Bellevue, WA): The Seahawks have continued to express their position of taking the "best player available" and yet Mocks have them taking a TE in the 1st. TE is a need, yes, but there is NO WAY that a TE will be the BPA at #25, right? Matt Williamson: You are dead on dude. In fact, I don't know that you could convince me that the TE they would take at #25 is really that much better (if at all) than the one they would get in round 2. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Os (Jersey): Over the last few weeks Mayo has skyrocketed in buzz. Is he really gone by the middle of round 1? Matt Williamson: I have said for a while that I think he is the best LB prospect in this draft and better than Rivers. Would be shocked if he was there after Det's pick. NE isn't into taking LBs that high, but he is their type of guy. Just saying... -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Joe (Buffalo): Why are the Bills not in the Ocho Cinqo sweepstakes??? Wouldn't he solve the WR need? And it seems to me like the Bills have enough picks in this draft to make an offer. Your thouhgts??? Matt Williamson: 85 would be a FAR better WR than they would get by reaching for one with their first round pick. But, that is a conservative franchise and I just don't think they want such a combustable personality up there right now with their young nucleus. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Will Jacksonville Fl: the Jags seem to be in a really bad spot for thier needs. The top 6 Ol and DL prospects could be gone along with the top 4 CB's. If that's the case a trade back or Jason Taylor? Matt Williamson: I very much agree, which makes them the logical suitor for JT. They are a contender. Be aggressive and get a difference making pass rusher. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Wally (Los Angeles, Ca): It seems like the Saints will be making some sort of trade on draft day. What do you think is more likely, a trade up for Dorsey or Ellis, or a veteran trade for either Lito or Shockey? Matt Williamson: Trading up for Ellis. Shockey very well could happen as well, but Dorsey could be too expensive and Ellis might only cost them a third rounder or so if they are very patient and he begins to slip. 1. Ellis 2. Trade for Shockey....Then NO is a contender. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- TK (brooklyn): Matt, what are the chances Buffalo picks the highest rated player on their board with the 11th pick and then trades up into the late first for early second round to get the big WR that they have been coveting? Matt Williamson: That makes much more sense to me than taking D Thomas that high. Get someone like B Albert or D Harvey instead. Even McKelvin. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- SprungOnSports (Long Island): What are the chances that a QB not named Matt Ryan will go in the first round? Matt Williamson: Very good. To whom and at what pick? I have no idea. But ATL has to be excited to come up to grab one. Several teams will make the move for one of the big 4. Just think, there are certainly more than 4 teams out there who would like a potential starting QB. More demand than supply. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Os (Jersey): Matt, say JAX does pull that trade for JT. Does MIA take Groves? Matt Williamson: Would be a great fit for a rebuilding Miami team. In fact, Groves wouldn't be such a bad choice for Jax either. That guy can make an immediate impact as a situational pass rusher. Saying it now: He will have over 7.5 sacks as a rookie. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Brian in VA: What do the Lions need to addrss? o-line? Matt Williamson: As usual, they need an awful lot. On D, they need a DT, DE and MLB. On O, at least one starting lineman (RT), but probably need two to be more realistic. A big RB is certainly needed as well for Colletto to run the O he desires. Also, while they shouldn't address it now, they don't yet know if Stanton can be their QB of the future. That team is still a mess. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Ryan, Ohio: Where do you think Crable will fall to? I've heard the Browns are eyeing him in the 3rd/4th round. Matt Williamson: Local guy for the Browns. Late third would be the earliest that I would show interest in Crable and only if I were desperate for a 3-4 OLB. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Scott - C Town: What are you hearing about MIchael Bush, if Oakland takes McFadden does Bush have any trade value, or does that mean he is a bust Matt Williamson: With the status of Oak's DL, I still find it VERY hard to believe that they pull the trigger on McF. I am not the biggest McF fan to begin with, but RB is one position that they have. Oak is truly fortunate enough to get one of these guys: Dorsey, Long, Gholston or Ellis-take the big man up front! -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Mad Mike (Houston): Matt: Who do you think the Texans will have a choice of at 18? OT, CB? Who would be your choice? Thanks.....MM Matt Williamson: You here that Chris Williams is dropping and he could make sense there for sure. CB makes even more sense though and there should be a quality CB available. I bet McKelvin is gone and he is my personal favorite, but Jenkins, Talib or DRC will be there. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Os (Jersey): So if Groves is off the board, what good LB could the 49ers take at 29 or 39? Matt Williamson: How about Avril at 39? Not a bad move. I still think they need one more OLineman for sure as well as one more WR-remember, B Johnson is only signed for one year and Bruce doesn't have much left. Still, their WRs are so much better than they were last year. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Kyle (San Diego): In your infinite wisdom, do you see any general changes in how the draft runs this weekend given the shortened clock teams now have to work with? More trades? Less trades? Matt Williamson: Infinite? Hmmm. Well, it obviously will be faster paced, which is good for the viewing audience without a doubt. This is an odd draft and I could see more trades than usual. Not because of the allotted time, but because teams have specific needs and could have many differing opinions on specific prospects. