Saints Trade DT Martin Chase to Skins!!!

I got this from ESPN.com:

Rebuffed in their attempts to deal for defensive tackle Ted Washington, the Washington Redskins recovered on Wednesday by trading for Martin Chase, a six-year veteran who has spent most of his career with the New Orleans Saints.

New Orleans will receive a seventh-round choice in the 2004 draft. The selection can escalate to a sixth-rounder if Chase participates in more than 40 percent of the defensive snaps this season.

They really wanted Kenny Smith though...

For right now i\'m glad they kept Smith, I still think he has more upside. I just hope he continues to show it.

Pretty much a wasted trade as far as I\'m concerned.

I think this trade pretty much sucks.... I was hoping we would trade Chase and another late round pick to the skins for one of their backup rb\'s...betts or watson.....basically we just let Chase go.....All we\'ll get out of the trade is a 7th round pick next year that probably wont even make the team........I though Chase provided quality depth
What happens if Ford contiues to have injury problems.....our depth sucks now

I\'m glad we got something, Kenny Smith is playing better as is Jackson no way should we have gotten rid of either of them, Sullivan is obviously an untouchable for now ,that left Ford and Chase. Of the two Ford has more up side and flexibility he is a solid reserve with plenty starting experience, he was the Titans starting tackle last year and he can play end., There is no reason to think Fords injury will be a problem,Chase really was the odd man out .Credit the Saints for getting something for him rather than just waiting a couple weeks and sending him to the street. Sure a seventh round pick is\'nt much but it\'s better than nothing and we were not going to carry 5 tackles on the final 53. Turbo our depth does\'nt suck we are one of the few teams in the league with depth at the tackle spot right now. Of the 4 tackles we have on the roster 3 have starting experience and the one that does\'nt is our first round pick.

Okay deal. If both had been on the team when it was time for the cut I would have preferred to keep Chase, but Ford isn\'t a lot worse. Better to get a seventh round pick than just release a player.
Who knows what they\'ll do with the pick? Maybe it will be included in a deal to move up in the second round. Another solid move by the front office.

I wonder about the saints personnel dept. How can they be so good and patient at times then act haphazard like this.

This trade makes no sense to me... not at this present time. All the cards were in the saints hands and they folded way to early. What happens now if the saints have an injury in the next 2 preseason games? What was the rush to trade for a 6-7 round pick? that is a minimum deal they could have received from any team after the last preseason game.

FW if we had waited till the last preseason game no deal whould of happened. Teams know the final cut is comming right after the last preseason game, why give up anything for someone who is going to be cut in a couple days. It shows how hard up for tackles the Skins are that we got anything at all out of them. The point you raise about an injury is valid ,that\'s a risk in football. The deal is not a great manuver that will have a significant impact on next years squad, but give the front office some credit, they got something for a player that was probably going to be cut.

In April 2001, Chase signed a 1 year deal worth $512K, then he restructured to save cap space 5 months later. He signed a 2 year extention in 2001 in December, so he should be signed through December of this year at least. Really, he would be a free agent after the season but his tender would be minimal. I don\'t know what the terms of the extension were, but not much of a raise if anything.
Since we around $5M under the cap now and so are the Skins, I don\'t see any financial benefit to this deal.

My problem with the trade is that the Skins are a$$ up in the demand side and we have the supply. They wanted Washington and the Pats got him. They won\'t likely get Dalton and they underpaid to get Chase. We have a commodity they needed. We were definitely in the drivers seat of this deal. Even that he was a free agent after the season, I would have thought that their desperation would be enough to raise the value. Maybe even a conditional position swap at our option in an mid round would have added some potential to this.

I don\'t think we would have had a hard time making the trade after the last preseason game. If a player is cut they go on the FA market to sign where they want. It would have still been in Washingtons interest to make the trade and guarantee they get chase and at his current pay.

The saints traded for keaton last year before final cuts and they gave a player and a 4th rounder for that sorry player. Saints get too desperate this time of year.
