Trade Bait

Midway thrugh the preseason Saints coaches and fans are starting to realize (actually we have been knowing) the teams weaknesses. Number one on the list is backup running back. Much talk has been made of targeting certain teams #2 running backs. Some of the names I've seen mentioned are......Ladell Betts, Lamar Smith, (Been there done that), and sammy morris of Buffalo.....
The question is Which saints player can we most afford to get rid of. The following are players who I've heard may be trade bait....(Martin Chase, Kenny Smith, and (I hear Grady Jackson is also in the mix,,,,but I hope not) If it is betts that the saints target I'm sure one of these Dt's will be gone. The question is, Are any of these backup running backs worth getting rid of for one of our valuable DT's. I realize that none of these DT's listed beside Jackson are household names but they do provide quality depth...........Just wondering.

on the subject of trade bait:

wouldn't you think one of our backup TE's would be worth getting rid of for a backup running back or future pick. Sloan,Boo, or even Zach HIlton(afterall the colts gave us a 7th round draft pick last year for unproven Ricky Williams

I vote Sloan.

I think we keep some youth at TE. I\'d like to see Conwell, Williams and Hilton.
Our TE position could be awesome for years to come.

I can\'t see keeping 2 old guys.
Hilton will be snatched up within seconds of his release. He must be kept.

Although our coaches and some people in the front office have become a bunch of liars I believe that Grady isn\'t going anywhere. I can see a trade involving Kenny Smith as he is fed up with the lies about starting and may become a distraction. Chase may also be gone. You can get more for guys like Smith and Chase than for Sloane. He didn\'t have a very good season last year and although I tipped him to rebound this year his market value should still be pretty low - too low to get a quality backup RB.
Plus the problems with the cap and two contracts ... It\'s gonna be difficult to get someone adequate this late. If Kijana Carter works out that would be great.

P.S.: What prison would we have to bail Lawrence Phillips out of if we become desperate?

Too bad Cecil Collins is still in Jail. That kid could flat out run.

Washington would be interested in both DT and TE. With the loss of Brandon Noble they are dead at both positions. Ladell Betts would be an interesting acquisition, but in the same way that Curtis Keaton was an interesting acquisition.

Do we want a change of pace third down back, or an every down back-up? I personally would hope for a bigger back that can drive between the tackles. Sammy Morris would be decent, but not my first choice. I still see the Giants having no place for Ron Dayne. The Colts are also stocked with RB depth and a guy like Domenic Rhodes or James Mungro may be available. Sammy Morris could probably be had for the least compensation.

While I do believe all 20 of these players will be playing for the Saints, somewhere else, or on a practice squad this year, all are expendable. If we can trade any, or all, or a combination of any or all, it would be better than having to lose some of them due to cutdown. While I don\'t feel every player above is a potential cut, all may have value to some other team in need and if we can\'t get a player in return I like the idea of stockpiling future draft picks, even late rounders that can always be packaged with other picks or players to move up in the draft. Let the dealing begin.