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Drew New York, NY: Who do you think the Rams will do with the number two pick? Matt Williamson: It is a two horse race between C Long and Dorsey. I like both, but think that Dorsey is the best prospect in this entire draft. Still, Carriker is best suited to play the three technique and moving him outside to DE might not work out as planned. The key would be to convince ATL that STL wants Dorsey, swap spots and pick up another pick while taking Long. Torn myself, but I guess I would go with Long (who I also REALLY like). -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Mad Mike (Houston): Matt: I am fine with Williams, Jenkins would love McKelvin to be there, but I would rather have Flowers than Talib! And no RB as some have suggested.......MM Matt Williamson: Ignore RB-agreed. I really like Cason as well and put Cason and Flowers over Talib. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Chris (Ashland, Ore): If Williams is dropping, that must mean Denver is taking Stewart or Mendenhall, huh? Matt Williamson: Or Mayo -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Matt (Atlanta): Does your statement that Atlanta is likely to move into the first round to grab a QB mean you think it is unlikely they will take Ryan? Matt Williamson: I think ATL's board goes 1. Dorsey 2. J Long 3. Ryan...so no, that isn't a done deal of course. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Steven (tulsa): If the top 4 goes Long, Long, Dorsey, Gholston, then what do the chiefs do at 5? I think they do whatever they can to trade out with either baltimore or new orleans. Matt Williamson: Perhaps. I wouldn't completely dismiss Ellis with their pick though either. Move McBride to DE and then draft another DE with one of their many selections. Ellis is a beast. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Chuck (Mnpls): Antoine Cason looks like a great fit in GB. Would he be available in the top of the 2nd round should the Pack trade back with a qb-needy team? Matt Williamson: I think that is about where Cason goes and I also think he will make someone very happy. If the Steelers at 23 pulled the trigger on him I wouldnt be shocked. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Matt (Atlanta): We don't want Ryan in Atlanta. The fans can't take another QB bust. Matt Williamson: That would be also be a real tough environment for such a high pick to flourish initially. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Brad(NM): Is Devin Thomas too much of a reach for Buffalo at 11? Should they be looking to trade down? Matt Williamson: I think it is far too much of a reach. In our mock, I took Harvey as Buff's GM and would get a WR in round 2. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Jason (Cleveland): The Bengals seem to be in the worst possible draft spot for any of their major needs. They are also handling the 85 problem like toddlers. Could the way that they manage Saturday turn them back into the Bengals of the late 90's? Matt Williamson: Starting to feel that way myself. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Jim: Ocean Springs: Matt, where do you think LSU CB Jackson will be drafted? McShay's Scouts, Inc. mock doesn't even have him being drafted. Matt Williamson: Cover 2 teams should covet him in the 3rd round or so. Todd knows more draft than I do and maybe he just overlooked Jackson, but I certainly think he gets picked. Could be a very good FS as well if he busts at CB. Matt Williamson: Okay everyone, this was fun. I am pysched for Saturday. Have fun. -MW |

Re: Espn Nfl Chats
Welcome to The Show! On Tuesday, Scouts Inc.'s Matt Williamson will stop by to talk about the NFL's offseason.
Send in your questions now and stop by at 3pm ET to join the chat! Williamson Archive: Columns | Chats -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Ben (Atlanta): Matt...once the Jake Long deal is approved by the league office, do the Rams then have the ability to negotiate with players at the #2 spot? Matt Williamson: Yes. They are now on the clock and have the enviable position of chosing between C Long and G Dorsey. Nice problem to have. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- John (Tucson, AZ): Should the Tennessee Titans go after Chad Johnson, or would his personality clash with Vince Young? Matt Williamson: I don't know the two of them personally, but that doesn't sound like a great fit to me. Also, Marvin Lewis has made if awfully clear that 85 isn't going anywhere. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Mike (Coral Springs, FL): Do you think there is a market for the Redskins 1st round pick? I understand they are trying to trade out of it. Matt Williamson: Sure. There is a market for every first rounder and that should be about when the #2 QB starts to get some serious attention. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- John (Oregon): If Jonathon Stewart is around at 22, shouldn't the Cowboy's take him, as opposed to say Felix Jones who I think is overrated? Matt Williamson: I agree with you. What you and I don't know though is the extent of Stewart's injury. Still, with Barber in the fold, they can wait for Stewart to recover. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Dan (Miami): Hey Matt, do you think there is any chance the Dolphins use their 2nd round pick to get Jake Long's good friend Chad Henne? Matt Williamson: Sure. Henne or Flacco makes sense at #32 and I think Brohm will be gone already. Still, I could also see them passing on that QB and taking one of several positions. Maybe go with Beck for the year and attack QB next year at this time. There are a lot of spots that need filling in Miami. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Ben (Atlanta): Rumors are that the Saints are hot for Dorsey. What type of package would it take for them to trade up to #2 with the Rams or #3 with the Falcons? Matt Williamson: That is funny you asked. All of us Scouts, Inc. NFL guys had a live mock draft today-it will hit the site tomorrow. I had the Saints and tried to get to #2 overall to get Dorsey. It ended up just being too rich for my blood, but I was able to move to #5 and grab Ellis without completly destroying the rest of my draft. Ellis is probably a more likely target. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Pat (atl): Matt, what do you see happening with the Vikings/Jared Allen situation? Matt Williamson: I think he will become a Viking. They are nuts not to grab him and he very well could be the best DE in the league today. He is a far better player than they will be able to get at #17 and if they can keep their 2nd round selection to help out their O, Minny will be very much improved. Allen would be a great fit for the Vikes. