Saints coach Sean Payton didn't call Carl Nicks personally to tell him he was going to draft him. Instead, he spent 20 minutes on the phone just getting to know the offensive tackle.

"He told me, 'you had a first-round grade, but your off-the-field behavior has dropped you,'" Nicks said. "I told him I'm going to prove a lot of people wrong.''

Apparently that was enough for Payton as New Orleans spent their fifth pick on Nicks on Sunday, ending two days of frustration for the one-time North Salinas High and Hartnell College star.
