this is a discussion within the Saints Community Forum; I got to hand it to Kiper though a lot of what he said from the begining of the off season (minus the middle BS) till the day before and draft day panned out. He even made a ballsy call ...

He even made a ballsy call that he would leave the set and take his hair gell with him if Matt Ryan was there at the Ravens pick to Shay. Shay claiming he would or could be there and Kiper was giving Shay crap from some of his none sense. Not a Kiper fan but don't hate the guy either. At least from what I can tell this year he was on his game. |

If you have a problem with Mel Kiper Jr then you have a problem with yourself. Mel Kiper Jr is the draft, period. Who cares if he's a robot, all robots should be so helpful. I've said it before and I'll say it again, the two best experts ESPN has are Kiper and Peter Gammons. They have their niche and they are the best at what they do.
Having said that, my God Mel looked like Satan this year! Did anybody see him glaring like a lunatic when he had the showdowns with Todd McShay? |

It was like McShay (new kid) trying to knock on ol' Mel and Mel not going to let him do it. "IF MATT RYAN IS THERE AT 9, I WILL WALK OFF THE SET AND TAKE MY HAIR GELL WITH ME". Pretty strong words. But that goes to show you Mel knew what the hell he was talking about and McShay isn't in the same league. I also like the expression of everyone else on set... like what the hell are we going to do if it happens there is a lot of time Mel has for the next two days who is going to take up the slack. |

Respect for Melvin.
We all know who he is and discuss him ad-nauseum. His predictions and analysis of players is as hit-or-miss as our own. We all discuss the same things that he does. The difference is that he gets paid very, very well for his thoughts. Without the chance to "Hate on" Melvin this time of year wouldn't be the same to me. Kind of like Dick Vitale. I say: "God bless Eddie Munster Kiper!" |

He needs to give some credit to his research team. He does not do it alone. But he is good at what he does. but there are others just as good or even better |

Hagan you're right about Mel as far as his prediction % goes but that's not what he's about. Nobody can do what Mel does as far as his character at the draft. He's the guy people love to hate but they listen when he talks. He is just a character who found a niche. You look at a guy who's got great hair and know's how to use it. At the end of the day he's a guy who could probably talk about the draft until he died or Jesus came back. When you look at a guy like Mel Kiper Jr you have to like what you see because at the end of the day he's got the goods.

Screw Mel. I used to love listening to him but I had to turn off ESPN this year. He and that fat boy, Chris Berman, made me sick to my stomach. The draft coverage was horrible at best. As far as Mel goes, he is a has been. He did not say anything that I can remember that was insightful about the players being drafted.