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Matt, Raleigh: Any chance the Niners trade out of the first instead of reaching for an OT or WR? Matt Williamson: Sure. There should be several teams trying to get back in-mostly to target a QB. SF has plenty of room on their roster for quality players. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Zac (Oakland): If Long and Gholston are available at #4, who do the Raiders take? Seems to me Long would be a no brainer. But we all know Al loves speed. I worry that gohston might be another Mike Mamula, a workout wonder only. Matt Williamson: I am right with you. Mamula was considered a third round prospect though before he went nuts at the Combine, while everyone had Gholston in the top frame even before he blew up. I think Long is a no-brainer and my draft rankings for Oakland-if I were in charge-would go something like this: Dorsey, J Long, C Long, Ellis, Gholston/McFadden -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Steve (Moscow, ID): How do you like the Broncos receivers now they have Jackson? Is Marshall (if he gets healthy), Stokley, and Jackson a good enough corp to compete? Is receiver still a need? Matt Williamson: It sounds promising for Marshall to recover and he is now a legit #1 WR. Stud. Also, they should get even better production from Graham and Scheffler, so that cannot be overlooked. I like that Den was aggressive in adding D-Jax and Parker, but I also don't think that anyone was banging down their doors either. The same can probably be said for Colbert as well. So, yes, they could still use another WR, but I would think that the combination of what they have should be suitable considering their other pressing needs, esp at OL and DT. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- casey (florida): Is darren mcfadden as good as marion barber or reggie bush? Matt Williamson: I bet he is better than Bush right now. Not much of a Bush fan here. But McF also has some similiar characteristics-both good and bad. Right now, Barber is the best of the three, but I would would still want a complement to Barber if I were in Dallas' shoes. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Kellan (Ireland): What's going on with Buffalo, trade down, reach, or take best player available?? Matt Williamson: Cover 2 CBs are not at a huge premium and Buff could find a good one in rounds 2 or 3 in this deep draft. They have a major need for a big WR, but taking one that early would be foolish in my opinion. That leaves trading down or going for a lesser need position. D Harvey would be real tough to pass on, as pass rushers are always at a premium and Buff's DEs are pretty ordinary as a whole. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- SpencerNJ): were the bengals nuts for not taking the redskins trade or is chad johnson worth more than just a first and third round pick? Matt Williamson: I would have taken it and I am a big fan of 85-on the field. Stud WR. Still, the guy just does not want to play in Cincy and cutting ties isn't such a terrible idea. Ship him off. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- casey (florida): From 1 to 5 who is the top 5 running backs in the league? Matt Williamson: Hmmm...still have to give #1 to LT. Peterson is #2. Westbrook or S Jax is probably #3. Having a tough time coming up with #5 off the top of my head-leaning towards Addai. Could be forgetting someone, but I feel pretty good about that list. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Mark (Hartford, CT): What do you think of the Pats trading with Philly, giving up the #7 for #19 and Lito Sheppard? Matt Williamson: Not a terrible deal for NE, but the quality in this draft at #19 is much different than at #7-would have to see if Gholston or maybe another stud is still around at 7 before considering it. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- John (Berkeley): How do some guys (specifically thinking of my boy Lavelle Hawkins, but it seems like it happens all the time) slip from the top two rounds to the fifth (from most recent mocks i'm seeing) without doing anything to hurt their stock? Matt Williamson: Yeah, that is odd and might not really reflect exactly what is going on with the player's stock. As for Hawkins, many had him in that 4th/5th range after Cal's season. Then, he blew up at the Senior Bowl and he was getting that Top 50 pub. Then, his workouts were just average, so he fell again. He probably was never as high as many wanted to believe. Some get far too caught up in what they see most recently. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- MW (NY): Do you think the Bucs take Desean Jackson at the 20th pick? Matt Williamson: That makes some sense for sure, as they could use a threatening returner as well. A bigger WR would be better, but Jackson isn't a bad fit in TB. I think WR or CB will be the pick and either position may have a suitable selection for where they pick. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Colin (Boulder): What do you think of the rumors about the Broncos grabbing Mendy or J-Stewart at 12 rather than an OT? Matt Williamson: Doesn't sound very smart to me. They need big guys and while I realize that their history of pluggin in cheaper RBs hasn't worked out quite as well of late, I also think much of that goes back to who is doing the blocking. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Rob (RI): If Sammy Morris can remain healthy this year how would you compare the Patriots 1, 2, combination of RB's compared to the rest of the league? Matt Williamson: K Faulk needs to factor in there as well. I like Maroney more than most do and he was very impressive to finish the 2007 season. Morris is good-more like servicable I guess. I could probably come up with a dozen backfields that I would rather have, but could certianly come up with ten or so that NE's is better than as well. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Rich (Utah): Matt, what are your plans for draft day? Matt Williamson: I am doing the local radio broadcast here in Pittsburgh-same as last year. Good stuff. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Brent (Chicago, IL): Are the Bears going to wise up and take an OL like Willams or are they going to take another 1st round RB? Matt Williamson: I have a feeling that they will jump all over Mendenhall. I like Mendenhall, but they need big people first. You are dead on bro. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Jeremy (Kansas City): Hey Matt, What round do you predict Oregon's Dennis Dixon to be drafted in? And do you think he could be a wise pick for the Chiefs? Matt Williamson: 5th. Also depends on his recovery from injury. For KC? Not really. If they go for a young QB, they need to go for a big time prospect. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- George (NY): I really like Steve Slaton, James Hardy and Phillip Merling. Where do you see these 3 being taken and do you think they would be good picks for the Jets? Matt Williamson: I wouldn't address the RB spot unless they just love McFadden, so I would prob pass on Slaton for NYJ. Merling is a first rounder and it is questionable as to how he would perform as a 3-4 DE. He won't be there for their 2nd pick and won't be a Jet. Hardy makes sense as NYJ's 2nd pick though. Big target. TD machine. Wouldn't have to come in and start immediatly, but could sure pay dividends. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- bill (rochester, ny): is this a done deal or can miami still call someone elses name for the first pick? i gotta believe this is not there plan to pick jake long. Matt Williamson: He signed a contract. He is the pick. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- SpencerNJ): Matt, will Matt Ryan be available at the 8th pick or will the Ravens need to move up to get him? Matt Williamson: While it could happen and Balt would be very fortunate if it does, I gotta give the odds of Ryan being there at #8 at about 20%. He is just too good of a player and NYJ might snag him. Also, if Dorsey goes #2, Ryan should go #3 to ATL. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Rick-Lowell, MA: Whe nails more picks this year in their first round mock, McShay or Kiper? Matt Williamson: No idea-but it really doesn't mean a thing. You miss one and the whole draft changes. Trades, etc. Mocks are nuts when people evaluate your knowledge on the number of guys you get right. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Jeff (B-More): Do you think Troy Smith should get a shot at starting QB for the Ravens this year? Matt Williamson: He should be in the running even if they do happen to land Ryan. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Henry Wash. D.C.: Would you be concerned with Darren McFadden"s off feild problems and how do you compare him to Adrian Peterson? Thanks. Matt Williamson: I would be concerned for sure. While he hasn't been in serious trouble, it seems like a "Where there is smoke, there could be fire" situation. Compared to Peterson: Far lesser prospect. Can't rely on his pure speed at this level. No where near as big, strong or as physical. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Michael: (Romoland, Ca): Steelers obviously need O-line help but since the draft is deep in that position is there any chance they take a flyer on J Stewart or another position? Matt Williamson: PGH's OL needs do not stack up well with the talent that will be available, so expect them to go OL outside the first frame. Stewart is a very good player and they do have interest in him, but with W Parker and now M Moore in the fold, another position might make more sense. Matt Williamson: Folks, I have to run. This was great and we will do it again on Thursday. Check out our Scouts, Inc. draft tomorrow. Good stuff. |

Re: Espn Nfl Chats
Welcome to The Show! On Wednesday, Mel Kiper Jr. will drop by to talk about the 2008 NFL draft.
Send your questions now and join Mel this Wednesday at 11 a.m. ET! Kiper Archive: Chats | Columns Buzzmaster: We're getting Mel right now! Mel Kiper: We've got the draft coming up. Let's get to the questions! -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Rick-Lowell, MA: Why do I keep hearing that Chris Long may fall out of the top 5? I think Long and Dorsey are the 2 guaranteed not to fall past 5. Am I wrong? Mel Kiper: I don't think Long. I think Long goes two to St. Louis or 5 to KC. He would be an interest as a 3-4 OLB standpoint. He could play on his feet. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Alex (Tulsa, Oklahoma): Since Miami has primarily addressed their offensive line issue by signing Jake Long as the number 1 pick in the draft, do you see them drafting a QB in the second round or are their other positions they should attend to? Mel Kiper: You keep hearing that Chad Henne is going to get some consideration at 32. But to me you don't bring in competition if you believe in the young QB in John Beck. We'll know what they think about Beck when they draft 32nd. Mel Kiper: This team has tons of needs. CB, TE, WR, OG. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Bret - Ionia,MI: Everything I've read has the Lions taking RB Mendenhall. I'm worried Chicago might take him first. I think it's a good move for Detroit. What do you think? Mel Kiper: I don't think Chicago takes Mendenhall at 14. Mendenhall is the kind of guy, you wonder if Detroit would take him. But Jerod Mayo would be a perfect fit for their system. Then in the second round get a Ray Rice or Chris Johnson. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Michael (Houston): What are the chances Baltimore goes with Ellis over Ryan assuming they are both available at 8? Mel Kiper: No. They have to take the QB. They have to take the QB. The Ravens have to come out of this first round with a QB. Either taking one at 8 or moving back into the first round to get one late. If Ryan's gone, then they might move back in to get Flacco. If Ellis is there at 8, then possibly Baltimore could move from 8 to 10 and allow New Orleans to get Ellis. Then they could hope that Ryan is there at 10. But that's risky. What's to say a team wouldn't move in to 9 to get Ryan. Mel Kiper: If Ryan's gone at 8, I think Baltimore might look at Rivers or a CB. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Joe (Huntsville,AL): Who is a better pick for the Falcons, Ryan or Dorsey? Mel Kiper: They could go either way. Dorsey is my No. 1 player in this draft and Ryan is my No. 3. If they feel they can get back into the first round, and get Flacco or someone. They're like Baltimore, they have to get a QB in the first round. They could take Dorsey at 3 and then try to trade back in to get a Flacco, Henne or Brohm. To me, Dorsey is a hard guy to pass up. But they need a QB. I don't think they can go wrong either way. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Kris Chicago, IL: Our Jeff Otah or Chris Williams good enough prospects of being starters early in the season for the bears if either one gets drafted? Mel Kiper: If you draft the LT, you expect him to play from Day 1. Chicago also needs a RB. Jonathan Stewart is a guy I look at. He could be a really good tandem RB with Benson. They're a team that you look at, there is no WR to take at 14. I don't see them taking a QB at 14. I would say it's a LT like Otah or Clady or someone like that. Or they take Stewart or a Felix Jones. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Rich( N.Syracuse NY): The bills need a quality tight end. Any hope for them in early rounds!!! Mel Kiper: I think it is. Second round, they could look at John Carlson from Notre Dame or Fred Davis from USC. If they want to go third round, they could look at Kellen Davis or Brad Cottam. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Chuck (San Jose): If Howie Jr and Gholston are available at #4, it is a no brainer for the Raiders to take Howie Jr, right? Please tell me Al will not be seduced by Gholston's speed? This guy is inconsistent and has too many comparsions to Mamula, most likely just a workout wonder. Mel Kiper: No. I have heard that they'd go Gholston over Chris Long. That's just what I've heard. With McFadden and Ellis in the discussion. Ultimately, Al Davis makes this call, which makes it a very tricky pick to call. I've heard from various sources that it could be Long. I think Gholston or McFadden would make the most sense. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- daniel (norman ok): how about malcom kelly from OU do you think he still has a chance to go in the first round after poor combine and pro day performances Mel Kiper: Devin Thomas is going to be the first WR taken. He could go as early as 11 to Buffalo. Kelly could go in the late first round. Dallas, Pittsburgh, Tennessee all looking for WRs. If I had to guess right now, I would say Kelly is an early second round pick. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- tom* (parkville, md): How will the Jake Long signing affect picks 2-5 in Saturday's draft? Mel Kiper: It doesn't effect it at all. It's been about the last three weeks that we've been predicting he would go to Miami. Teams have prepared for that. Once you lock in Long, you knew that the Rams would be looking DT. It really has been laid out for about three weeks now. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Steve (Manchester, NH): Patriots...what is the likelihood that they trade down? If they do who will be their trade partner and what can they expect to get for #7? If they stay at 7....what direction do they go? Mel Kiper: It could be New Orleans at 10. They could trade with Denver at 12. Carolina at 13. I would think those would be some of the teams that would be looking to move up. The two teams that would definitely be possibilities are New Orleans to get Ellis and Carolina to get Matt Ryan. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Jordan (Houston, TX(: The Texans have several needs, what direction do you see them going with their pick at 18? Mel Kiper: They could go RB and get Jonathan Stewart or Mendenhall. They could take a CB. I would go one of those two positions. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Matt (Boston): Combine time, Dominic Rodgers Cromartie was the hottest name out there for cornerbacks. Why has the talk about him cooled down? Mel Kiper: A little bit. He was hot for a long time. For the combine, Senior Bowl week. It's just a long process leading up to the draft. He's not a real good run support corner. It wouldn't shock anybody if he went in the top 10 or went 21. He could go from 7-21. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Stephen (Bluefield WV): If the Raiders do not select McFadden at 4, is he definitely going to the Jets? How far could he slide? Mel Kiper: Oakland has got to consider McFadden. He has got to get consideration from the Jets. Adrian Peterson went at 7, McFadden could go at 6. I don't see him getting past the Jets. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Mike (Brooklyn): Hey Mel, you have Tyrell Johnson as your Number 1 safety in the draft. In your opinion, what does he have that Kenny Phillips doesn't? Mel Kiper: When you compare the two, I thought Johnson had a much better year. He was the Sun Belt Conference DPOY. He had some real strong games against Texas, Tennessee, Memphis, Southern Mississippi. He played against some quality teams, even though he played in the Sun Belt. He's faster than Phillips. Stronger. Just as athletic. His performance was superior. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- TD (OH): Mel, The breaking news in you sector of the industry is the Allen trade ... period! How does the trade affect the first ten picks? Mel Kiper: KC could all of a sudden could look DE over OT. They could look at Chris Long or Harvey over Brandon Albert. I think Harvey, if he goes at 5 would be one of the major reaches of the first round. He's No. 23 on my board. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Ryan (SF) : Mel.. Christmas is only a couple of days away.. What can us 49er fans expect to find under the tree? Any chance they can trade back and pick up an extra 2nd or 3rd Rd pick? Mel Kiper: Possibly. Where they're picking late in the first is usually where you find some activity. They need WR help, OLB, DE, CB. They could be a team that's looking to pick up some choices. If they stay where they are, I think they look OLB or WR. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- JAP (Dallas): Why are the saints not looking at McFadden. With Deuce being hurt and not having much left, shouldnt they consider him? Mel Kiper: No. No. New Orleans has to look at DT or a CB. They have McAllister coming back and Bush. What this offense really needs is a TE. On defense, they desperately need a DT or a CB. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Louis (DC): Did the Vikings overpay for Allen? Mel Kiper: They know they're a DE away from being a dominant defense. Allen is a talented football player. They know at 17 they're not going to get a DE of his caliber. The thing about Minnesota is that they don't know if they have the right QB. The jury is still out on Jackson. This is a real good football team that is a QB away. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Nick (the Ville): Mel, where do you see Brian Brohm being picked? Mel Kiper: He could go late first round to a team trading back in to Round 1. I would say early to mid second round. You could look at Chicago, Carolina, Minnesota, Atlanta. Those are the possibilities in Round 2. Mel Kiper: Enjoy the draft! We've been doing this since August. We'll do a review chat at some point next week. Stay tuned for that. |

Re: Espn Nfl Chats
Chat with Scouts Inc.'s Jeremy Green
Welcome to The Show! On Wednesday, ESPN.com NFL Insider Jeremy Green will stop by to take your questions on the NFL. Green writes regularly for ESPN.com's NFL Insider section and is a former NFL scout and director of pro personnel for the Cleveland Browns. Send your questions now and join Jeremy on Wednesday at 3 p.m. ET for all the answers. Green Archive: Chats | Columns Buzzmaster: We're getting Jeremy right now! Jeremy Green: Wednesday, hump day, middle of the week. The Rams are now on the clock! -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Gina ( Cincinnati ): Do the Bengals break and trade Chad Johnson and what could they get for him? Jeremy Green: I don't think they'll trade him. They had a deal that got them a No. 1 and a second that could be another No. 1. That's a steal for a 30-year-old player. Jeremy Green: For Marvin Lewis to say that they're not trading him and for him not to come. It sounds childish to me. If they really don't want him to show, then trade him. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Chuck ( Miami): Will the Fins trade JT? Should they if they can get a second rounder or better? Jeremy Green: I wouldn't trade him. Even though he's 33, you're talking about a guy in that scheme that can still get 10-plus sacks. He's still a very versatile player in that scheme. If they can get a first rounder, I might consider that. But I think they hold on to him. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Jason (Northfield, OH): JG, Where do the Broncos go? They seem to be in a great spot for a trade up or down. Please don't say Jerod Mayo like the interactive mock. Jeremy Green: I'd say this. Denver, I think is the first team that could make us go ''wow.'' They've done that to us before. I think they like Jonathan Stewart, but that would go against their nature of going RB in the first round. Or they could go, and I don't think this is a stretch, Jerod Mayo. I think he'll be better than Keith Rivers. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- PT (Franklin, NC): How big of a shock would it be if the Raiders took Sedrick Ellis at 4 assuming Dorsey is gone? Jeremy Green: The Raiders aren't going to take Dorsey or Ellis. I don't think either one is a consideraion for them. Chris Long, Gholston, McFadden are the ones for them. I really think it's McFadden. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- CC (Atlanta): The #3 pick will shape the early part of the draft. If Dorsey goes 2, ATL will sell it to the highest bidder and move down to get Ellis or Clady. Ryan to ATL is a smokescreen. What do you think? Jeremy Green: If Glenn Dorsey is there, he's their No. 1 player on their board. I've heard they've talked to the Rams about moving up to No. 2. If Dorsey is off the board, unless they can talk Baltimore from going up 8 to 3, there aren't a lot of teams coveting that selection. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Richard (Baton Rouge): With the Fins signing Jake Long, how realistic is it that the Saints jump up to #2 to get Dorsey? Jeremy Green: I think that's a strong possibility. They would like to do that. They talked about moving up to No. 2. The problem for the Rams is that is a big drop. I think the more realistic for New Orleans is to move up to get Ellis at 6 or 7. To get to No. 2, it costs too much. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- CJ(New Hampshire): Is Jon Ogden planning on letting the Ravens know his intentions before the draft? Seems inconceivable that he would wait til after the draft to announce his retirement. If he is coming back they have a year to see if Gaither is the answer or draft someone early next year. Jeremy Green: He did mention that he thought he would be able to tell the team before the draft. I don't see them putting pressure on him to make that decision. To me, it's irrelevant. If he's not retiring this year, it might be next year. This team has to get an OT to groom him behind this potential future hall of famer. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Bob (Cinci): I agree with you Jeremy about Chad. I also feel that organization is a joke, they seem to make the worst decisions about everything. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Sean (Philly): Could you see the Eagles trading up to get Branden Albert? Seems like with Lito and their first they should be able to do it, maybe with the patriots who need a corner. Jeremy Green: That's tough for them, because KC at 5 and 17. KC is the only team that's been talked about taking him high so far. It's a strong move for the Eagles to get up that high. They could use Lito Sheppard to move up in the first round. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Anthony: (New York City):: Jeremy, please talk about the rumor going around about the Jets trading up to #2 and who they will draft. Jeremy Green: I heard a rumor that they're trying to get No. 2. If they do trade up, it's because they're trying to get Matt Ryan. I think the more likely scenario is moving from 6 to 4 to get McFadden. That's the more likely scenario. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Lardo ( Miami): You don't replace Zach Thomas, but who from this draft has the potential to replace his production in Miami? Jeremy Green: That's going to be tough because this is one of the worst LB drafts that we've seen in some time. Potentially only two LBs going in the first round. I think that's going to be very difficult for them. Connor from Penn State could be there at the top of the second round. They could use another CB, another playmaker outside. There are so many different ways they could go. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- jefe (texas): i know everyone is projecting the cowboys to take felix jones and a receiver in round 1. if you were the cowboys, what would be your ideal 2 picks? is there anyone out there that i should be hoping slides to #22 that will make a big move for us? Jeremy Green: Ideally, what you would like to do is maybe get Devin Thomas, the WR, with the first pick. Then I would see how it plays out. I don't think they need to take Felix Jones at 22. But he could probably get him with their second pick. The top 3 guys are all small school CBs. This is one of those CB drafts that guys are going to drop. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Brookes (DC): If you don't see Chad Johnson moving, do you see the Lions or Cardinals trading Roy or Anquan while the demand is high? Jeremy Green: The one that I would see the most would be Roy Williams, because he's an unrestricted free agent at the end of the season. But the Lions' draft history is awful. To potentially trade the best player they've ever had under Matt Millen sends the wrong message. I don't know how you can do that and expect the fans not to lose complete hope. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Kyle (OH): I know the Rams have other pressing 'needs,' but if McFadden is truly the most talented player in this draft, why wouldn't they take him? Jeremy Green: Great question. Why wouldn't he go No. 1 to Miami? Miami didn't even consider it. I think Miami needs a RB. They didn't even consider it. Steven Jackson is working on a long term deal. McFadden makes more sense in Miami than St. Louis. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Jason (Cleveland): Which top 15 pick do you see messing up their selection the most? Raiders? Lions? a new contender? Jeremy Green: I don't think the Raiders are going to mess it up. I think they take McFadden, the best player in this draft. Detroit's pick, if they take Mendenhall, I think that's concerning. He's risen so fast, but he's risen because of Stewart's injury. I think the Bengals would be the team to look at. There are so many scenarios. Their stubborness with Chad Johnson. I think the Bengals have a good chance of screwing this up. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Tyler (Carolina): If Derrick Harvey and Ryan Clady are gone, who would you see the Panthers taking at #13? Jeremy Green: Still a tackle. There's still a tackle there. We know KC is high on Branden Albert. Chris Williams and Jeff Otah will still be on the board. I think it's still an OT. Of if they trade back. If they could trade back 10 spots, they might take Brian Brohm. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- John Omaha, NE: What up Jeremy! Who is the 2nd best running back behind McFadden and do you think the Bears will draft a running back? Jeremy Green: I think the Bears should. Stewart is the second best RB in this draft. He's got good vision. He has some explosion. He catches the ball. He was clear cut ahead of Mendenhall. But Ron Tuner, the offensive coordinator, knows Mendenhall. But the Bears have to say they really screwed up the Benson pick. To take two RBs in three years in the first round, I don't know if they're ready to admit their mistake yet. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Matt, Raleigh: Hey Jeremy....do you see the Niners trading out of the first instead of reaching for an OT or WR? God help us if we end up with another Rashaun Woods... Jeremy Green: I don't think so. They might listen to offers, though. They'd have to listen, but you have a guy that might be there in Limas Sweed. I don't think he's a reach at all. You have an OT in Gosder Cherilous. Those guys aren't a reach. If they take an offensive player such as a WR, 49er fans should have a feeling that pick is good because it will come at the recommendation of Mike Martz and he knows how to get WRs the ball. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Landon(Boulder): What are your thoughts on the Jared Allen trade? Does MN now have the most dominant D-line in football? If Strahan retires it has to be them right? Jeremy Green: No question about that. They now have what they were already close to having - the most dominant OL and DL. They were the No. 1 running team and the No. 1 against the run. The only team like that that didn't make the playoffs was the 1991 Detroit Lions. Most important, getting guys that can rush the passer takes pressure off the pass defense. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Kyle (Columbus): Jeremy, Whats up, i gotta ask, is Urlacher going to be moved from Chicago? Jeremy Green: I do. I think they'll get something worked out. He wants to be there. Ultimately, he defines the Bears. The team wants him there. They get a deal done. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Pete C (Newark DE): Jeremy, why has the league not allowed the Rams to negotate with there pick since the #1 of off the board? Jeremy Green: Who knows? Because the league would do the complete opposite from what we think they should do. When the question came up, they didn't know the answer. There was no precedent. Whether they say so or not, we know the Rams are talking behind the scenes to the agent of Dorsey or Chris Long. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Mike (NJ): Do you see the Giants moving Shockey? If not, whom do they select at 31? Jeremy Green: If the right deal is there, they might move him. But I think he can be a big part of the offense. Eli is more confident now and will know better how to use Shockey in that system. They'd love for Mayo to be there, but I don't think he will be. Safety is the best fit there and there's not a guy moving up faster than Tyrell Johnson from Arkansas State. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Pete C (Newark DE): Jeremy, do you think the student athletes coming into the draft, which admitted drug use are at a disadvantage? How does the league view that? Jeremy Green: An admission doesn't count as a strike. I'm pretty sure he'll be under the watchful eye. What you really do is you hurt yourself is with the team when you say stuff like that. Talib missed a meeting and was late for another. It's a maturity thing. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Rick-Lowell, MA: What do you see as the most likely scenario for the Pats at 7? If they do pick, who would you say is the best fit? (don't you DARE say Ellis!!!) Jeremy Green: I think they'd like to trade down if they could. But who's coming in there? If Matt Ryan is still on the board, they're talking to QB teams. Ozzie Newsome is a smart guy, if Ryan's still on the board, I think he's calling to move up, even if it's one spot. If they keep the pick, they might look at Keith Rivers. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Aaron (Denver): Jeremy do you think its a stretch for the Broncos to draft Mayo at 12. Would it be a foolish pick in your mind? Jeremy Green: I really don't. I don't think it's a stretch at all. People think it's a stretch, because people don't have him in the first round. But I think he'll be a better player than Rivers. He's a more complete player than Keith Rivers. He's a perfect fit for MLB for the Broncos and it fixes one of their biggest problems. They need to get Williams back to his natural position. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Rudy (Michigan): Quick question - how do you see as the rest of the top 5 after Jake Long? Jeremy Green: I'll go Glenn Dorsey at No. 2; I think it will be Matt Ryan at No. 3, though I don't agree with the pick - it fills a need. At No. 4, I think it will be McFadden. It's the player Al Davis covets. At No. 5, Chris Long for the Chiefs. He's more consistent. KC has had some busts in the first round on the DL. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Jason (Bmore): The Steelers have a glaring need at the OL position, but I have a strange feeling they will draft defense. Is Kentwan Balmer, a great athelete but possibly bad worth ethic really a good fit? Jeremy Green: It depends on which offensive lineman is there. I think Pittsburgh is a prime team to try and trade out of the first round. They're probably as made as anybody that Branden Albert is more than a guard. He would have been a perfect fit for them. I think Balmer makes a better fit than a OL. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Demetrius (virginia): do you see carolina picking up rashard mendenhall to help d-williams Jeremy Green: No. They can't take another RB in the first round. Part of the problem they have right now with the running game is they have holes on the OL. It's time for Williams to step up and be the guy. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- PT (Franklin, NC): If Lane Kiffin got to make the decision on who the Raiders picked at number 4 who would he go with? Jeremy Green: I think he'd go defense. I think he'd go Chris Long. I think he feels like they're good enough on the offensive side of the ball with the backs that they have. Jeremy Green: Which to me is somewhat surprising because McFadden is a bigger, better version of Reggie Bush and he had him at USC. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- RC (Cincy): Where do you see Shawn Alexander ending up? Jeremy Green: Maybe Tampa Bay. Cadillac Williams has been slow to come back. There are not a lot of great fits for him. He's the complete opposite of what you want if he's your backup. He doesn't catch the ball, he doesn't play special teams. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Jason (Nashville): Hey Jeremy, there are a lot of rumors going around the NFL about big trades. Do you see any big trades going down in the draft this year? Titans? Jeremy Green: I really don't see a lot of big trades with this class. It's a good first round, but it's not an elite first round. With the elite player aspect missing, I don't think teams will be as apt to move up. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Tim (El Cajon, CA): Jeremy, what do you think the Chargers do? They don't really have any glaring needs. Think trade down and try and get more picks? And if not, what do they do? Jeremy Green: I think they'd like to. They'd like to trade down out of the first round, if they can. But the problem is that they don't need to bring 10 players to camp. They might try to move out of the first round and get some picks for next year. San Diego doesn't need a lot of extra players. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Glenn (Cumberland, RI): JG, if the draft goes according to the Live Mock Scouts is doing now, how screwed are the Bengals. No Ellis, no Rivers. I don't get the OT pick. Harvey or any CB would be a better fit. Jeremy Green: That's why I said they'd probably try to move up. I think they would probably panic. Right now, we give them an OT. They desperately need a defensive player. They need a LB or a DT. So, they probably need to try to trade Chad Johnson and move up, something they don't appear ready to do. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- BILL (OHIO): Hey JG, What will the Pack do? TE, CB? Aaron Rodgers going to be good? Jeremy Green: I think the Packers would be in a position to take the best player available. I think CB is probably a good bet, a safe bet. Flowers is a possibility, Cason is a possibility. I think the value in that pick will be CB. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- RC (Cincy): With the new format of the draft, do you think that it is going to effect the number of trades made between teams? Jeremy Green: No. You know that going in. You have to tighten your plan up a little bit, in terms of getting a deal done. You have to get on the horn a little earlier. As soon as the pick is made, you have to get on the phone. Deals can still get done, if you want to make deals. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Kyle (OH): If the Rams add Dorsey, and their O-Line stays healthy this season, do you see them competing for the NFC West? Jeremy Green: Of the teams that are picking in the top 5, they clearly have the most talent. They'll be in the mix in the NFC West, because there's no elite team there. The Rams, when healthy, are an explosive offensive team. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Brett (Montana): Who do you see the vikings going after with their 2nd round pick? Jeremy Green: As you look at them in the second round now, because they're out of the second round, you have to think about an impact defensive guy in the secondary. They need to get themselves a CB to go with Jared Allen. If Tavaris Jackson becomes a good QB, they're as good as anyone in the NFC. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Raz : Are the Iggles going to make a deal for one of the big 3 WRs: Roy, Ocho, or Anquan? Jeremy Green: They'd like to, but I don't think those teams will move those players. All of those teams have been talked to. If Cincinnati is not going to take that deal from the Redskins, I don't know what deal they would take. That would be two No. 1s for a guy who is 30. I think Roy Williams has the best chance to be moved. Jeremy Green: It's going to be a good draft. There's not a lot of elite players, but I think there will be a lot of intrigue and a lot of suspense. There will be a lot of pressure on teams to sit tight and be patient. |

My views line up with theirs regarding Dorsey and Ellis. Sounded very sensible to me. Good posts Pak.
